Description

B. F LEBER STAKE BODY Filed June 17, 1949 July 21, 1953 IN VENTR. y'amin E' Leber `Patented` July 21 19.53
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFiCE I. 2,646,310l a rs'rAKr: Boni?V yBenjamin F.'Leber', Chicago, Ill. Application June'lv, islaserial N o. 99,773
1V Claim.v (Cl. 296-28) 1 This invention relates to wagon and trailer and the like movable and stationary bodies, and is concerned more particularly with stake bodies.
Conventional stake bodies, both industrial and toy, are designed without much, if any, regard to appearance, and are made with stakes and socketswhich forma numberA of unsightly and Ainjurious projections. y
' Itis accordingly an object of my invention to provide ,a stake wagon body free of the foregoingV disadvantages. -Y f It is also an object to provide a rail or slat combined with stakes of novel construction.
Another Objectis to provide a stake body such that the slats may be more expeditiouslymounted slats extends inward relativer to the projected inner vertical planes of the box panels.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the description proceeds.
The invention will be better understood upon reference to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which:
` Fig. 1 is a top plan view, partly in section, of a stake body embodying features of myinvention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational View, partly in section, of the same. y
Fig. 3 is a front end elevational view of the same.
Figs. 4 and 5 are fragmentary enlarged sectional views taken as indicated by the lines 4-4 and 5 5, respectively, in Fig. 2. t
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, showing an illustrative embodiment of the invention, there appears generallyat I an opentopped box comprising side panels I2 having inner vertical slots I4 near the ends I6 thereof and also having lower longitudinal grooves I8; front and rear panels 20 and 22, respectively,
' with their ends 24 tte'd in thevertical slots and .with lower inner longitudinal grooves 26 at the same level as and communicating with the grooves I8; and a floor board 28 whose margins 30 are fitted in the grooves of the respective panels. The various parts thus far'described are assembled `by rst fitting the front and rear margins of the floor board 28 into the grooves 2 26 of the front andrear panels 20 and 22 and then moving the side panels I2 laterally toward the same so as to fit the ends 24 of the front and `rear panels into the slots I4 and the side margins of the floor boardinto the side panel grooves I8.- The assembly of panels and floor board is held rgidas by ytie rods 38 passing through holes 48 in the side panels I 2 and'nested in longitudinal innerV half-round grooves 42 in the front and rear panelsv and 22, each tie Y rod having a head llllwhich may be separated from the adjacent side panel by a washer 46, the opposite end of each tie rocl being threaded and receiving a nut 48 which may be separated from theadjacent side panel by a washer 46.
For the purpose of detachably connecting side and front slatsto the respective box panels to provide a stake body, I bore holes 52 in the various panels and line the walls of said holes with sleevesll, forming sockets 56. Secured to the" inner sides of the side slats 5l and frontand rear slats 58 and 68 areinverted U-shaped stake members 62 of preferably round steel or other suitable rod stock,v depressed as at 63 to provide spaced iiattened portions 64 through whichextend screws 56 threaded into the slats, whereby the stake members are securely anchored to the slats. The screw heads 68 preferably lie entirely within the respective depressions 63r so that they will not-snag on the person or clothing of anyone riding in or any object carried by the wagon. The arms 68 o f each stake member 62 serve Vas stakes and vproject below the slats a distance which is preferably substantially greater than the depth of the sockets 56 and fitsnugly and slidably therein, so that, when the slats are mounted, they are elevated a substantial dis-- tance, indicated at l2, from the panels'. Where,
- as shown, .the side panels I2 are' substantially I same dat wood or other suitable stock and are preferably substantially thinner than the box panels. If desired, the slats may rest on or be spaced at, any desired distance above the panels, and the side slats may be of the same height throughout or have any desired shape. The front and rear slats 58 and 60 preferably do not project above the adjacent portions of the side'slats 5l.
of outside and inside projections, presenting a Cil neat appearance, and that the various slats are.
and will not rattle.
Various modications coming Within the spirit iirmly yet detachably anchored to the panels tinuous groove, a slat associated with each panel, planar inverted U-shaped rods of circular crosssection and having spaced flat portions, fastening means passing through said flat portions and securing said rods to the inner sides of said slats, said fastening means being disposed entirely Within the connes of said rods and slats, said rods serving as stakes projecting below said slats and removably slidably engaged snugly in said pairs of sockets, said flat portions being in atwise engagement With said inner faces of said slats, said stakes Vbeing of greater length than said sockets, whereby, When said stakes are fully projected into said sockets, said slats are spaced abovesaid panels.

of my invention may suggest themselves to those f n skilled in the art, and hence I do not wish to be limited to the specic form shown or uses mentioned, except to the extent indicated in the appended claim, which is to be interpreted as broadly as the state of the art will permit.
I claim:
A stake body comprising a box having side and end panels, tie members passing through two opposite panels and embedded in the inner faces of the other two panels, all of said panels having longitudinally spaced pairs of vertically elongated upper sockets between the inner and outer faces thereof, said two opposite panels having vertical inner notches in which the ends of the other panels are seated, all of said panels having together a continuous horizontal groove,
