The invention relates to silk screen printing machines adapted for printing slgns, posters, cards, etc., on any materlal, such as paper, wood, metal, cloth and cardboard, and
particularly adapted for multi-color pictures wherein is used what is known as a screen process, and wherein is used a silk screen as a stencil to regulate the application of paint or color over predetermined areas of the stock. A further object is to provide the machine with a convexed stencil carrying frame having a rocking contact with the flat stock at the working point only, thereby permitting the separatlon of the screen and stock without sticking as is now the difliculty experienced where the screen is flat.
A further object is to provide a silk screen printing machine comprising a frame having a rockable convexed screen carrying frame, a stock carrying bed adjacent the convexed side of the screen frame and means for rockably A moving the screen carrying frame on the bed and applying ink to a screen for progressively and rockably, printing on the stock on the bed.
A further object is to provide a printing machine comprising a frame having rockably mounted therein a screen carrying frame having a downwardly disposed convexed side,
3') a stock carrying member-beneath the rockable frame and movable towards and away from the rockable frame and means for simultaneously rocking the rockable screen carry ing frame and applying liquid coloring matter to the screen at its point of engagement with stock on the bed as the point of engagement advances during the rocking operation.
A further object is to provide a table to one side of the machine and having tracks,
0 onto which tracks the roller supported bed may be moved, thereby allowing stock to be easily and quickly placed on the bed and removed therefrom.
A further object is to provide lever control 4 means for raising and lowering the wheel supported bed plate in relation to the rockable screen frame, and to provide a squeegee carriage longitudinally movable with its squeegee in engagement with the inner side of the screen at its point of" contact during the rocking operation, and means carried b the carriage and cooperating with the roe able screen carrying frame for rocking the same during the movement of the carriage.
A further object is to provide the ends of the main frame of the' machine with constantly driven shafts having sprockets rotatably mounted thereon and having an endless chain extending over said sprockets "with one flight cooperatm' with s aced squee ees on the carriage for orcing elther of sai squeegees in engagement with the screen according to the direction of movement of the carriage and controllable clutch means for driving either sprocket.
A further object is to provide members carried by the carriage and cooperating with the sprocket clutches on the driven shaft for automatically stopping the movement of the carriage when itreaches its extreme movements in either direction.
A further object is to provide automatically control .ed means for holding the rockable frame in tilted position and manually controlled means for releasing said last named means.
A further object is to mount the squeegee carrying members in downwardly diverging slotsof side plates carried by the carriage, a rock shaft connecting said plates and provided with upwardly extending T-shaped brackets, the depending arms of which are mounted on the rock shaft and the other opposite arms provided with 'link connections with the squeegee, whereby when one squeegee is forced downwardly into engagement with the silk screen for forcing the paint or coloring matter therethrough,-the other will be raised. Also to provide, the rock shaft with a depending arm, to which is connected one of the flights of the sprocket chain, whereby upon initial movement of the sprocket chain flight, one or the other of the squeegees will be forced downwardly or raised, according to the direction of movement of the chain.
A further object is to mount the squeegee carriage between rails formed from channeled members having inwardly extending flanges, inwardly and outwardly adjustable plates carried by the lower sides of the chan- 2 aeeaeoe neled members and on which is rockably mounted the screen carrying frame, convex side downwardly, plates carried by the frame and engaging the inwardly and outwardly adjustable plates, and to provide guide wheels carried by the sides of the carriage and engaging the under sides of the upper flanges of the channel bars.
A further object is to provide the sides of the carriage frame intermediate the spaced guide wheels thereof with frame rocking wheels, which rocking wheels engage the plates carried by the screen frame and rock said screen frame incident to the curvature of said plates.
A further object is to provide means whereby the rockable frame may be removed downwardly from its position within the main frame of the machine, thereby allowing easy access thereto for repair and replacement purposes, and for placing the silk screen therein if so desired.
A further object is to provide the under side of the screen frame with channels for receiving the edges of the silk screen, locking strips disposed in said channels, vertically movable screw control members extending downwardly through the rails of the screen frame and provided with lugs underlying the locking strips for forcing the same into binding engagement with the screen edges within the channels.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates opposite side rails of the main frame 2, and which rails are preferably formed from channel members having their flanges 3 and 4 extending inwardly. The ends of the side rails 1 are connected together by flanged end members 5 and the frame 2 is supported by downwardly extending legs 6 having their lower ends braced by the brace bars 7, which are preferably formed from angle iron.
Vertically movable below the main frame 2 is a bed plate supporting frame 8 having transverse tracks 9, on which are mounted the rollers 10 carried by the bed plate 11. The bed plate 11 is adapted to be moved upwardly and downwardly beneath the frame 2 for positioning a sheet of paper or other stock on the bed plate adjacent the rockable stencil frame, hereinafter set forth, thereby allowing the stock to be easily and quickly changed, and by mounting the bed plate 11 on the rollers 10, it will be seen that when the bed plate frame 8 is lowered to positions where the tracks 9 will be in alinement with the tracks 12 on the supporting table 13, the bed plate 11 may be moved outwardly for positioning stock thereon or for handling the stencil frame, which is removable from the main frame 2, particularly in applying stencils thereto. Extending downwardly from the ends of the movable bed plate frame 8 are spaced bars 14 braced by rods 15 at their lower ends, and rotatably mounted between said members 14 are flanged wheels 16, which engage the V-shaped guide bars 17 and guide the frame 8 accurately in its upward and downward movement.
Rockably mounted in bearings'of the brace bars 7 at the ends of the machine is a rock shaft 18, the ends of which are provided with upwardly extending levers 19, adjacent the ends of the machine and adapted to be grasped by the operator for controlling the upward and downward movement of the bed plate frame 8 during the operation of the machine. Two levers are provided so that the same can be controlled from either end of the machine. The rock shaft 18 is provided with upwardly extending arms 20, the upper ends of which are pivotally connected at 21 to the lower ends of upwardly extending links 22. Links 22 have their upper ends pivotally connected to a shaft 23 carried by the frame 8, therefore it will be seen by manipulating the levers 19, frame 8 can be raised and lowered as desired. The pivoted ends of the arms 20 and links 22 are provided with outwardly extending arms 24, one of which is provided with an adjusting screw 25for cooperating with the other arm for limiting the movement of the frame 8 and control parts in the upward movement of the frame 8.
Extending upwardly from opposite ends of the side channel bars 1 are brackets 26, in which are rotatably mounted constantl driven shafts 27, one of the ends of whic is provided with pulleys 28 belted together by the crossed belt 29, whereby the shafts 27 will rotate in opposite directions, for instance when one of the shafts 27 rotates in the direction of arrow a, Figure 1, the other shaft will rotate in the direction of the arrow 6, for ap lying a combined squeegee and movement of the carriage 30 through the mechanism hereinafter set forth, according to the direction of movement of the carriage 30.

having flanged wheels 32 on their outer sides, which engage the under sides of the flanges 3 of the channels 1, and are provided on their inner sides with rock wheels 33 located intermediate the wheels 32 and which rock wheels, during the longitudinal movement of the carriage, roll over the curved rocker plates 34, carried by the under side of the downwardly convexed stencil carrying frame 35, therefore it will be seen that as the carriage moves longitudinally in either direction, the screen carrying frame 35 will be rocked for. progressively printing the card or sheet on the bed member 11, thereby allowing the bed member and its stock, which may be tacked or otherwise secured thereto, to be moved out of engagement with the stock without the formation of a suction or vacuum between the silk screen 36 and the stock, consequently preventing smearing, and waste of material incident to smearing, which is the common difliculty now experienced with flat stencil frames. 4
Extending upwardly from the side plates 1 are plates 37 having a rock shaft 38 mounted therein, and which rock shaft is also mounted on the, rock shaft 38, thereb forming a rigid structure and thoroughly racing the squeegee mechanism carried by the carriage during its operation.
Rockably mounted on the shaft 38 are the downwardly extending arms 44 of the T- brackets 45. T-brackets 45 have their arms 46 extending in opposite directions and terminate in lugs 47 which extend towards each other. Pivotally connected at 48 to the lugs 47 are downwardly extending links 49, the lower ends of which are pivotally connected at 50 to the upper sides of the slidable squeegee frames 51. Squeegee frames 51 are provided with rubber squeegees 52, the lower which is connected at 58 to the lower flight 59 of the sprocketchain 60. It will be seen that when the lower flight 59 of the sprocket chain moves in one direction or the other,
" one or the other of the squeegee frames 51 will be forced downwardly in the guide channels 61 of the plates 40, and the other squeegee moved upwardly, therefore it will be seen that the squeegee action on the screen will take place, no matter in which direction the carriage moves. The squeegee frames 51 are preferably formed from spaced plates 62 connected together by bolts 63, which bolts extend through the rubber squeegees 52, and by detachably mounting the squeegees 52, they may be renewed as desired or turned so that their upper edges may be used.
The silk screen frame 35 is preferably rectangular shaped and builtup from inner and outer bars 64-and 65, better shown in Figure 7, and which bars are connected together by bolts 66. Vertically slidable between the bars 65 and 64 are strip holding members 67 having arms 68 above the bars 64 and arms 69 below the bars 64 and underlying the screen holding strips 70. Strips 70 extend into the channels 71 and are adapted to clamp the edge of the screen 36, as clearly shown in Figure 7. Extending through an aperture in the arm 68 of each clamping member 67 is a. bolt 72 having a nut 73 threaded thereon and engagingthe under side of the arm 68, and it will be seen by tightening the nut 73 against the arm 68, the arm 69 will engage the rocking strip 70 and securely jam thesame into the channel 71, and into engagement with the marginal side of the screen 36. Referring to Figure 5, it will be noted that the screen frame 35 is arcuate shaped and will rock on the flat supporting plates 74 secured to the under side of the flanges 4 of the side bars 1 by means of bolts 75. Bolts 75 extend through transversely disposed slots 76 in the plates 74, therefore it will be seen by loosening the bolts 75, the plates 74 may be moved outwardly incident to the elongated slots therein to positions where they will not underlie the curved shoe plates 34 of the frame, therefore it will be seen that the frame may be easily removed from the machine supported on the bed plate 11, and thence transversely onto the table 13, supported on the tracks of said table.
The end 77 of one of the shafts 27 may when one sprocket 78 or 79 is in clutched relation with either shaft 27, the T-brackets 45 will be rocked, forcing one of the squeegee members downwardly into engagement with the silk screen 36 and simultaneously raising the other squeegee 52, for instance to the position shown in Figure 12, and the continued movement of the lower flight 59 of the sprocket chain will move the carriage ion gitudinally of the machine, dragging the squeegee, which is down, over the screen, and at the same time the carriage rollers 31, which engage the curved shoe plates 34 carried by the screen frame will cause the frame to have a rocking action for advancing the point of contact between the screen and the stock or sheet of paper on the bed plate 11. Slidably keyed on the shaft 27 are clutch elements 80 controlled by horizontally pivoted arms 81 having downwardly extending shafts 82, which are rockably mounted in the sleeves 83. Arms 81 have clutch yokes 84 which are con- 30 nected in the usual manner to the clutch elements 80 and have their inner ends provided with angularly disposed portions 85 in the path of vertical rods 86 carried by the carriage, and which rods are positioned whereby they will move the clutch elements 80 to declutched position when the carriage approaches the end of its movement, therefore it will be seen that damage to the mechanism will be prevented.
Pivotally connected at 87 to the lower ends of the shafts 82 are vertically movable arms 88, which arms are substantially parallel to the end bars 5 of the main frame 2 and are provided with pins 89 which extend through apertures 90 in the end bars, and into the path of downwardly extending curved arms 91 carried by the transverse shafts 92, which are rockably mounted at the ends of the main frame 2. Assuming the carriage has reached the ends of its movement, referring to Figure 4, and has moved the clutch element 80 out of clutched relation with the sprocket 78, and in which position the end of the rockable frame 35, beneath the carriage, will be rocked downwardly, the flange 93 will engage arm 94 of the adjacent lever 88, and will swing said lever downwardly, thereby stretching the coiled spring 95, however the pin 89 will be below and out of the path of the adacent member 91: therefore when it is desired to move the carriage in the opposite direction, the operator grasps the other handle member 96, controlling the rod 92 at the opposite end of the machine, and as the pin 89, at said end of the machine, is in the path of the member 91, the vertically disposed shaft 88 will be rocked, thereby moving the clutch element 80 into clutched relation with the sprocket 79, thereby driving the lower flight 59 of the sprocket chain in the opposite direction. The above operation continues for each printing operation. To. prevent simultaneous clutch operation of clutch elements 80, the rear ends of the shafts 92 are provided with oppositely extending arms 97 having a link connection 98, thereby insuring a positive operation at all times.
Plates 93 have mounted thereon guide rollers 99, which engage the upwardly inclining edges 100 of the guide plates 101, and it will be noted that a positive rocking operation of the frame 35 will be insured without any longitudinal movement thereby preventing smearing during the printing operation, and during the longitudinal movement of the carriage and consequent rocking of the screen frame 35. The main frame of the machine is preferably provided with guides 102 for accurately guiding the bed 11 to position .beneath the frame upon upward movement thereof.
From the above it will be seen that a silk screen printing machine is provided which is simple in construction, provided with means whereby the screen carrying frame will rock whereby the printing operation is a rocking one, thereby allowing the printed sheet to be moved out of engagement with the screen without smearing of the work incident to the relatively small contact area between the screen and the printed sheet. It will also be seen that-the printed sheet may be easily and quickly lowered with bed plate 11 and removed from the bed plate and passed to another machine for the application of another color or design thereto, thereby allowing the printing process to be a continuous one.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful-is 1. The combination with a silk screen printing machine, of a vertically movable stock receiving bed plate carried by said machine and a screen carrying frame above the bed plate and adapted to rockably cooperate with stock on the bed plate during a printing operation when the bed plate is in its upper position.
2. The combination with a silk screen printing machine, of a downwardly convexed screencarrying frame rockably mounted in the machine, means for rocking said screen frame, a vertically movable stock carrying bed plate beneath the screen frame and adapted in its upper position to support stock in flat position during a rockable printing operation of the screen frame for a printing operation on the stock.
3. The combination with a screen printing machine, of a downwardly convexed screen carrying frame rockably mounted in the machine, a fiat bed plate beneath the screen frame and adapted to support stock for a printing operation, a carriage longitudinally movable, squeegee elements carr ed by the carriage and adapted to cooperate with a screen in the screen carrying frame, means for movin .said carriage longitudinally, said screen carrying frame.

5. The combination with a screen printing machine comprising a frame, a flat stock receiving bed plate carried by the frame, of a rockable screen carrying frame downwardly convexed. above the bed plate, a carriage longitudinally movable in the frame, means for reciprocating said carriage in the frame, squeegee means carried by the carriage and disposed within the frame and adapted to cooperate with the screen therein, said carriage cooperating with the screen carrying frame for rocking the same during the reciprocation of the carriage.
6. The combination with a screen printing machine, a stock receiving bed plate carried thereby, of a rockable screen carrying frame cooperating with the bed plate, a carriage cooperating with the screen carrying frame and forming means for rocking said frame, means for moving said carriage longitudinally, said means also forming means for controlling squeegee elements carried by the carriage.
7. A silk screen printing machine comprising a frame, a flat bed plate vertically movable in said frame, a rockabledownwardly convexed screen carrying frame rockably mounted above the bed plate, a longitudinally movable carriage mounted in the frame, means for moving said carriage longitudinally, said carriage cooperating with the screen carrying frame for rocking the same and squeegee means carried by the carriage and cooperating with a screen carried by the screen frame.
8. A silk screen printing machine comprising a. frame, a fiat bed plate'mounted in said frame, a rockable downwardly convexed screen-carrying frame above the bed plate and cooperating therewith, a longitudinally movable carriage mounted in-the frame, means for moving said carriage longitudinally, said carnage having a screen engaging squee ee element, said carriage mov ng means a o forming means for squee cc element. 1

A silkscreen printing machine comprising a frame, a bed plate carried by said frame, a convexed screen carrying frame/cooperating with the bed plate, a screen squeegee within the screen frame, means for rockmg the screen frame, said last named means controlling the operation of the screen squeegee.
12. A silk screen printing machine comprising a frame, a bed plate carried by said frame, a downwardly convexed screen carrying frame cooperating with the bed plate, a
carriage'longitudinally movable in the frame, a screen squeegee carried by said carriage and disposed within the rockable screen carried frame, means for moving said carriage longitudinally, said screen squeegee being carried by the carriage and controlled by the carriage moving means and clutch controlled means cooperating with the squeegeecontrol means and the carriage for moving said carriage in opposite directions.
13. The combination with a silk screen printing machine having a rockable screen carrying frame therein, a bed plate with which said screen carrying plate cooperates, of a longitudinally movable carriage carried by the machine and cooperating with the screen carrying frame for rocking the same,
squeegee means carried by said carriage and adapted to cooperate with a screen on the screencarrying frame, clutch control drive means at opposite ends of the machine-for moving the carriage in opposite directions and means carriedby the carriage for declutching the clutch control drive means at the ends of the movements of the carriage.
14. The combination with a silk screen printing machine, rockable screen carrying frame, said frame being rockably mounted in the frame of the machine, of a wheel supported carriage mounted in guides of the machine frame, spaced squeegees carried by said carriage and extending into the rockably mounted screen carrying frame, means for imparting movement to the carriage longitudinally in either direction, clutches for controlling said last named means, means carried by the carriage for declutching the clutch means at the ends of the movement of the carriage, said carriage moving means also forming means for alternately moving the squeegees downwardly.
15. The combination with a rockably mounted downwardly convexed screen carrying frame, said frame being mounted in a printing machine, of means for rocking said frame, said means comprising a wheel supported carriage longitudinally movable in the frame of the machine, means carried by the carriage and cooperating with the rockable frame for rocking the same according to the direction of movement of the carriage, spaceddownwardly movable squeegees carried by the carriage and disposed within the screen frame, driven shafts at the ends of the machine, said shafts being rotatable in opposite directions, sprockets rotatably mounted on the shafts, clutch elements carried by the sprockets, an endless chain extending over said sprockets, slidable'clutch elements carried by the shafts horizontally pivoted and movable levers cooperating with the slidable clutch elements, cam arms carried by the slidable clutch elements in the path of members carried by the carriage, said sprocket chain having one of its flights cooperating with the carriage for moving the same and with the squeegees for alternately controlling the downward movement of the same.
16. The combination with a screen printing machine comprising a frame, a rockable convexed screen carrying frame mounted in the machine frame, a carriage longitudinally movable in the machine frame, means carried by the carriage and cooperating with the rockable frame for rocking the same according to the direction of movement of the carriage, spaced squeegee elements carried by the carriage and adapted to be alternatel moved into operative and inoperative positions, clutch control means at the ends of the machine frame for moving the carriage and alternately operating the squeegee and means carried by the carriage and cooperating with the clutch control means for declutching the same at the ends of the movements of the carriage.
17. The combination with a screen printing machine comprising a convexed screen carrying frame rockabl mounted in a mam frame, of means for roc ing said screen carrying frame, said means comprising a wheel supported and guided carriage mounted in the main frame and cooperating) with the rockable frame, squeegees carried y the carriage and cooperating with the screen frame an clutch control drive means cooperating with the squeegees and carriage for moving the squeegees to operative and inoperative position and simultaneously moving the carriage.
18. The combination with a screen print ing machine comprising a convexed screen carrying frame rockably mounted in a main frame, of means for rocking said screen carrying frame, said means comprising a wheel supported and guided carriage, longitudinally movable in the main frame and cooperating with the rockable frame, squeegees carried by the carriage and cooperating with the screen frame, clutch control drive means cooperating with the squeegees and carriage for alternately moving the squeegees to operative position'and inoperative position according to direction of movement of carriage and simultaneously moving the carriage, and means carried by the carriage and cooperat' with the clutch control drive means for rdfi ering the same inoperative at the ends of the movements of the carriage.
19. The combination with a screen printing machine having a carriage rocked convexed screen carrying frame, clutch control drive means for moving the carriage in o posite directions, screen squeegees carrie by the carriage and moved to operative and inoperative positions upon movement of the carriage and spring means cooperating with the ends of the rockable frame when in their down position for moving the same upwardly.
20. The combination with a screen printing machine comprising a frame, a curved rockable screen carrying frame within the main frame, means for attaching a screen to the under side of the screen carrying frame, of a carriage for controlling said screen carrying frame, said carriage having spaced wheels at its opposite sides, said wheels extending into channels of the main frame, curved shoe plates carried by opposite sides of the screen carrying frame, inwardly and outwardly adjustable plates carried by the channels of the main frame and underlying the shoe plates, wheels carried by opposite sides of the carriage and engaging the shoe plates, squeegees carried by the carriage and adapted to cooperate with a screen carried by the screen frame and means for moving said carriage longitudinally in the main frame.
21. The combination with a curved rockable screen frame, rockably mounted between channel bars of a main frame, of a longitudinally movable carria e between said channel bars, spaced whee s carried by the ends of the carriage and engaging the upper flanges of the channel bars and within the channel bars, curved shoe plates carried by the rockable frame and extending towards the channels, plates carried by the under sides of the channels and underl ing the shoe plates, means for moving said last named plates from beneath the shoe plates, wheels carried by the carriage and engaging the shoe plates and ada ted to roll thereover, squee ee means carried y the carriage and means or moving said carriage longitudinally beneath the channel bars.
22. The combination with a curved rockably mounted screen frame of a printing machine, said frame being rockabl mounted between channel bars of a main rame, of a longitudinally movable carriage between said channel bars, spaced wheels carried by the carriage and engaging the under sides of the upper flanges of the channels, curved shoe plates carried by the screen frame and extending toward the channels, rock wheels carried by the channels and engaging the shoe plates and adapted to roll thereover, inwardly and outwardly adjustable supporting plates carried by the channels and underlying the shoe plates, spaced downwardly and upwardly movable squeegees carried by the carriage and means cooperating with the carriage for simultaneously moving the same and moving one of the squeegees to operative position and the other to inoperative position according to the direction of movement of the carriage.
23. The combination with a longitudinally movable carriage mounted in a screen printing machine and cooperating with a screen frame, of spaced upwardly and downwardly movable Squeegees carried by the carriage and extending into the screen frame, means for moving the carriage, said means simultaneously coo rating with the Squeegees whereby one 0 said squee ees will be moved to operative position and t e other to inoperative position u on movement of the carnage in either direction.
24. The combination with a longitudinally movable carriage, mounted in a screen printing machine and cooperating with a screen frame, of spaced upwardly and downwardly movable s ueegees carried by the carriage and extending into the screen frame, means for moving said carriage, means for simultaneously moving the squeegees upwardl and downwardly, said means comprising roc member's carried by the carriage, link connections between the squeegees and rock members, said carriage moving means having rocking connections with the rock members.
25. A screen frame for screen printing machines comprising inner and outer rectangular frames, screen ed receiving grooves in the under side of the inner frame, means for securing said frames to ether, vertical members slidably mounted tween the frames, the lower ends of said members having arms overlying the channels in the under side of the inner frame, strips in said channels, arms carried by the vertically slidable members and extending inwardly above the inner frame and means cooperating with said last named arms and the upper side of the inner frame for forcing the slidable members upwardly.
26. The combination with a screen frame, of means for holding the marginal edges of a screen, saidmeans comprising members slid- -abl mounted in the frame, channels having 100 ring strips in the under side of the frame, means cooperating with the slidable members for forcing the same upwardly and arms carried by the slidable members and underlying the strips.
