MATHIAS WARNER, OF JONESBURG, MISSOURI.
END-GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent N O. 656,915, dated August 2B, 1900. Application led Tune 23, 1900. JScrial No. 21,290. (No model.)
To nsZZ whom, t may concern.-
Be it known that I, MATHIAS WARNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jonesburg, in the county of Montgomeryand State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End-Gates; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in end-gates or closures for wagons, bins, and the like; and its object is to provide an endgate fastening which avoids the use of rods and similar fastenings and which is simple in construction and adapted to permit of the easy and quick application and removal of the endgate.
With these and other minor objects in View the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be lhereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying` drawings, Figure l is au end view showing the application of my invention to a vehicle-body. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section through the vehicle-body and a longitudinal section through the endgate. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through the parts shown in Fig. 2. Fig. i is a detail View of the bail.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, in which like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral l represents the body of a wagon, bin, or other like container, which may be of the usual or any preferred construction, and 2 is the end-gate, arranged to close the open end of the body in the usual manner. The side-boards 3 of the body are provided at their rear ends with wear-plates 4, which are of U form and embrace the sides and lower ends of the boards, but may consist simply of plates applied to the inner sides or faces of-said boards 3. To the wear-plate portions or sections upon the inner sides of the boards are applied vertical distance strips 5, to which are centrally secured retaining-strips `6, which have their opposite side edges 7 free and spaced apart from the wear-plates to provide opposite longitudinal grooves 8 for the reception of the locking devices on the end-gate. The free edges of the keeper strips or plates are thus `adapted to have a certain flexibility and freedom of movement and to exert a spring binding action on the locking devices of the end-gate, as hereinafter described.
The end-gate 2 is provided at each of its ends with a pair of locking-plates 9, secured upon opposite Sides thereof and projecting beyond the ends of the gate, the free projecting ends being bent laterally toward each other to form hooks or tongues 10, which are adapted to slidably engage the free edges of the keeper strips or plates and to fit and slide within the grooves 8 thereof. These hooks or tongues are adapted, when the end-gate is applied togbear against the central distancepieces to which the keeper-strips are connected, to guide the end-gate in its movements and to also frictionally engage between the wear-plates and the projecting side edges of the keeper-strips to hold the end-gate firmly in position and prevent it from working either up or down when the Wagon-body oscillates or plays freely on its sustainingsprings as a result of the jarring or jolting action of the running-gear.
In applying the end-gate it is held vertically above the body, and its locking-tongues are brought into coincidence with the grooves formed by the keeper-strips and are then forced down in said grooves to close the open end of the body. To remove the end-gate, the reverse operation is carried out-that is, the endgate is drawn upwardly until the tongues are entirely Withdrawn from the grooves, when the gate may be removed. A pivoted loop or bail 1l is applied to the endgate and serves the combined purpose of a handle to facilitate the removal of the gate and a lock to hold the gate closed. The bail is pivoted at its ends in eyes 12, and one, of the ends is extended and bent at right angles to form a hook or catch 18, adapted, when the bail hangs down, to engage a pin 14 on the body to hold the gate locked. When the bail is swung up, the catch is withdrawn from engagement with the pin and the gate left free to be lifted out. The frictional engagement between the tongues of the end-gate and the free side edges of the keeper-strips adapts ICO the gate to be elevated or opened to any desired extent and to be supported securely in its adjusted position.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and mode of operation of the invention Will be readily understood.
By providing an end-gate fastening of this type the mounting of the gate is materially simplified, rods and other complicated attachment-s dispensed with, and the gate adapted to be entirely removed and applied With ease and facility.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In an end-gate for vehicles, bins and the like, the combination, With the side-boards thereof, of vWear-plates upon the inner faces of said side-boards and carrying distance-pieces, retaining plates secured centrally to said distance-pieces and having free side edges spaced apart from the Wear-plates and forming in connection therewith longitudinal grooves, an end-gate, and locking-plates arranged in bearings at each end of the gate and provided with inwardly-projecting tongues to slide within said grooves, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
