or PLANO, TEXAS.
WAGON-BYED-HOISTING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 650,341, dated May 22, 1900.
Application filed March 1, 1900. Serial No. 6j 993. (No model.)
To cLZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIS SOUTHERN, a citizen of the United States; residing at Plano, in the county of Collin and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vagon-Bed-Hoisting Apparatus; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which forms a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in devices for hoisting wagonbeds; and it consists in the provision of a rack adapted to be connected to the bed of the wagon, suitable connections being had with said rack, whereby, through the medium of a pivoted lever, said rack and wagon-bed connected thereto may be hoisted and held in a raised position.
More specifically, the invention resides in the provision of a rack comprising a crosspiece having pivoted to its ends curved rods having eyes designed to engage with bolts on the bed of the wagon and an upright support having pulleys over which a rope or chain passes which is connected at one end to said cross-piece and its opposite end fastened to a lever having pivotal connections with one of the uprights of the support and means for raising the free end of the lever and holding the same at its opposite or lowest throw when it is desired to holclthe bed of the wagon in suspension.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain, the same consists, further, in the novel construction, combination, and adaptation of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
My invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, forms part of this application, and in which drawing I have shown a perspective view of my improved device for hoisting wagons.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawing by letter, A designates the base of the apparatus having two vertical upright pieces A, which are connected together at their upper ends by means of cross-pieces B. Between said cross-pieces B a pulley O is journaled, and between the projecting ends of said pieces is a pulley D. A
E is an operating-lever, which has two plates F F secured to one end, and said plates are aperttired to receive the pin G,which is mounted in an aperture in one of said uprights A. To an eye H on said lever is connected one end of the rope or chain J, the opposite end of said chain being fastened to a cross-piece L, preferably at its middle portion. On the upper side of said cross-piece vL are eyes N, through which the curved rods M pass and are held thereby to the cross-piece L. The ends of the curved rods M have eyes M, which are adapted to engage the headed bolts R, secured to the wagon-bed S.
Mounted vertically on the base of the device are the two posts Q and Q, which are perforated, as at q, and between said posts, at their upper ends, is journaled the pulley T.
.The free end of said lever is also adapted to work between the posts Q and Q and held at different locations by means of a pin I, which is passed through registering perforations in said posts Q and Q.
In order to raise the lever when it is desired to lower the wagon-bed-engaging rods, a rope W is provided, which rope passes through an aperture in the handle and extends a suitable distance on opposite sides of the lever, suitable knots W being made in said rope to prevent it slipping through the aperture of the lever. Said rope after passing over the pulley at the upper ends of the two vertical perforated posts extends 'down within convenient reach of the operator. The opposite end of said rope serves as a means of pulling the lever down as in the act of raising the wagon-bed.
To prevent the wagon-bed from swinging when being raised or lowered, I provide a long shanked hook or rod 0 with a hooked end, which is fastened to one of the upright supporting-posts A, said hook being adapted to engage an eye a on the side of the wagonbed and to raise and lower with the latter as the lever is operated.
In adjusting the device to a wagon-bed the ends of said curved rods provided with eyes are caught over the headed ends of the bolts on the opposite edges of said bed, the hook caught into the eye on said bed, and the latter is in readiness to be hoisted. By means of the pin engaging in registering perforations in the upright posts the lever may be held at different heights, as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A wagon-hoisting device, comprising in combination with the upright supportingposts, the cross-pieces mounted thereon the pulleys journaled to the latter, the lever pivoted to one of said upright supports, the two upright posts having a series of perforations therein, and between which posts said lever is guided, the rope passing through the lever and knotted to prevent said rope from slipping through the aperture in the lever, the wagon-bed-engaging rods and bar carrying same, and the rope connecting the latter with said lever, as set forth.
2. In combination with the lever, the upright supports, and cross-pieces with pulleys as described, the curved bars having eyes at their ends, the bar having eyes in which said rods are mounted, the'rope connecting said bar with the lever, and passing over said pulleys, and the hooked rod, designed to engage an eye on the wagon-bed, as shown and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIS SOUTHERN.
