INVENTOR WYTZVESSES STATES PATENT Tries.
IVILLIAM lI. MOORE, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR TO II. F. MILLER & SON, OF SAME PLACE.
METAL BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Iatent No. 655,348, dated August '7, 1900. Application filed December 31, 189']. Serial No. 664,958. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, W'ILLIAM H. MOORE, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in boxes, and more particularly to such as are employed for baking-powder and similar materials, the object of the invention being to so construct the box as to avoid external peripheral projections, and thus facilitate the application of labels to the boxes by machinery.
WVit-h this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view of a box illustrating my invent-ion. Fig. 2 is a view of a modification.
In the form of my invention shown in Fig. l the upper end of the box A is thrown in by any suitable machine or device, whereby to form an inwardly-disposed annular flange 1 at the upper end of the box. The cover B of the box is made with a depending flange 2, adapted to embrace the flange 1 and rest at its free edge against the shoulder 3 at the base of said flange 1. The cover will thus be limited in its movement when placed on the box, and the flange 2 of the cover will be flush with the exterior of the box. It will also be seen that the cover will be so disposed as to project above the body of the box, which is a desirable feature with boxes of this nature.
It is a matter of common knowledge in the art that sheet-tin varies more or less in thickness, and in order to avoid the possibility on this account of a cover being large enough to overlap the shoulder 3 I prefer to provide the flange 2 of the cover with an inwardly-proj ectin g bead 4, which will rest when the cover is in place on the upper edge of the box. Thus all boxes will be of uniform length, so that the labels will properly fit them.
In the form of the invention shown in Fig.
2 the flange of the cover is thrown in to form an inwardly-disposed flange 5 to enter the body of the box, the shoulder 6 at the upper end of said flange resting on the upper edge of the box. In this form of the invention I prefer to provide the body of the box with an inwardly-projecting bead 7 to receive the free edge of the flange 5 in view of the inequality of thickness in tin, as above explained.
It will be observed that in both the forms of the invention the cover is properly limited and that a portion thereof projects above the upper end of the box, the uniform length of allthe boxes beingthusinsuredand theproper and accurate placing of the labels on the boxes will be permitted without interference of out ward protuberances which could interfere with the successful operation of a labelingmachine.
My improvements are simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, and are effectual in all respects in the performance of their functions.
Other slight changes than those above mentioned might be made Without departingfrom the spirit of my invention or limiting its scope, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details herein set forth.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A metal box and a cover therefor, one of said parts having a flange disposed in a different plane from the body thereof an extent equal to the thickness of the other part, and said other part having an inwardly-project in g bead against which the end of said flange abuts, whereby the outer face of the box and cover will be in alinement with each other and together present a definite and predetermined length of exterior face for the reception of a label adapted to encircle the whole peripheral wall of the box and cover, the vertical wall of said box and alined cover being unbroken by external protuberances, substantially as set forth.
2. A metal box and a cover therefor, said box having a flange inwardly disposed to an extent equal to the thickness of the flange of the cover whereby said flange of the cover and Wall of thebox will be in alinement, one With I the other, and a bead projecting inwardly from the cover and bearing against said inwardly-disposed flange on the box, the vertical Wall of said box and alined cover being straight and unbroken by external protuberances, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM H. MOORE.
