To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SHERBURN M. MER- BILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brookline, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in an improved fastener for cushion-buttons and like articles :0 and in the button into which the improved fastener enters as a component .and charac tcristic part.
An embodiment of this invention is shown in the drawings hereto annexed, in which Figure 1 represents a blank from which the button-fastener is formed and indicates the mode of cutting the blank for the formation of the fastener or staple. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of a fastener or staple when finished. Fig. 3 is a side view of the head of the staple shown in Fig. 2, showingin dotted lines the position of the clenched spurs after the operation of forming the button. Fig. 4. shows in cross-section the head of a cushionbutton or like article with the head portion of my improvedstaple attached thereto.
The fastener or staple is composed of sheet metal possessed of the proper ductility and stiffness usually required in manufacture of staples and fasteners.
The blank, Fig. 1, is cut with the end or leg portions a and the middle portion or table I) located between the dotted lines 1 1 and 2 2, which are at or near the lines where the legs 3 5 are bent downward from the table. V-shaped tongues c are cut in the upper portion of the legs a, the base of thetongues c lying on or near the dotted linesl 1 and 2 2. The tools with which the V-shaped tongues c are cut 49 from the legs a, are so shaped as to give the V-shaped cuts a bevel, s0,, that,; when the tongues c are bent up from the table b to form clenching-spurs they may be provided with the required beveled edges "to insure deflec- 5 tion when the clenching-spurs are pressed into the material of a button-head. Fig. 2 shows the shape of the staple when bent from the blank shown in Fig. 1. The legs a a depend from the table I) and are substantially of Fig. 2 in said view and illustrates the .bevel of thepoints and edges of the clenching-spurs c. l
j The clenching-spurs c, as shown in the drawings, are provided with bevels which serve to deflect the spurs away from each other and outward from the table I) whenever the spurs c are forced into a solid although penetrable material, such as a solid buttonhead. If deflection in the opposite direction is desired, the legs a and spurs 0 should be bent from the blank in directions reverse to those indicated in the drawings, so as to bring the spur-bevels on the outside.
To form the button, I take a suitably-shaped button-head of solid penetrable material, like compressed paper or wood fiber, and force the spurs c of the staple into the lower side of the button-head. In Fig.4 there is shown in cross-section thev button-head d with the spurs c of the staple forced into the material of the button-head. In order to improve the finish of the button, sufficient pressure should be applied in setting the staple in the but ton-head to sink the table portion 1) of the staple flush with the lower surface of the button-head. The button thus constructed will be found to possess far more than thenecessary strength required and is especially serviceable for a button for attachment to carriage-cushions and like articles.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-- 1. A fastener for cushion-buttons and like articles consisting of a one-piece stapleprovided with a table portion, legs depending therefrom and clenchingspurs ascending therefrom.
2. A fastener for cushion-buttons and like articles consisting of a one-piece staple provided with a table portion, legs depending therefrom and clenching spurs ascending therefrom,said clenching-spu rs being beveled on one side.
- 3. A fastener for cushion-buttons and like articles consisting of a one-piece staple havinga table portion, legs depending therefrom, and clenching-spurs cut V-shaped from the legs adjacent to the table portion and bent upward from the table portion.
4. A button consisting of a solid head of penetrable material, and a one-piece staple, the said staple provided with a table portion, legs depending therefrom and clenchingspurs ascending therefrom, the said clenching-spurs embedded in the material of the button-head.
5. A button consisting of a solid head of penetrable material and a one-piece staple, thesaid staple provided with a table portion, legs depending therefrom and bevel-pointed clenching-spurs ascending therefrom, the said clenching-spurs being embedded and self-deflected in the button-head.
6. A button consisting of a solid head of penetrable material and a one-piece staple, the said staple provided with a table portion, legs depending therefrom, and clenchingspurs cut V-shaped from the legs adjacent to the table portion and bent upward from the table portion, the said clenching-spurs embedded in the material of the button-head.

A button consisting of a solid head of penetrable material, and a one-piece staple, the said staple provided with a table portion, legs depending therefrom and clenchingspurs ascending therefrom, the said clenching-spurs embedded in the material of the button-head and the said table portion sunk flush with the under surface of the buttonhead. 7 i.
8. A button consisting of a solid head of penetrable material and a one-piece staple, the said staple provided with a table portion, legs depending therefrom and bevel-pointed clenching-spurs ascending therefrom,the said clenching-spurs being embedded and self-deflected in the button-head, and the said table portion sunk flush with the under surface of the button-head.
