To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK W. GREGORY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Danbury, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Dividers, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an improvement in dividers constructed to permit the respective legs to be locked in any desired relative position and including a means for insuring a fine adjustment.
The main object of the present invention is the provision of a pair of dividers including leg adjusting members connected to each other and to the legs to permit locking of the legs in any desired adjustment and to permit fine adjustment without such lockmg.
The invention in its preferred form of details will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved dividers. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the adjusting arm. Fig. 4 is a broken edge view of the main leg of the divider.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawings, the improved dividers comprise a leg 1 pivotally connected in the usual manner at 2 to what I term the arm 3 of the adjusting device. The remaining leg 4: is formed at the upper end with a recess 5 in which the lower portion of the arm 3 is completely housed. Below the pivot the arm 3 is somewhat reduced in width and the back of the leg 4 fits in said reduced portion of the arm. An adjusting screw 6 passing loosely through the leg extension 7 is threaded in the arm 3 and is provided beyond the leg extension with a milled operating head 8 whereby the arm and leg may be separated or brought together by proper manipulation of the screw. A spring 9 is secured at one end to the leg 1 through the medium of a pin or screw 10, the free end of the spring bearing against the free or lower end of the arm 3. The leg 1 is provided with a recess 11 and the arm 3 is provided with a lever 12 Specification of Letters Patent.

pivotally connected thereto about centrally of the arm and preferably curved so that it may project within the recess 11 of the leg 1. The recess 11 opens inwardly of the leg 1 and the side walls thereof are bridged by the pin 13 against which the lever 12 bears, the opposing edge of said lever being engaged by a screw 1 1 threaded through the leg 1 so that the leg and lever may be locked in fixed relation in any position of the lever within the recess.
In operation, the legs initially adjusted to approximately the desired dimension are held in that position by fixing said screw 1 1 to lock the lever 12. The set screw 6 is then operated to secure the fine adjustment and the dividers will remain in such adjusted position.
When closed practically all parts of the adjusting device are concealed by the leg proper and hence little liability of damage through rough handling or the like exists.
-What is claimed is 1. Dividers including legs, an arm pivotally connected to one of said legs, the other leg being recessed to receive the arm, an adjusting screw having threaded connection with said arm passing loosely through said recessed leg to permit adjustment of the recessed leg with relation to the arm, and means for fixing said arm with relation to the pivotally connected leg.
2. Dividers including legs, an arm pivotally connected to one of said legs, the other leg being recessed to receive the arm, an ad justing screw having threaded connection with said arm passing loosely through said recessed leg to permit adjustment of the recessed leg with relation to the arm, a lever projecting from the arm and operating in the recess in the pivotally connected leg, and
a set screw carried by the pivotally connected leg to engage the lever.
