As the pasting operations proceed the stacks of color chips 19 are gradually depleted making it necessaryto raise the frame 12 and the perforated plate 14 to a higher elevation and in order that this lift may not be too great I provide means for limiting the downward movement of'the frame and its component parts at a number of different points which means comprises a plurality of ratchet teeth 21 on the upright or pitman 16 for connection with the pivoted pawl 22 which latterhas an arm 23 connected with the piston rod 24 of a dash pot 25, said dash-potfiabsorbing the shock due to the return of, the downward movement of the frame and its component parts.
Since the color chips are to be forced against a folder sheetlback'ed by a substantially immovable element and since these color chips maybe -,of different thicknesses or more chips be placed in one stack than another compressible pads 26 of any suit able material, such as copper felt or the like underlie each stack of said colo-rchips and are held in place by pins 18, in the same manner as said chips. From. this it will be seen that if one stack of chips is slightly higher than another the highest stack will contact with the folder sheet as will be later described and as the frame withthe plate 14 is forced upward the compressible pad of said highest stack will be compressed sufficiently to permit the other stacksof chips to contact or engage with the folder, sheet.
Between the locationof the folder sheets 7 and-the location of the stacks of color chips is situated theadhesive applying-deice designated as a whole by the numeral 27; This device consists of a pair of upright brackets 28 secured, to the top 3 by suitable fastening device's 29 ,the said plates being vertically slotted as at 30 throughwhich pass trunnions 31 carried by the ends of the adhesive container or receptacle 3 2, said trunnions havin'gbutterfly nuts 33 or their equivalent for threaded engagement therewithfor holding-the adhesive receptacle in any desired vertical adjustment.
WVithin this adhesive receptacle is journalled a shaft 34 having a plurality of adindicated at 37, butlsaid teeth differ from the teeth of an ordinary gear in that they are of the same cross section throughout.
One end of the-shaft 34 projects throughone or the front end of the adhesive container or receptacle beyond the bracket 28 and on this projecting end of the shaft is mounted a gear wheel 38 for 'coactionwitli a gear rack carried by a carriage to be presently described. Projecting from the outer surface of the gear wheel 38 isa pin 39 for a purpose also to behereinafter described.
When thegear wheel and its component parts are in one position it is desirabletoso hold them by slight pressure which is provided by a spring 40 fixed to the underside of the adhesive receptaclepassing through a slot 41 inthe bracket 28 with its nose turned upfor registration with a slightdepression running entirely from one end to the other I of the adhesive receptacle and this is adjustably mounted on. saidr'eceptacle and held in any desired adjustment by means'of the set screws 44 and this wiper is set so as tolie in close proximity to theccircumfenence of the applicators but not in contact therewith.
