Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH PRONOVOST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Holt, in the county of Flathead and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in HoistingMachines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in adjustable hoisting and pulling machines; and the object of the invention is to produce a simple and efficient device of this nature comprising a derrick provided with runners and provided with a sweep and drums of various diameters about which cables are adapted to wind and which are passed'over suitable pulleys on an arm of the derrick.
The invention comprises various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accomp anying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved hoisting and pulling apparatus. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the lower part of the drum, and Fig. 3 is a detail view showing parts in elevation and illustrating means for holding the cable so that it will wind on one or another of the drums.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A A designate the runners of the apparatus, from which rise the standards A, forming a derrick, which is suitably braced, and at the top of said derrick is ournaled a reel B, having hand-bars B extending through apertures therein, whereby the reel may be rotated. Guyropes B are fixed to and adapted to wind about said reel and their other ends adapted to be fastened to any suitable anchorage mechanism whereby the derrick may be held in an upright position. Ratchet-teeth are formed upon said reel and are adapted to be engaged by a pawl b. C C designate crosspieces, which connect the corresponding ends of said runners, and mounted upon said crosspieces is a platform D, underneath which is fastened a beam carrying a plate D, forming a bearing for the lower end of the post E, to which the drums F and G are fixed. The up per end of said post is journaled in suitable bearings in the cross-pieces J and J, which are fastened to the beams I, which are fastened to the derrick and are positioned parallel with said runners. Suitable braces I are fastened at their upper ends to the top of the derrick and also secured to said beams I, one of said braces extending below the beams I and fastened to the lower end of a diagonally-disposed brace P, which carries a series of hooks I", I and I upon one edge thereof. Diagonally-disposed braces I are fastened to the derrick and the runners and at their upper ends are fastened to the braces I, thereby forming means for rigidly holding the various parts of the apparatus. Said drums F and G,
it will be noted, are of different diameters, the latter of which is provided with a platform G, and underneath said platform is an angular-outlined frame having recesses Gr about its circumference, which are adapted to be engaged by a plunger L, which has a longitudinal movement between the pins L,which are fastened at their lower ends to the sweep N and their upper ends to the cross-pieces N thereby affording suitable guides for said plunger as it is moved into or out of one or another of said recesses G Pivotally mounted upon a pin M, carried by a block M, which is fastened to the sweep, is a lever M", which has pivotal link connections l\ 3 with said plunger L. O designates a lever which is pivotally mounted upon a pin 0 and has a brake-shoe O with a concaved flanged edge adapted to engage the periphery of said platform, which is circular in outline. A hook Q is fastened to one end of the sweep, and to which an evener may be connected, whereby a horse or team may be hitched to the sweep. A lever P is pivotally mounted upon the cross-piece J, which connects the two beams I and has a hook P secured to one end thereof and which is adapted to engage a sheave R, which is adapted to be hung upon one or the other of said pins I, I or I, accordingly as it may be desired to have a cable T wind upon one or another of the two drums F and G or the post immediately above the drum F, which also may serve as a drum. Said cable T passes over a sheave T, carried by the swinging arms W, which are IIO pivotally connected to the derrick. If preferred, a swinging boom may be mounted upon the derrick in place of said arms, whereby objects may be lifted from one side and swung laterally, as may be desired.
In operation, the lever and cable being adjusted to wind upon one or the other of the drums by the manipulation of said lever, causing the sheave to hang upon one or the other of said pins upon the inclined support 1 the plunger is thrown into one or the other of the recesses in the lower portion of the drum G, and by causin the drum to rotate the cable may be reeled up and the weight raised. When it is desired to allow the weight to descend, the friction-brake may be applied and the plunger withdrawn from its engaging recess and the object being hoisted and adapted. to engage one or another of said recesses, a friction-brake mechanism, a cable,
a sheave over which the cable passes, and means for supporting said sheave opposite one or the other of the drums, as set forth.
2. An adjustable hoisting and pulling apparatus comprising a derrick, runners upon which the same is mounted, a verticallymounted rotatable post, a series of drums of different diameters fixed to said post, oneof said drums having a series of recesses formed in the periphery of the lower portion thereof, a sweep, a plunger mounted upon the sweep and adapted to engage one or another of said recesses, a friction-brake mechanism, a cable, a sheave over which the cable passes, an inclined sheave-support, pins mounted thereon, one opposite each drum, a sheave adapted to be held upon one or another of said pins, a cable passing through said sheave, a swinging arm mounted upon the derrick, and a sheave carried by said arm over which the cable is adapted to pass, as set forth.
3. An adjustable hoisting and pulling apparatus comprising a derrick, runners upon which the same is mounted, a verticallymounted rotatable post, a series of drums of, different diameters fixed to said post, one of said drums having a series of recesses formed in the periphery of the lower portion thereof, a sweep, a plunger mounted upon the sweep and adapted to engage one or another of said recesses, a friction-brake mechanism, a cable, a sheave over which the cable passes, an inclined sheave-support, pins mounted thereon, one opposite each drum, a sheave adapted to be held upon one or another of said pins, a cable passing through said sheave, a swinging arm mounted upon the derrick, a sheave carried by said arm over which the cable is adapted to pass, and a lever pivotally mounted upon the frame and adapted to swing said sheave from one pin to another upon said support for the sheave, as set forth.
4. An adjustable hoisting and pulling apparatus comprising a derrick, runners upon which the same is mounted, a verticallymounted rotatable post, a series of drums of different diameters fixed to said post, one of said drums having a series of recesses formed in the periphery of the lower portion thereof, a sweep, a plunger mounted upon the sweep and adapted to engage one or another of said recesses, a lever pivotally mounted upon the sweep and having link connection with the plunger, a friction shoe, a pivotal lever mounted upon the sweep and to which said shoe is fastened, an inclined sheave-supporting beam, pins thereon adapted to hold a sheave opposite one or the other of said drums, a cable adapted to wind upon one or the other of said drums, and guided by said sheave, a swinging arm mounted upon the derrick, and a sheave carried by the derrick and over which said cable is adapted to pass, as set forth.
5. An adjustable hoisting and pulling apparatus comprising a derrick, runners upon which the same is mounted, a sweep and drum, a swinging arm upon the derrick, a sheave carried thereby, a cable adapted to wind upon the drum and passing over said sheave upon said arm, a reel j ournaled upon the derrick, guy-ropes adapted to wind upon said reel, and means for rotating the latter, as set forth.
