SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 656,468, dated August 21, 1900.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that We, MICHAEL MULLIN, ISAAC N. WATSON, and JOHN A; HALL, citizens of the United States, and residents of Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Scraper, of which the followingis a full, clear,

and exact description.

The purpose of this invention is to provide a hand-operated scraper which may be used in the various connections occurring in carpentry and painting work without changing its adjustment or involving such complications of parts as render the arrangement impracticable. This specification is the'disclosure of one form of the invention, while the claims define the actual scope thereof. Reference is to be had to the accompanying 2o drawings, forming a part of this specification,

in which similar characters of reference indi cate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken 2 5 near one side, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.

The stock or body of the tool is cast intogral of brass, aluminium, iron, or other suitable metal. This stock comprises sides at and 0 ends a, the outer surfaces of which are curved downward and the inner surfaces of which are formed plane and disposed diagonally to the longitudinal line of the stock. The stock also comprises an intermediate plate a extending between the sides of the stock and disposed vertically, the ends of the crossplate running into downward extensions a, formed on the respective sides a of the stock;

In the inner faces of the downward exten- 4o sions a and in the sides or adjacent to such extensions vertical grooves a are formed, such grooves constituting guideways in which are held a scraping-blade b and a key 0, the latter of hard wood. The blade I) is held flat against the intermediate or cross plate a and by the key 0 the blade is wedged firmly in any desired position. The key 0 is formed with a projection or knob c, by which it may be driven out of position. By striking the top of the key it may be driven downward into position.

One of the ends 0!. of the stock carries the end blade (Z, which lies against the plane in nor face of the said end and is held firmly yet adjustably in place by a cleat e, which is clamped against the under face of the blade by screws f, one of which is shown in Fig. 2, such screws passing through the cleat e and entering the stock.

In using the device the tool may be held with the stock in horizontal position and with the blade I) engaged with the work. If desired, the tool may be tilted, so that the end at opposite the knife 01 may be engaged with the work to form a gage to the action of the blade 17; The blade cl will-be found especially advantageous in working in corners and other diflicult places. When the blade d is used, the other end of the tool, as well as the blade I), is raised out of contact with the work. By properly bevelin g the blades 1) and (1 various kinds of work may be executed. Notably, by a proper bevel of the blade I) the scraper may be used as a plane by engaging the end at opposite the blade 01 with the work and pushing the tool forward with the blades in front.

.Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1 A scraper, comprising a stock or body, a blade held thereon intermediate its ends, and

a second blade carried at one end of the stock or body, the other end of the stock or body serving as a gage to the action of the firstnamed or middle blade.
