Be it known that I, ERNEST A. ROEBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Paper Rolls of Pins, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.

My invention relates to the manufacture of paper rolls of pins, and has for its object to provide as a new article of manufacture a conveniently put up and useful roll of pins adapted either for ordinary sale or use, but more especially for employment in a pin-case of my invention forming the subject-matter of my application for Letters Patent of the United States now pending, Serial No. 735,376, filed October 31, 1899.

My present invention consists of a paper roll of pins having the following distinguishing characteristies, viz: The paper is folded into a roll as one continuous roll from end to end and with the pins inserted on the outside of the fold. The consecutive rows of pins are spaced with slightly-varying distances between them in order that they may be folded in the manner mentioned. A thin rod is preferably inserted in that end of the roll at which the folding is begun and which therefore comes in the interior of the roll, and finally the end portion of the roll is left blank-that is, not filled with pins-and is preferably cut or shaped at its extremity to form a lip.

In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure l is a front elevation of such a paper of pins before rolling it. Fig. 2 is a View of the same in perspective, partly rolled up; and Fig. 3 is a rolled-up paper of pins ready for sale or use constructed according to my invention.

The ordinary paper of pins as commonly sold in the trade at present consists of parallel rows or series of pins stuck in the paper, the latter then being folded over the rows of pins, bringing the pins on the inside of the roll, and each half of the whole number of series or rows beginning at each end of the roll have their points toward the center of the roll. My method of preparing the roll of pins is Wholly different therefrom in that the roll is one continuous roll, and, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, the points of the pins in all of the rows or series are toward the rearor foldedin end of the roll, and the free or front end 20 of the roll is left blank for some little distance and so cut or shaped as to supply a lip 21. The space between the several rows, beginning at the rear end, is graduallyincreased in width, so as in folding to bring the rowsparallel to each other and for that purpose to allow for the fold, because, as before stated, the roll is folded with the rows'of pins on the outside, as seen in Fig. 2.

For convenience of use in folding the roll and also for convenience of use of such roll in my improved pin-case described in the pending application I insert a thin rod 10 in each paper or roll of pins near the inner or folded-in end 11 of the roll before folding' it, and such rod not only affords a convenient and useful method of preparing the roll, but when such roll is used in my said pin-case it will avoid the otherwise necessary unfolding of the roll and rewinding of it on the supporting-rod of the apparatus, as said rod in the roll of pins may be used in lieu of the said supporting-rod of the apparatus. The pins are stuck in the paper in rows or series, as shown in the drawings, and in such manner that the central portion or body of the pin onlyis in the paper, as usual, leaving the head and part of the bodyof the pin projecting.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new 1. As a new article of manufacture a paper roll of pins in which the pins are inserted in a series of parallel rows, in the direction of the length of the roll and all pointing in the same direction, said roll being folded to bring the series of rows of pins on the outside of the fold in one continuous series of folds, and having a free end adapted to cover the folded rows of pins, said folded end being shaped or cut to form a lip at its extremity; substantially as described.
