FANNIE L. MYERS, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
DlEVlGE FOR FILLING AND SHAPING CUSHlONS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Isetters Patent No. 656,995, dated August 28, 1900.
- Application filed m '22, 1900. Serial No. 17,572. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FANNIE L. MYERS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Device for Filling and Shaping Cushions, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
One purpose of my invention is to provide a simple and effective device whereby cushions, especially toilet or pin cushions, may be held in a mold or shaping-block and the filling quickly and conveniently packed therein to such-an extent that the filling cannot shift and a firm exterior surface will be ob taincd of the desired shape.
Another purpose of the invention is to so construct the device that the filling may be supplied as needed by the operator.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures:
Figure 1 is a perspective-view of the improved device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a plunger and lever connected therewith and an inner face view of a member of the shaping-block or mold employed, the hinges and latch being in section, and likewise the support for the block. Fig. 3 is ahorizontal section taken practically on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, but through a complete block or mold; and Fig. 4 is a side view of a tool used in connection with the device shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
A represents a shaping-block or mold which comprises two members or sections 10 and 11, connected byhinges 12 and provided with any suitable form of latch B. The latch or lookin g device illustrated in the drawings consists of ahasp 13, hinged to one member or section and passed over a staple 14, secured upon the opposite member or section, and the hasp is held in position by a wedge or pin 15, passed through the staple to an engagement with the outer face of the hasp. The major portions of the inner faces of the two sections 10 and 11 of the shaping-block are adapted to fit closely together, and such surfaces are smooth; but in theinner face of each of the sections 10 and 11 of the shaping-block, preferably at the central portion thereof, a recess 16 is produced of desired'shape, and when the sections are brought together the recesses or depressions 16 in the two sections register, as they occupy the same positions in the sections. An opening 17 is made in the upper end'portion of each section 10 and 11 of the shaping-block A. These openings likewise register when the sections of the block are brought together, and the openings 17 are tapering, being widest at the top, each wall of each of the openings being given a downward and inward inclination. The openings 17 connect with the recesses or depressions 16 in the body portions of the block-sections.
The bag or ticking 18 or other receptacle to. be filled is first charged with a suitable filling 19 to a'greater or less extent, and this filling may be sand, bran, sawdust, or other customary material. The opening 17 is much smaller than the mold-opening 16, so that an end wall 20 is formed around said opening 17. The upper end of the casing 18 is left open to a certain extent, so that the filling poured into the openings 17 will enter the casing 18 at its open end. The said open end of the casing is adapted to receive a plunger 21, which plunger, at its upper portion, is pivoted to a lever 22, having' a handle 23, so that it may be operated by hand, and the opposite end of the lever 22is fulcrumed upon a standard 24 or other support, which standard isusually attached to a table or bench 25 or the equivalent thereof, and upon which the shaping-block or mold A rests. I
It will be observed hat by means of the device above described after a partially-filled casing has been placed in the shaping-block and the sections of the block locked together through the medium of the plunger-21 the filling may be packed so close that it cannot possibly shift, while at the same time the casing is compelled to keep the shape it is designed to take.
In order to' reach the upper corners of the casing in an effective manner and cause the filling to be as firmly packed at said corners as at the central portion of the casing, I preferably use a tool 0 (shown in'Fig. 4) in connection with the plunger and means for operating it. This tool consists of a handle 26 and a rod 27, suitably secured to the handle, the free end 28 of which rod is curved. By
introducing the curved end of the rod 0 into the casing the corners may be quickly and effectively packed, especially at that end of the casing which is to be closed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a device for filling and shaping cushions, a shaping-block consisting of two sections, each section of the block having a recess in its inner face adapted to receive a cushion, an opening in an end wall leading into said recess, the said opening being tapered and of less diameter or area than the opening formed by the combined recesses, thus providing an end wall around the inner end of said opening, means for securing the sections together, a plunger arranged to enter the opening, and a lever connected to the plunger, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FANNIE ;L. MYERS.
