. COIN BANK AND BLANK FOR MAKING THE SAME Filed March 13, 1943 ATTORNEYS Patented Dec. 28, 1943 COIN BANK AND BLANK FOR MAKING THE SAME Alfred B. Rode, Jr., Darien, Conn.
Application March 13, 1943, Serial No. 478,993
4 Claims.
My invention relates to a novel coin bank and to a new and improved blank for making the same.
One of the objects Of my invention is to provide a novel coin bank, which can be made by cutting a single blank of paper and providing said blank with hinge lines so that the container will be very simple to manufacture and assemble.
Another object of my invention is to provide a new and improved blank which can be set up and interlocked to form a secure coin bank, no adhesive whatever being required to assemble the same.
Another object of my invention is to provide an improved container having simple locking means for efliciently and permanently locking the same, thus making the said container especially suitable for holding coins.
Another object of the invention is to provide a coin bank which can be shipped in extensible flat form and which can be readily set up.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved coin bank having reinforced walls.
Still another object of my invention is to provide a novel container and blank for forming the same, which will substantially simulate a savings bank.
Other objects of my invention will be stated in the annexed description and drawing which illustrate a preferred embodiment thereof.
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the blank which is employed for making the coin bank.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the set-up container.
Fig. 3 is a section view along the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view along the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view showing a part of the bottom of the container broken away.
Blank B, illustrated in Fig. 1, is made of a single piece of paper, cardboard, or the like. It comprises a top wall Ii), a front wall H, a rear wall iii, a bottom wall M, and end walls l5 and Hi. Top wall H3 is divided into two equal sections by the central longitudinal hinge line 23. A vertical coin opening 25 is provided in top wall ill, the said opening being perpendicular to and bisecting hinge line 26, the upper and lower ends of said opening being equi-distant from said hinge line.
Top wall H) is integral with the bottom longitudinal edge of front wall I! and the top longitudinal edge of rear wall it. Said front wall is hingedly connected to the said longitudinal edges of front wall II and rear wall l3 by suitable hinge lines 21. Bottom wall 14 is integral with the bottom longitudinal edge of rear wall !3 and with the longitudinal edges of end walls l5 and I6, said wall I l being hingedly connected at the said points by suitable hinge lines 23. Front wall I l is integral with the top longitudinal edge of top wall l0 and is hingedly connected thereto by hinge line 27. Rear wall i3 is integral with the bottom longitudinal edge of top wall It and is hingedly connected thereto by hinge line 21. Said rear wall I3 is also integral with the top longitudinal edge of bottom wall I l and is hingedly connected thereto by longitudinal hinge line 28.
End walls l5 and I6 are identical and each has a median portion which is wider than the end portions thereof, the outer side edges 30 of said walls therefore being angular in shape with the apex at the median point. The said end walls l5 and I6 are provided with'upper flaps I1 and lower flaps l8 which are hingedly connected to said walls by means of suitable hinge lines 29. The upper angular wall 30 of each end wall l5 and i6 is provided with a flap I9 which is hingedly connected to the said end walls by hinge lines 30a. It will be noted that the lower angular wall 30 of each of end walls l5 and i6 is free and has no flaps extending therefrom. Each of flaps H] are provided with the supplemental flaps 2B and 2| and are hingedly connected thereto by suitable hinge lines 3! and 32 respectively. Flap 2! is wider at its lower portion than its upper portion and in the present embodiment is in the shape of ahat, although it may be of any desired ornamental shape. The dimension of the widest portion of flap 2| is smaller than the dimension of opening 25 in front wall [0.
Bottom wall i4 is provided with the longitudinal flap 22 at its lower longitudinal edge, the said flap being hingedly connectedtherete by hinge line 33. Bottom wall I4 is also provided with the longitudinal opening 24 at substantially about its median point.
Front wall H is provided with an extension l2 and is hingedly connected thereto at its upper longitudinal edge by hinge line 34. The dimension of extension I2 is substantially equal to or is slightly smaller than the dimension of opening 24 in bottom wall M. The said extension 12 is provided with the lateral ears 23 adjacent its upper edge, the said members 23 being hingedly connected to said extension by hinge lines 35;
as shown in Fig. 5.
I lygonal contour.
35 can be formed by indenting or scoring blank B along the said lines.
In order to set up the container from blank B, flaps I! and I8, flaps IE and flap 22 are bent upwardly along hinge line 29, 30a and 33 respectively. Flaps 2i ar then bent outwardly along lines 32 until they are at right angles to flaps I9. End Walls I5 and I6 are then bent inwardly along lines 28 until the inner faces of flaps 2| abut each other. In this position, flaps 20 are then bent downwardl along hinge lines 3|, until the outer side edges thereof abut and rest upon free edge 30 of end walls I 5 and I6.
Rear wall I3 is then bent upwardly along line 28 until the inner face thereof abuts the outer faces of'flaps Il. Top wall I is now bent along hinge lines 26 and 21 so that the inner face thereof will abut the outer faces of flaps I9 and 26. In performing this step, the free ends of flaps 2| are inserted through the opening in said top wall.
The two sections of top wall I0 when bent downwardly relative to each other along hinge line. 26 will rest upon the angular side edges 30 of end walls I and Ill. The two sections of top wall I0 and the two halves of opening 25 will thereforebe angularly disposed towards each other with hinge line 26 as the apex. The apex of each of said end walls I5 and I 6 will thus be positioned directly below the outer ends of hinge lines 3| and 26.
Front wall II is then bent downwardly along line 21 until its inner face abuts the outer faces of flaps I8 and 22. Extension I2 is then bent inwardly until it abuts the outer face of bottom wall I4. Ears 23 are bent inwardly and the free end of said extension I2 with inwardly bent ears 23 are inserted through opening 24 in bottom wall I4. Once within the container, ears 23 will spring back to their original outwardly extending position, thus securely locking the container In this position, the free end of extension I2 cannot be removed from opening 24 because of the projecting ears 23. Once the container is so locked it cannot be opened save by destroying the same. This permanent locking feature makes the container especially suitable and desirable as a coin bank.
As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the top and bottom walls of the final container are reinforced as they are formed of a plurality of members. The top wall I0 is reinforced by flaps I 9 and 2d and the bottom Wall by extension I2.
It will be noted from Fig. v2 that when the container is set up, flaps ZI will be positioned above only one of the half sections of top wall I0, that is, the half section of said top wall III, the inner face of which abuts the outer faces of flaps I9. The wider lower portion of said flaps 2I therefore extend beyond the half-0f opening 25 located in said half section of top wall Id. In this manner, flaps 2| are prevented from slipping into the container through opening 25. The coins are inserted through th inner faces of flaps 2|. 7
Top wall Ill, front wall II, extension l2, rear wall I3, bottom wall It and flaps 20 are of rectangular shape. Flaps I9 are of trapezoidal shape. End Walls I5 and I5 are of pointed po- Front wall II and rear wall I3 are substantially identicalin shape and in dimension. Flaps ll, 3,19, 26, 2-! and cars 23 are substantially identical in shape and in dimension. Top wall I (l and bottom wall I4 are substantially identical in shape.
I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, but numerous omissions and changes may be made without departing from its spirit.
