F. VOGT DRAWER GUIDE Dec. 23, 1930.

2 Sheets-Sheet l F. VOGT DRAWER GUID E Dec. 23, 1930.
Filed Sept. 1928 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 30 furniture already manufactured.
Patented Dec. 23, 1930 UNITED STATES- FRITZ veer, OF PORTLAND, OREGON DRAWER GUIDE Application filed September 27, 1928. Serial No. 308,616.
My invention relates to sliding drawerangle's to provide lateral guide-flanges, the
guides and the like.
At present, furniture such as desks, bureaus, cabinets and the like, which are manufactured in large quantities, entirely by machine methods, do not permit of the careful and accurate work of the cabinet maker, in fitting the drawers in their compartments; and to assure suliicient clearance for the sliding movement of the drawers, the compartments are made relatively larger than the drawer; this however permits lateral moveinent of the drawer in its compartment'with the result that if-the drawer is not moved in a line parallel with the side walls of the compartment, it will tend tostick and jam.
The object of my invention is to provide simple and efficient means, adapted to be economically manufactured from relatively light sheet metal in two operations, that is,
' drawers to bind and stick when being opened and closed, will be avoided.
A further object of my invention is to. provide an economical drawer guide, also adapted to be conveniently installed in pieces of A still further object of my invention is to provide a drawer guide, formed U-shaped in cross section, the sides of the U-shaped portionbeing spaced apart, so that the end of 3 the bolt securing the guide element carried by the drawer, may be projected downwardly, in the said U-shaped space, without interfering with the longitudinal movement of the drawer, thereby simplifying the attach- 40 ine-nt of the guide element to the drawer; and
further by adapting the guide-rail to extend through the front portion of the drawer compartment. The drawer will be adapted to be removed without detaching any part of the guide from either the drawer or its comparttremitics of the legs bent outward at right said legs having substantial height, the opp0- site ends of the legs having portions longitudinally slitted,and such portions being bent to project laterally, to provideears adapted for being fastened to the interior faces of the frame-bars of the structure, with the end portions of the drawer guide above said ears, extending over and supported by said frame bars, whereby to brace the latter, in combi nation with a drawer provided on its underside with guide-means cooperating with said drawer guide.
These and other incidental features of my invention, the details of construction and mode of installation are hereinafter more fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 shows a central longitudinal section taken through adrawer and its compartment and illustrates the embodiment of my invention'therewith;
Fig. 2 shows'a fragmentary view taken from the underside of a drawer and its compartmentand illustrates further details of arrangement;
. Fig. 3 shows a fragmentary perspective view of my drawerguide;
Fig. 4 shows a perspective View of a drawer with the guide element affixed thereto;
Fig. 5 shows a section taken on the line 55 of Fig. 1 and illustrates further details of construction; and
Fig. 6 shows a fragmentary, perspective view of a drawer and its compartment and the relative arrangement of my guide therein.
My invention comprises with reference to th figures, an elongate guide-rail a. U-shaped in cross section, with the legs thereof forming an intermediate space b between, the said legs being provided at their tops with longitudinal, outwardly projecting flanges 0, (Z,
perpendicular to the said U-shapcd portion.
The rear end of the guide-rail is provided with lateral ears 6, perpendicular to the said flanges 0, (Z and the forward end of the guiderail is cut away as at f and provided with similar ears (1, located inwardly of the end thereof.
As shown in Figs. 2 and 6 the guide-rail a is adapted to be centrally and longitudinally arranged in the bottom plane of the drawer compartment in parallel alignment with the side walls 2 and secured to the rear wall 3 and the front section 4, by the ears 6, and g, respectively, by screws or other suitable means inserted through holes a, g. A notch 4a is formed-in the front section 4 to accommodate the projecting forward ends of the guide-rail a.
A guide element 7' is provided adapted to be secured to the underside ofthe drawer bottom 6, comprising inturned companion portions in, adapted to be slidably arranged over the flanges c and d, Fig. 5.
The guide element is secured to the bottom of the drawer by bolts on or similar means, the head m of which will be flush with the inner surface of the drawer bottom and the other end of which will project downwardly into the space 6 between the U-shaped sidesof the guide, to which a nut m may be threaded.
By this construction the downwardly projecting portion of the bolt and its nut will be accommodated without interfering with the sliding movement of the drawer.
Further, by providing a notch 4a in the front section of the drawer compartment and extending the guide-rail until it is flush with the outer surface of the compartment, the drawer may be removed, without detaching any part of the drawer guide from either the drawer or its compartment.
Furthermore, by forming the guide-rail U-shaped in cross section, with a substantial space between the sides, the tendency of the metal to break while being folded is reduced.
I claim:
1. In a structure having a drawer, a drawer-guide comprising a one-piece metal sheet formed U-shaped in cross-section, with the upper extremities of the legs bent outward at right angles to provide lateral guideflariges, the said legs having substantial height, the opposite ends of the legs having portions longitudinally slitted, and such portions being bent to project laterally, to provide ears adapted for being fastened to the interior faces of the frame-bars of the structure, with the end portions of the drawer guide above said ears,.extending over and supported by said frame-bars, whereby to brace the latter, in combination with a drawer provided on its underside with guide-means cooperating with said drawer guide.
2. In a structure having a drawer, a
drawer-guide comprising .a one-piece metal sheet formed U-shaped in cross-section, with the upper extremities of the legs bent outward at right angles to provide lateral guideflanges, the said legs having substantial height, the opposite ends of the legs having portions longitudinally slitted, and such porthe latter.
