NTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE APPAREL-COLLAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent N0. 655,272, dated August '7, 1900.
Application filed June 1,1899. Serial No. 718,975 (No model.)
To all whont it may concern:
Be it known that I, WARREN ADAMS PINE, of the village of Lansingburg, county of Bensselaer, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Apparel- Oollars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to apparel-collars and their adaptation to receive an inserted stiffener made of sheet-form material which is flexible and impervious to the action of water or moisture and which can be removed from the collar when the latter is being laundered and again inserted after the latter has been done, it being the object and purpose of my invention to adapt the collar to retain an upright position even while the person wearing it is perspiring freely.
The said invention relates to the construction and combination of parts hereinafter particularly set forth and claimed.
Accompanying this specification to form a part of it there are two sheets of drawings containing six figures illustrating the application of my invention, with the same designation of parts by letter reference used in all of them. Of these illustrations, Figure 1 is a perspective of the collar with the interiorly-arranged stiffener in place Within the collar. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the sheetform stiffener shown as detached from the collar. Fig. 3'is an elevation of the collar shown at Fig. 1 with the stiffener removed and with what is the inner face of the collar when worn shown as facing the view. Fig. 4c is an elevation of the collar and applied stiffener with what is the inside face of the collar when worn shown as facing the View. Fig. 5 shows a part of the inner face of the collar fronting the view and with the tab that is formed on its inner face shown as turned up and the stiffener omitted. Fig. 6 is a section taken on the line 0; 9: of Fig. 3.
The several parts of the collar thus illustrated are designated by letter reference, and the function of the parts is described as follows:
The letter F designates the facing of that part of the collar which forms the outside of the latter when worn, and theletters F designate that part of the collar which forms the inner facing and that which is next to the person of the wearer when worn. The facing F is formed with a continuous border 13, narrower than the facing F and the ends E E.
The letter T designates a tab that is downwardly projected from the top edge of the border B to extend to the bottom edge of the collar, and this tab at its lower end is provided with a buttonhole 0, arranged to be in line with the buttonhole O made through the ply P and facing F.
The letter S designates a stifiener made from celluloid, parchment, or other sheetform material which is flexible and impervious to the action of moisture or water. This stiffener S is arranged on the inner face of the collar, so as to form when applied a part of the latter by having its upper edges inserted beneath the border 13 to extend to the top and bottom of the collar, with the ends of the stiffener inserted beneath the border 13 at the ends E E of the collar, with the cutaway parts of the stiffener indicated at m we, each resting upon one of the seams S connecting the border B at the bottom of each of its ends with the ply P and the outer facing of the collar. This stiifener is cut away at (J for the passage of the button connecting the tab T with the outer facing and the collar with the neckband of the shirt upon which it is worn; The collar has the usual tabs D D, by which the ends of the collar connect with each other and the neckband of the shirt at the front by means of buttonholes 0 formed in each of the tabs D. The stiffener S is cutaway at each of its ends at for the passage of the button-eye, which connects the front ends of the collar with each other and to the neckband of the shirt upon which it is worn. As thus made the collar when soiled may be laundered with the stiffener removed and worn with the stiffener again inserted.
Having thus describedmy invention, what Letters Patwith a border B for the top and ends of the lat{ IOO ter facing, and an interposed stifEenerS of ma- York, this 3d day of March, 1899, and in the terial impervious to moisture, which is cut presence of the two Witnesses whose names are away at m m, these cut-away parts resting on hereto written.
the seams which connect the border aforesaid WARREN ADAMS PINE. 5 to the said outer facing, substantially as and W'itnesses:
for the purpose set forth. W. E. HAGAN, Signed at the Village of Lansingbnrg, New B. O. I-IONY.
