To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that 1, WILLIAM MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, in the city and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Machine for Edging Metallic Roofing- Plates, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a machine for edging metallic roofing-plates, with the object in view of providing a hand-machine, as distinguished from a power-machine,which shall be efficient and inexpensive and which shall be capable of materially reducing the time and labor of the edging operation.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of the machine in side elevation. Fig. 2 is a partial front elevation. Fig. 3 is a top plan view. Fig. tie a view in detail showing the position of the bending-tool as it completes its operation. Fig. 5 represents a sheet half-edged. Fig. 6 is an edge View of the same, and Fig. 7 is a view of a sheet completely edged. I
The present machine is designed to simultaneously turn the two adjacent edges of a sheet by a single depression of the foot, the operator then turning and reversing the plate for turning the remaining two edges of the sheet in the opposite direction by a second depression of the foot.
A represents the supporting-frame, which may be of any approved form suitable to the purposes in hand. It is here shown as composed of skeleton sides connected by guides and having a general rectangular shape in horizontal section.
A flat table B is provided at the top of the frame A for holding the sheet S to be edged while the edging-tools are operating on it. The table B is provided with straight edges 1) b,adjacent to and extending at right angles to each other, and so located with respect to the edging-tools as to serve as anvils over which the edges of the sheets are bent. The bending-tools are quite similar in structure, and hence a particular description of one will suffice for both.
A hub or sleeve 0 is mounted on a spindle D, supported in the upper ends of a pair of flexible standards E. The lower ends of the standards E are fixed to the supporting-frame A, and their upper ends are free to move bodily toward and away from the edge of the sheet. The hub or sleeve 0 is provided with a bending lip or flange 0, extending the length of the edge to be bent and with a tailpiece c, to which the operating-rod F is attached for rocking the hub or sleeve to effect the bending of the edge of the sheet. The hub or sleeve 0 is further provided with an arm 0 carrying an antifriction-roller in its end in position to engage the tailpiece g of the rocking clamp G for pressing the plate firmly on the table B while the bending operation takes place. The clamp g is attached to a rocking spindle g, mounted in the overhanging arms h h of a bracket H, secured to the supporting-frame, and a coiled spring 9 having one end attached to the spindle and the other to one of the arms h or h, serves to retract the clamp out of engagement with the sheet when the bending is completed. The bracket H also has thereon a cam extension 7L2 in position to engage the end of the'tailpiece (2' as the latter is forced upwardly by the rod F to move the bending-tool bodily toward the edge of the sheet to complete the bending of its edge. The edge of the clamp G, which is forced into engagement with the sheet, is preferably provided with some tough yielding material g -such, for example, as rubber or leather-to prevent chafing the sheet and to adapt the clamp to sheets of slightly-varyingthicknesses. Asimilarbendin g-tool and clamp are located on the adjacent side of the machine to that occupied by the parts just described, audits operating-rod F is connected with the foot-lever K through an intervening horizontal lever L and rod F leading from the lever L to the foot-lever intermediate of its fulcrum 7t and its treadle it, while the operating-rod F extends directly to the foot-lever K on the opposite side of its fulcrum. By means of these connections a downward movement of the pedal lifts the tailpieces on both the bending-tools and simultaneously brings the tools into engagement with the two adjacent edges of the sheet, bending the edges downwardly and inwardly. This having been accomplished, the operator may turn the sheet half-way around edgewise and reverse it and again bring the tools into engagement with the remaining edges to turn them in a direction opposite that in which the edges were first turned, and the sheet is then ready for use on the roof.
It is obvious that changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. Hence I do not wish to limit myself strictly to the structure shown anddescribed; but
What I claim is 1. The combination with means for supporting the sheet in position to be operated upon, of a bending-tool mounted to rock and movable bodily toward and away from the edge of the sheet, the said bending-tool being provided with a lip or flange in position to engage the edge of the sheet, means for rocking the tool, and means for moving the tool bodily toward and away from the edge of the sheet during its rocking movement, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with means for holding the sheet in position, of a flexible support, a rocking tool mounted in the flexible support and means for rocking the tool and forcing the flexible support and tool thereon toward the edge of the sheet of metal, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with a support for the sheet to be operated upon and a sheet-holder, of a rocking tool for engaging the edge of the sheet, means in connection with the rocking tool for operating the sheet-holder and means for operating the tool and hence the sheet holder, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination with a sheet-support and a spring-actuated sheet-holder mounted over the edge of the sheet, of a rocking tool for engaging the edge of the sheet, an arm on the rocking tool for operating the spring-actuated sheet-holder and means for rocking the tool, substantially as set forth.
