\VILLARD PUTNAM SMITH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TQBACCO HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 654,031, dated Jtily 17, 1900.
Application filed April 3, 1900\ Serial No. 11,342. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLARD PUINAM SMITH,-a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Tobacco-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in holders for tobacco. It is the usual practice to wrap chewing-tobacco in tin-foil or the like, and when so wrapped it becomes dryand practically useless in a very short time.
It is the object of my invention to provide a package or holder that is practically airtight when closed, thus preventing the escape of moisture from the tobacco, and so constructed as to permit of the forcing out of the quantity of tobacco desired for use.
I will describe a tobacco-holder embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indi-' cate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tobaccoholder embodying myinvention with the top cover removed, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
The holder comprises a casing or cylinder 1, having removable covers or closures 2 3 at its opposite ends. Movable in the casing is a disk or plunger 4, upon which the tobacco 0c rests.
In operation upon removing the closures 2 and 3 the disk atmay be moved inward, so as to force the desired quantity of tobacco beyond the end of the holder, as indicated in Fig. 2. After cutting off this exposed portion of the tobacco the covers or closures are to be replaced, thus making the device practically air-tight.
. The disk l has a peripheral flange extending in the direction of its movement while forcing out tobacco, and as the edge of the flange engages closely against the inner surface of the casing it serves as a scraper to keep the interior of the casing clear of small particles of tobacco that might otherwise adhere thereto.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A tobacco-holder, comprising a casing open at both of its ends, a removable cover for each of said ends, and a disk or plunger movable in the casing, the said disk or plunger having a peripheral flange extended in the direction of movement of the plunger for discharging tobacco, the edge of said flange serving as a scraper for the interior of the casing, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLARD PUTNAM SMITH.
