These rods are provided with sections of spiral or other springsN N, placed between thedies so as to force apart the horizontal sections ofthe molds in order to fill the same, or to remove the cigar when perfectly formed to receive the wrapper.

I am aware that a patent for pressing the bodies of cigars by the application of cases and alternate slots constructed in three distinct parts, and operating horizontally by means of a flexible strap uniting the lower sections of the mold or cases, while the top of all the cases is formed in one piece for the purpose of pressin g the body only of the whole number of cigars into shape by means of detached clampingirons; but by my improved machine I am enabled to form the conical end or tip at the same time that I produce the perfect contour of the body of a cigar, by means of a series of independent molds or dies, so constructed that either one of the cigars maybe removed from the mold without moving the upper or top of the mold from the other cases; and by the arrangement and use of four or more sectional dies to form each cigar I am enabled to produce a more uniform, compact, and finished surface, without ridges, in a workmanlike m anner, ready for wrappin g, the whole number of dies being operated by the combination of the guide-rods It It, spiral'orot-her' springs N N, hooks or spring-catches O 0, hinges h h, and
