My invention relates to improvements in stanchions, and more particularly to a stanchion having a resilient connecting piece at the bottom end and means for preventing the separation of the top ends of the stanchion when in their spread position.
One of the objects of my invention is to prevent the strain of the animal, when the stanchion is latched, pulling one of the side bars and the latch downwardly to release said latch and accidentally spread the bars.
The invention has among its other objects the production of a device of the kind described which is simple, convenient, compact, durable, reliable,,eflicient and satisfactory for use wherever found applicable.
Many other objects and advantages of the construction herein shown and described will be obvious to those skilled in the art from the disclosures herein given.
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement andcombination of parts herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, wherein I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention, 1 indicates the horizontal bar or support for the stanchion, said bar usually held in place by the vertical bars of uprights 2 secured to the foundation or floor 3. The stanchion itself comprises a pair of spaced, preferably parallel side bars or arms 4 and 4' of any suitable material, referably rigid. in the embodiment shown'in Figs. The upper end of one of the bars, as for instance the bar 4, is bent or extended transversely toward the other bar, as at 6, and projecting upwardly thereof at its free end, as at 7 A, slot 8, 8, is provided longitudinally of the transversely and upwardly extending portion of the bar, said slot enlarged' laterally, as at '9,.intermediate its ends, close to the upturned portion 8 of the slot.
The stanchion is hung. at its head or upper end from the horizontal bar 1 by any suitable means and preferably by a device which will permit of a universal movement.
In the present instance I have arranged a collar 10 about the bar 1, to which is swiveled a pin or connecting link 11, carrying a member 12 pivotally at its lower end to detachably clamp about the portion 6 of the stanchion.v It will be seen that the stanchion will thus have a movement in a pair of mutually transverse planes, due to the particular form of suspension member shown.
A'pin 13 is carried by the portion 12 of the connecting member and is inserted through the channel sides of the part 6 to lie therein. The lower end of the stanchion i limited in its upward and lateral move- .ment by anchor means 14, loosely encircling the portion 5 of the stanchion, so that the stanchion may slide freely therein.
In order to detachably latch the bars in their locked position, I have provided a latch member of bent arm levers 1516, pivoted intermediate its ends, as at 17, to the upper or free end of the bar 4. i A series of teeth 18 are provided on the arm 15 of the latch member, to adjustably engage with the pin 13 to hold the parts in their locked posi tion. j Thelatch memberie of such athicl a rates so as ta be elidably insertable threugh the slot provided in the transversely-extending portion of the bar 4, and in order to prevent the accidental unlatching of the stanchion when the animal strains or pulls downwardly on the side bar or latch, there is provided a transversely-extending pin lug 19.011 the latch adjacent the pivotal point, as shown more particularly in Fig. 2, the same adapted to bear on the top side of the slot and prevent the accidental releasing of the latch and separation of the bars. It will be noted that the lug 19 is removably insertable through the slot only at the enlarged portion 9 thereof, so that when the bars are to be spread or unlatched, the teeth 18 are released from engagement with the pin 13, whereupon the bars will spring toward the position shown in Fig. l, the lug 19 moving out through the enlarged opening 9. It is preferable to form the spring part 5 so that the normal position of the parallel bars is intermediate the fully closed and the fully open positions, whereby latching is necessary to hold the stanchion in either its fully open or closed positions.
In order to prevent the latch from dropping entirely through the slot, a projection or lug 20 is arranged at the free end of the latch, said projection preferably being arcuate, and another projection 21 is arranged at an angle to the projection 20 and spaced therefrom so that when the bars are pulled apart to their full separation, the
projections 20 and 21 will be on the top side of the slot at the opposite ends of the enlarged opening 9 and thus prevent the latch dropping entirely therethrough. The lower end of the projection 21 is extended forwardly a bit as at 21, and the lower end of the projection 20 is spaced slightly above the level of the end 21, preferably about so that when the latch is pulled to the open position shown in Fig. t, it will drop (about and the forward end 21 of the projection will engage the under side of the slot enlargement 9, and the lower end of the lug 2O slidably engaging the upper surface of said slot. The resiliency of the bars tends to force them together when spread apart their maximum amount, and hence the tip of the projection 21 will be pulled along the under surface of the slot to latch the bars in their spread position, as shown, and prevent their accidental closing. The bars or guards 22 may be provided at the opposite sides of the stanchion, if so desired.
Various cross-sectional shapes may be used for the stanchion, a few of these shapes being illustrated in Figs. 710.
Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial modifications maybe made in the same without de- Jarting from the spirit of my invention; hence I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, construc tion, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, or uses 1nentioned. 7
hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A stanchion comprising a pair of spaced bars connected at their lower ends, the upper end of one of said bars extended transversely past and thence upwardly of the other bar and provided with an elongated slot therethrough enlarged at one point, a latch member pivoted on the other bar and slidably insertable through said slot, and projections on the other. end of said latch to prevent its full withdrawal through said enlarged portion of the slot.
2. A stanchion comprising a pair of spaced bars connected at their lower ends, the upper end of one of said bars extended transversely and thence upwardly of the other bar and provided with an elongated slot therethrough enlarged at a point intermediate its ends, a latch member pivoted at the end of the other bar and slidably insertable through said slot, and projections of a width wider than the elongated portion of said slot carried atcthe end of said latch member and so arranged as to. engage said slot at opposite ends of the enlarged portion when the bars are separated, to prevent the full withdrawal of the latch member through said slot.
3. A stanchion comprising a pair of bars of channel section connected at their lower ends, the upper end of one pair extended transversely and having an elongated slot therethrough to adjacent the free end thereof, said slot enlarged intermediate its ends, a pin between the channel sides of said transversely bent portion, a latch pivoted to the free end of the other bar and s'lidable through said slot to lie between said channel sides of the first bar and having teeth selectively engalgeable with said pin, said latch having a lateral projection thereon adapted to normally overlie said slot and removably insertable therethrough only through said enlarged portion, said latch also having a pair of spaced enlargements thereon adacent its free end to bear against the top side of the slot at opposite ends of its enlarged portion to prevent the full withdrawal of the latch therethrough.
4:. A stanchion comprising a pair of spaced bars resiliently and integrally connected at their lower ends, one of said bars integrally extended transversely toward the other and having a longitudinally-extend ing slot therethrough with an enlargement intermediate. its ends, means engageable with said last-mentioned bar to suspend the stanchion and permit it to swing with a universal movement, a pin on said bar, a latch member pivoted at the free end of the other bar and 'slidable in said slot to permit the bars to spread at their upper ends, said latch member having teeth selectively engageable with said pin, a lug of a width larger than said slot and removably insertable through said enlarged opening, and lugs at the free end of said latch member adapted to abut the free end of said transverse extension df the first-mentioned bar at the limit of spreading movement of the bars to prevent the full withdrawal of the latch through the slot, and latch the stanchion in its open position. a
5. A stanchion comprising a pair of spaced side bars having an integral resilient connection at their lower ends and being separable at their upper ends, the top of one of said bars extending transversely over the top of the other bar and to a point substantially beyond said other bar when the two side bars are connected together, and means carried by the shorter bar passing through connection at their lower ends and being separable at their upper ends, the top of one of said bars extending transversely over the top of the other bar and to a point substantially beyond said other bar when the two side bars are connected together, and f means carried by the shorter bar passing through a slot 111 said horizontal extenslon and cooperating therewith for retaining said bars together, said horizontal extension cooperating with said retaining means for limiting thespreading movement of said bars.
