- A is either the floor, or a block, on which the machine rests; which carries a vertical rod or standard b, carrying, on its upper end, a circular block o, mortised to take the ends of siX, eight, or more, connecting links d, jointed by bolts 1, 1, seeFig. 3, to the block c, the outer ends of the links cl, are jointed at 2, to the upper ends of the vertical staves c, these are jointed at the lower end, by the nuts and screws 3, to the table, or platform f, which is nearly the size of the internal diameter, of a small sized hat, and is fitted to allow of motion up and down, the standard b.
- the platform f is connected to the top of the vertical pipe, or cylinder g, which surrounds the standard b, by a socket piece z', and screws; the cylinder g, reaches to within a short distance of the block A, and has, near its lower end, a stirrup and lever 71 with a fulcrum 4f, and joint 5, to the cylinder g.
- the felt is stretched out, into nearly the desired form, for the upper part, or crown of the hat, the felt body Ais then ready, and removed, for the usual process of blocking, and the spiral spring 6, presses the platform f, up, and closes the staves e, ready for another felt body.
- the Fig. 4L shows a mode of carrying the lever t, through a 'slot in the cylinder g, and standard b, instead'of encircling the cylinder g, as beforedescribed.
- the platform f may be made stationary
- the lower part of the staves may be jointed, by links, the same as the upper part, so that the staves will be thrown out, parallel, although I prefer, and use, the modes previously described.

Description
UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEIoE.
WILLIAM SELPHO, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MACHINERY Fort PULLING oUT HAT-TIPS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 5,082, dated April 24, 1847,
To all whom t may concern j Be it known that I, WILLIAM SELPHo, of the city, county, and State of New York, machinest, a native of Great Britain, having resided more than one year next preceding the date khereof in the United States and having duly made oath of my intention to become a citizen thereof, have invented and made and applied to use certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Means of Stretching and Pulling out I-Iat Tips and Crowns, for which improvements I seek Letters Patent of the United States, and that the said improvements and the means of constructing and using the same are fully and substantially set forth and shown lin the following description and in the drawing annexed to and making a part of this specification, whereinvFigure 1, is a general plan, Fig. 2, is a vertical elevation, and Fig. 3, is a vertical sectional elevation, through the center of Fig. 1, and the same letters and numbers as marks of reference apply vto the like parts in all the several figures.
A, is either the floor, or a block, on which the machine rests; which carries a vertical rod or standard b, carrying, on its upper end, a circular block o, mortised to take the ends of siX, eight, or more, connecting links d, jointed by bolts 1, 1, seeFig.
The platform f, is connected to the top of the vertical pipe, or cylinder g, which surrounds the standard b, by a socket piece z', and screws; the cylinder g, reaches to within a short distance of the block A, and has, near its lower end, a stirrup and lever 71 with a fulcrum 4f, and joint 5, to the cylinder g.
A collar 7, around the standard o, and wthnthe cylinder g, sustains the lower end of a helical expansive spring 6, which acts against the vsocket piece i, of the platform f,
cylinder g, platform b, and staves e, down,
and the connecting links CZ, acting at the same time to open the staves'e, the felt is stretched out, into nearly the desired form, for the upper part, or crown of the hat, the felt body Ais then ready, and removed, for the usual process of blocking, and the spiral spring 6, presses the platform f, up, and closes the staves e, ready for another felt body.
' The Fig. 4L, shows a mode of carrying the lever t, through a 'slot in the cylinder g, and standard b, instead'of encircling the cylinder g, as beforedescribed.
The platform f, may be made stationary,
and the standard o, be made to rise up,
without the spring, and without substantially varying the arrangement hereinbefore described; or the lower part of the staves may be jointed, by links, the same as the upper part, so that the staves will be thrown out, parallel, although I prefer, and use, the modes previously described.
What I claim as new, and of my own inf vention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isn n The making a machine to formhat crowns,
by the constructive combination of the platform f, staves c, and links d, with the cylinder g, spring 6, lever it, 'and standard b,
when applied to such uses, substantially as described and shown.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto sety my hand, in the city of New York, this lifteenth day of January one thousand eight hundred and forty-seven.
WILLIAM SELPHO. Witnesses:
W. SERRELL, f SAMUEL W. SERREIL.
