TO ALL WHOh/I I'l MAY CONCERN:
Be it linown that I, EDWARD WHYTE, of Philadelphia, in the county otPhiludelphiiL, und State of Pennsylvania., have invented a. new und useful Improvement in Means for Cooling Liquid while on Draught,- nnd I do hereby declurethat the following is o full, clear, :rnd exact description of the construct-ion und operation of the some, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a. part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
The object of my invention consists in providing better and cheaper means than have heretofore been devised for coolingliquids while on draught, such as ale, beer, cider, wine, and the like. To this end I construct n cylinder, :t cross-section of which is shown by Figure l of the drawings. It is usually about n. foot in diameter and :t foot in length, more or less, corresponding to the ninount of liquid to be drawn. The ends of' snid Cylinder are mode of wood, iron, tin, or other suitable substance, and it is lined throughout with zinc. The sides of said cylinder ure covered-with felt, and bends ot' iron or Wooden hoopsere passed around the same to give protection thereto. I leave an opening in the upper side of this cylinder, as shown at letter A, on Figure 2, and I adjust :t block to said opening covered with felt so as to render the cylinder nearly or ultegether nir-tight when Idesire to do so. The block und felt covering the seme are represented by B on both the figures. I sometimes place n covering of zine on the upper side of this block and telt for the purpose of giving more firmness and stability thereto. In the interior of this cylinder I platee :mother und smaller cylinder, usually made in the form represented by letter C, on iig. 1. In size it mustcorrespond to the size of the main cylinder, preserving about the sai-nie relative proportions thereto :is is shown 0n the drawings. At one end of this small cylinder I attac-h a conducting pipe, marked D, by which it is connected with the barrel or vessel from which the liquid is to be drawn, and at the opposite end thereof I attach u fn-ucet, E. For the purpose 0f cleaning said cylinder I attach e. cop, F, to the end thereof, with a screw, so that it maybe easily teken o' by unscrewing.
My device is operated as follows, namely: I remove the block that lls the opening A, und ill the main cylinder with ice, packing it closely around the smell cylinder C. I sometimes mix charcoal, salt, or saw-dust with the ice to prevent it from melting. I then replace the block and thereby close the opening securely. The liquor passes from the barrel or other vessel through the conducting pipe D into the cylinder C, and is cooled ready to be drawn off through the faucet for use.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
cooler covered with felt, ice-ehmnber as described, opening A, block B, :ind cylinder C, constructed and operating substantially :is speciiied. ms v EDWARD X WHY'IE. Witnesses 1 mark' FRANK M. Pneu, .Iosnrn HEY.
