UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JEROME B. IVILSON, OF LANSING, MICHIGAN.
WEAR-TIP FOR PLOW-POINTS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 655,385, dated August 7, 1900.
Application filed NovemberZZ, 1899. Serial No. 737,941. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEROME B. WILsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lansing, in the county of Ingham and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wear-Tips for Plow- Points; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in plows; and the object in view is to increase the durability of the plow-point by adapting it to withstand for a greater length of time the frictional wear thereon.
With such object in view the invention consists in casting upon the under side of the plow-point or securing thereto in any suitable manner a superficial reinforcing Wear point or tip, which tip is so constructed as to have the proper pitch for entering the ground, will form a continuation of the point proper, and which will not impede the progress of the plow.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the under side of a plowpoint having a wear-tip embodying my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail of the tip. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional View of the same.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
The point 1 of the plow is of the ordinary construction or formation and has cast upon its under side a reinforcing wear-tip 2, which extends below the bottom edge of the plow, as shown, and hence takes the wear from the point. The tip comprises the opposite sides 3, which are in the form of prongs whose upper sides are flat and are cast to the bottom of the point. These prongs are V-shaped or triangular in cross-section, their lower edges being reduced, as shown. The prongs are connected at their front ends by a transverse portion 4, whose front face is beveled at 5, so
as to form a continuation of the point of the plow. The under side of the transverse por- 13101141: is beveled at 6 in a like manner, as are the inner sides of the side portions 3, so that the reduced edge 7 extends along the front end of the tip and along the bottom edges of the sides. The bottom edges of the sides are given a certain pitch or downward disposition, so as to cause the beveled portion 5 to readily engage with the earth when the plow is beginning an operation.
The tip is of about the same thickness as the point, so that it must fully wear away before the actual point comes in contact with the ground and receives any wear Whatever. Thus it will be seen that I increase the durability of the plow twofold. In fact, before the point is destroyed and requires repairing both it and the wear-tip must be wholly worn away, whereas in the ordinary plow a wear ing away of the point requires its reproduction.
Although I prefer to cast the tip to the un-' the bottom edge of the plow, said reinforcing tip comprising a rectangular figure having opposed parallel sides and a transverse front portion, substantially as specified.
2. A plow-point provided with a reinforcing-tip cast thereon, extending below the bottom edge of the plow and comprising the op posed sides and front transverse portion, said transverse portion being beveled upon its upper face forming a continuation of the point, substantially as specified.
3. The herein-described tip, comprising the opposite sides and the front transverse por tion, said sides being given a pitch, substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. The herein-described wear-tip for plows, the same consisting of the opposite sides having their inner surfaces beveled, the transverse connecting portion having its under side beveled to agree therewith, whereby transverse and opposite reduced running edges are provided, said transverse portion having its upper side beveled to agree with the upper side of the plow-point, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JEROME B. WILSON. Witnesses:
