UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAVUS H. ANDERSON, OF DEERFIELD, NEW HAMPSHIRE, ASSIGNOR TO THE MORLEY BUTTON MANUFACTURING COMPANY OF SAOO, MAINE,
OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 672,052, dated April 16, 1901.
Application filed June 2, 1900.
To all whom) it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUs'rAVU's H. ANDER- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Deerfield, in the county of Rockingham and 5 State of New Hampshire, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention consists in an improved button adapted for use upon carriage-cushions [O and like articles, and is shown as embodied in several forms in drawings accompanying this specification, in which Figure 1 represents a blank of sheet metal out of which the staple portion of my improved [5 button is formed; Fig. 2, an ordinary solid head button; Fig. 3, the staple and button of Fig. 2 in juxtaposition and ready to be sesured to each other; Fig. 4, the complete button, consisting of .the button shown in Fig. 2
2o clenched to the staple as constructed of the blank shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 shows the mode of clenching or expansion of the button-eye illustrated in Fig. 2.
In carrying out this invention I form a sta- 2'5 ple out of a blank such as shown in Fig. l,
in the middle portion of which a perforation bis cut through the blank. This perforation is in the head part of the staple, which is defined when the staple-legs a a are bent at 30 right angles to the head portion t at or near the dotted lines. The perforation or slot b Serial No. 18,810. (No model.)
is of such size as just to admit of the passage of the eye d of the button shown in Fig. 2. This button may have a head of compressed paper or Wood-pulp and constitutes 5 the button-head of my'improved button. I
next pass the eye d, attached to the head 0, through the perforation b, as shown in Fig. 3, and then with a suitable tool or press compress and expand by such compression the 0 button-eye (1 until it assumes the shape and position shown in Fig. 4 and also in Fig. 5, when it serves as a clenching or riveting member and secures the button-head c to the staple-head t. By this means I make the ordi- 5 nary loop-eye on the solid button operate as a clenching wire or rivet for attachment of the button-head to the staple.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 50 A button consisting of a button-head, a wire button-eye depending therefrom, a pronged sheet-metal staple with a perforated headjoining the prongs, the button-eye being passed through the perforation in the staple-head 55 and clenched'on the under side thereof.
Signed by me at Portsmouth, New Hamp* shire, this 14th day of May, 1900.
GUSTAVUS H. ANDERSON. Witnesses:
WALTER O. BENNETT, FREDERICK OLDFIELD.
