SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 653,921, dated July 17, 1900.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JERYMIAH B. RED- MOND and LYNNLY C. ADAMS, citizens of the United States, residing at Vicksburg, in the county of Warren and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Separable Friction-Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to an improvement in friction-hinges in which the friction between the leaves of the hinge and the pintle is depended upon to retain the movable portion to which the hinge is secured in any desired position,- and has for its object to provide what might be termed a separable fricti0nhanger, whereby the movable member may be detached from its support without unscrewing or detaching any of the parts.
With this object in view the invention con sists in providing that portion of the pintle which projects from the socket with angular sides and a hangewplate with a seat for the angular portion of the pintle and a pivoted securing member adapted to abut against the hanger-plate and retain the pintle in place.
Our invention further consists of certain details of construction, which will be hereinafter fully described, recited in the claim, and illustrated in the drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of a mirror, showing our invention applied. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of a support to which our hanger is secured. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the hanger, the pintle-retaining member being swung at right angles to its normal position; and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of a special form of pintle used in connection with our invention.
Referring now to the several parts by reference-numerals, 5 designates a mirror to which are secured two hinge-leaves 6, having sockets 7 and a friction-plate 8, designed to bear upon the cylindrical portion 9 of the pintle 10, which is held in the socket 7 by the plate, the tension of which is regulated by the screws 11.
The pintle 10 is provided with an extension 12,preferably rectangular in cross-section and which is designed to rest in a seat in the separable hanger. This hanger comprises a plate 14, of suitable width and thickness, having openings, as at 15 and 16, whereby it can be secured to the support, and terminating at its lower end in a curvature or hook 16 forming a seat in which the angular end of the pin tle rests. It will be noticed that the side of the pintle next the plate fits snugly against the same, and to hold and retain the pintle in this position we have provided the pivoted latch or locking member 17, pivotally secured to the plate 14: and held snugly in Fig. 8 the movable member can be lifted out of the seat for the purpose of being cleaned, stored, moved, or for any other reason.
It will thus be seen that We have provided a very simple effective means whereby the desired result can be attained, and while the exact configuration of the several parts has been described we do not limit ourselves thereto, but reserve the right to make such slight changes and alterations as would properly come within the scope of our invention without departing from the spirit thereof.

In a friction-hinge the combination with the pintle thereof, the sides of which are parallel a short distance, of a hanger having a seat in which the end of the pintle is adapted to rest and a pivoted locking member adapted to engage one of the sides of the pintle to prevent its turning, substantially as described.
