No. 654,842. Patented July 3|, I900. m. J. SASGEN.
WAGON BOX AND HAY RACK LIFTER.
(Application filed Feb. 8, 1898.)
(No Model.)
' UNITED I ST TE PATEN omen MICHAEL J. SASGEN, OF ST. MATTHIAS, MINNESOTA.
WAGON-BOXIAN D HAY-RACK LIFTER.
SEECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 654,842, date July 31, 1906. Application filed Ietmary s, 1898. Serle1No.669,536. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, MICHAEL J. SASGEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Matthias, in the county of Crow Wing and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Box and Hay-Rack Lifters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in wagon-box and hay-rack lifters, and has for its object to provide a simple, easily-con structed, strong, durable, and easily-operated lifter. This object I accomplish in the manner and by the means hereinafter more fully described in detail, and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like reference-letters indicate like parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention with a hay-rack suspended. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of same. Fig. 3 is a detailed view of one end of Windlass.
My invention consists of two posts A and B, set upright in the ground or otherwise secured in an upright position at a suitable distance from each other. Levers O C are pivotally mounted on said posts A and B by means of pointing the tops of the posts A and B or of pins a a, fixed in the tops of said posts A and B, and recesses c c in said levers O G, in which said pointed tops of said posts A and B or said pins :1 a Work, or in any other suitable manner. To the ends of the short arms of the levers O O are fastened, by eyebolts d d or' other suitable means, pieces of chain D D or other suitable material, so that the ends of said chains D D swing free. To the free ends of said chains D D hooks d d, suitable for grappling the ends of a wagon-box or hayrack, are secured. To the other ends of the levers O C ropes c are fastened and lead through pulleys E E, firmly secured in the ground or otherwise immediately under the ends of said levers C G to a Windlass F, the ends of which are journaled on the sides of the posts A and B toward the pulleys E E by.
straps of iron or other suitable material passed around the ends of said Windlass F and secured to said posts A and-B by bolts or other handle G, and in the post A, just above the level of said Windlass F, is a line of holes ff, in which a pin f fits, said pin serving, when desired, to prevent said crank-handle Gr turning backward. V
' The operation of my invention is as follows: The ropes c a being unwound from the Windlass F the hooks d d are made fast to the wagon-box or hay-rack to be lifted, and
then the crank-handle G is turned, winding the ropes c c on the Windlass F and lifting the Wagon-boxer hay-rack'from the runninggear. When a sufficient height is attained, the pin f isins'erted in the proper holefand the wagon -box or hay-rack held suspended until it is desired to lower it.
By my method of pivoting the levers O O on the posts A and B the levers C C can be swung around and the device used for other purposes, such as lifting hogs and dipping them in a caldron of boiling water to enable the bristles to be removed, &c.
Having thus described my inventiomwhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters ,Patent, is-
1. In a hoisting apparatus, uprights having pins on their upper ends, recessed levers pivotally and revolubly mounted on said pins in said recesses and means for operating the same, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. 111 a hoisting apparatus two standards having pins upon their upper ends and levers pivotally mounted on said pins in recesses in said levers, means at one end of said levers for grappling the body to be raised, and at the other end means for raising and lowering said lever, substantially as and for the purpose described.
, 3. A wagon-box and hay-rack lifter consistin g of two posts set in the ground, and having pins set in their upper ends, recessed levers resting upon said pins; pulleys secured to the ground, and a Windlass strapped to said posts, said levers having grappling-hooks on their short ends and ropes extending from their long ends through said pulleys to said Windlass, substantially as and for the purpose described.
4:. A hoisting apparatus consisting of two posts set in the ground, said posts having pins set in their upper ends, recessed levers resting on said pins in said recesses, chains holes in said post and prevent saidcrankprovided with hooks at their ends and secured by eyebolts to the short arms of said levers, pulleys secured in the ground imme 10 said Windlass, and a pin adapted .to enter handle moving backward, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I hereto affix my sig'-' nature inthe presence of twowitnesses.
