SIDE-BOARD FASTENIER FOR WAGON-BEDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 656,239, dated August 21, 1900.
Application filed June 4, 1900.
To all whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, SIMON R. 'ZIMMERMAN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Amazonia, in the county of Andrew and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVagon-Bed Side- Board Lifters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates toimprovements in wagon-bed side-board lifters; and the objects of myimprovements are, first, to provide a durable device by which the upper and lower beds of a wagon may be held rigidly together, thus preventing small grain slipping out between the upper and lower beds while being hauled 5 second, to permit larger loads of corn and vegetables being hauled and ventilation afforded for live stock in transporting by elevating the upper bed, and, third, to dispense with a part of the numerous cleats and holders now used on said wagon-beds and at the same time greatly strengthen the wagon-body. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of an upperv and lower wagon-bed with the lifters attached; Fig. 2, aperspective view of the entire device; Fig. 3, a side view of the brace; Fig. 4, a longitudinal section of the device; Fig. 5, a face view of the plate and its lip, channel, bolt, and lug; and Fig. 6, a cross-section of the plate and lip.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings, A A represent the sideboards of an upper and lower wagon-bed, the upper bed being raised to a height permitting ventilating-space between its bottom and the top of the lowerbed.
B B represent the braces riveted to the outside of the upper bed, and O 0 plates riveted to the outside of the lower bed.
D is a channel cast as a part of the plate, which channel carries the brace. In the inside edge of the braces B B there are notches Serial No. 19,066. (No model.)
E E. At one end of eachof the plates there is a lip I-I,with a slot or division I at the middle. A lug J, cast with said plate, carries a bolt K,with handle L. Through each side of channel D there is a perforation or hole M, these holes being on a line horizontally opposite. A projection O on bolt K prevents its accidental withdrawal out of its lug J. It will be readily seen that having withdrawn the bolts backward from connection with the brace or lowered the side-boards of the upper bed to a position in which lug J, holes M M, and one of notches E E are in line the bolt may be readily inserted through said holes and the desired notch. The device is thus securely locked, holding the bed at the desired height, and the bolt being revolved sufiiciently to permit its handle to drop into a vertical position between the log and lip there is no possibility of the device being unlocked by jar in travel or other accidental cause.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-
1. In a wagon-bed side-board, litter the combination therewith of a plate riveted to the outside of the lower bed, a vertical channel in said plate, a brace adapted to be carried in said channel and having its upper end riveted to the outside of the upper bed in a position vertically above said channel, two perforations or holes horizontally opposite in the sides of the channel, a lip on an end of said plate and its slot, a bolt and its lug upon the face of said plate, the bolt pin and ham dle and the notches to receive said bolt, substantially as described.
2. In combination with the upper and lower beds of a wagon, a plate rigidly attached to the lower bed, a channel on the face thereof, a brace and the notches in its inner edge and having its upper end rigidly attached to the upper bed, and a bolt carried on the face of said plate and adapted to engage the notches of said brace, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SIMON It. ZIMMERM-AN.
Witnesses 2 FLOYD KENNEDY, AMos OAsTo.
