HAROLD RAYMOND WARREN, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO P. R. WAR- nnn oomrnmr, or on'osn'rrs.
EVERETT, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSA- IPAPER BOX.
Application filed April 15, 1921. Serial No. 461,624.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, HAROLD RAYMOND WARREN,a citizen of the United States, re-
siding at Boston, county of Suffolk, State of E Massachusetts, have invented a certain new 7 and useful Improvement in Paper Boxes, of
which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to folded blank boxes and has special reference to that class of boxes which are employed as display containers for articles of merchandise.
The invention has for an object to provide 115 a display boxer-container made from a single blank or sheet of material having a .portion adapted, when the box is set up, to constitute a display card on which may be printed advertising or othermatter having ac reference to the contents of the container.
' Another object of the invention is to provide a display box or container of the character above referred to in which the entire exposed surface of thebox, including the as display face of the display card portion, lies entirely upon one side or face of the blank, so that said blank may be printed on one side only but may, nevertheless, when folded, constitute a box having the desired 30 attractive appearance.
A further object of the .invention is to provide a combined box and display card composed of a single sheet of material which may be stored and shipped in flat form, but
355 which is out in such shape that is may be folded to form the box and to retain said box in set-up form without the use of adhesives, the display card portion being extensible into display position or being fold- 40 ablev into a position within the outline of the box when desired for the purpose of compactness.
The foregoing and other objects of the invention, together with means whereby the same may be carried into efiect, willbest be understood from the following description of one form or embodiment thereof illus-' trated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
50 Fig. 1 is a plan of a blank formed of a single sheet of cardboard or other suitablematerial, ready to be folded into a box embodying the invention. 4
Fig. 2 is a plan and Fig. 3 a perspective view of the box shown in Figure 1, folded and set up.
Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken substantially onthe line H ofFigure 2.
The blank shown in Figure 1 comprises a series of alined panel portions 5, 6, 7, 8.
and 9 constituting the sides and bottom of the folded box, said blank being scored or creased, as shown by the dotted lines, along the dividing lines between said body or panel portions to facilitate the folding. The panel portion has at each end an extension flap divided into two parts 10 and 11 by a crease or score line 12. The panel port1on 6 has at each. end an extension forming a flap 13 which is separated from the adjacent flap 10, 11 by a slit 14:, The panel portion 8 has at each end an extension which is divided by a crease or score line 15 to form the portions 16 and 17. The blank is creased along the dividing lines between the panel portions and the end flapportions so a that the end flap portions can be folded at right angles to the ends of said panel portions. The panelportion 9 is formed with a slit 18 along the folding line 26 between said portion 9 and the portion 8, and extending for a considerable part of the length of said portion 9, but not for the entire length, and is also formed with two slits 19 and '20 extending at right angles to said slit 18 at the ends thereof for a part only of the width of the portion 9. The panel portion 7 is formed with a slit 8O terminatingat its ends at the dividing line between the panel portions 7 and 8, and at points within the ends of said panel portions, said slit being of such a form as to out from the panel portion 7 a display card portion 31 of pleasing configuration.
When the blank is folded into box form, the panel portion 5 forms one vertical side of the box, the'panel portion'6 forms the real bottom of the box, the panel portions 7 and 8 form a double wall for the other vertical side of the box, and the panel portion 9 forms a false bottom'for the box with an intermediate partition formed by turning up" the portion 21, from the panel portion 9, along the crease line 22. The flap portions .at the ends of the panel portions 5, 6 and 8 are bent to form end walls and tuck flaps. In
setting up the box, the panel portions 5- out and 7 are first turned up, along the folding or score lines 23 and 24, respectively parallel with each other and at right angles with the panel portion 6, leaving the end flaps still in extended form. Thenthe panel portion 8 is folded along those portions of the line 25 which lie beyond the ends of the slit 30, turning said panel portion 8 down against the inner face of the panel portion 7 and causing the display card portion 31 to move out of the plane of the panel portion 7 and assume an upright position above the double rear wall formed by the panel portions 7 and 8, said display card portion constituting an extension of the panel portion 8. At substantially the same time, the panel portion 9 is folded along the line 26 at right angles to the vertical wall 7, 8, so as to-lie flat upon the inner face of the bottom 6, and the tongue portion 21 is turned up into vertical position to form a partition along the middle of the bottom of the box. The flap portions 16 are then bent along the crease lines 27 to form the ends of the box, and the portions 17 of said flaps bent along the crease lines 15 to lie against the inner face of the side wall 5. The flap portions 13 are then turned up along the crease-lines 28 into vertical positions outside the flapportions 16. The flap portions 10' are then bent along the crease lines 29 against the outer face of the flap portions 13, and the portions 11 are bent along the crease lines 12 and tucked in between the ends of the double wall formed by the panels 7 and 8, thus locking the box in setup position.
It will thus be seen that the inner panel 7 of the blank forms, when said blank is folded, the outer portion or ply of the rear wall of the completed box, and that the outer panel 8 of the blank forms the inner portion or ply of said wall,'said outer panel 8 being, when the box is set up, folded inwardly over the inner panel 7 and carrying with it the display card portion 31 which is swung rearwardly and upwardly into upright position. Said display card portion 31 is an integral part of the single sheet of material from which the box is formed, being cut from the panel 7 which, when the box is set up, lies at theouter side of the box but at the rear thereof, so as to be .out of sight, thereby enabling the complete combined box and display card or sign to be formed, with a minimum number of panels, from a single sheet without detracting from the appearance of the finished article. It will be also noted that the panels 7 and 8, with which the display card portion 31 is associated, are alined with one another and with the bottom forming panel 6, thereby providing for said display card portion without offsetting, and permitting the blank as a whole, to apw ne proach in form quite closely to a rectangle, so that it may be out economically and with only a negligible waste of stock. Moreover, should it be desired to dispense temporarily with the upwardly extending display card portion 31, for purposes of compactness or otherwise, as in applying a'cover or closure to the box, said display card portion may be folded along the 1111625 into the plane of the panel portion 7 so as to lie within the outline or configuration of the box proper.
It will also be noted that all of the exposed portions of the container when set up, including the front or display face of the display card 31, are on the same side of the unfolded blank, namely, the reverse of that side shown in Figure 1, which forms the interior of the box so that it is necessary to use only a minimum quantity of stockand to coat the same on one side only, the required printing or ornamentation being entirely on. that side, and all portions of the other face of the blank being concealed when the box is set up in display position.
What I claim is:
1. A display box or container made from a single folded blank comprising a plurality of panels and including three alined panels which form the bottom and one wall of the box, said blank having, in connection with one of said last named panels, a portion constituting a display cardadapted, when the box is setup, to project from said wall, the entire exposed surface of said box, including the display face of said display card portion,
being uponthe reverse side of said blank being formed by two adjacent panels, and
said display card portion being cut from one of said last named panels and constituting an extension on the other, the entlre exposed surface of said box, including the displayface of said display card portion, being upon the reverse side of said blank from that forming the inside of thebox. Y
3. A display box or container made from a single folded blank comprising a plurality of panel portions an inner one of which is cut to form .a display card extension of the next adjacent outer panel portion, the outer faces of the sides of said box being formed by the reverse side of said blank from, that forming the inside of the box, and said outer panel portion being folded inwardly over said inner panel portion to bring the reverse side thereof and reverseside of said display card extension forward.
I 4. A display box or container made from a single folded blank comprising a plurality of panel portions and a portion constituting a display card cut from an inner panel portion and adapted, when the box is set up,
to constitute an extension of an outer panelportion. v
5. A. display boxor container made from a single folded'blank comprising a plurality of panel portions, one of the walls of said box'bein'g formed of two of said panel portions the outer one of which is folded inwardly over the inner on the line between them with the fold on the upper edge, saidinner panel portion being out to form a display card portion adapted to constitute an extension of said-inwardly folded panel portion above the same.
6. A display box or container made from a single folded blank andhaving two side walls, two end walls, and a bottom, one of which are bent to form the outer faces of the I ends of the box and terminate in tuck flaps which are inserted in the ends of said pocket to lock the box in set up form.- I
7.. A blankfor a folded blank box or con-- tainerconsisting of a single sheet of material cut and creased to form five panel portions in such manner that one of the intermediate pa nelportions forms the real bottom of the box, one of the portions adjacent to one edge of said bottom. forming portion forms one side of the box, another panel portion immediately adjacent to said bottom portion forms an outer wall-of the'other side of the box, another panel portion adj acent to said outer side wall portion forms an inside faoing for said outer wall, another panel porvtion adjacent to said inside facing member forms an inside or false bottom of'the box,
said outer side wall portion being slit to form a display card portion adapted to constitute an extension of said inside facing portion, said false bottom portion being slit to form a tongue portion adapted to be bent up to form a vertical partition wall, and end H flaps integral with some of said panel portions which form the ends of the box.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature.
nnnon RAYMOND WARREN.
