INVENTOR OliverBenso 71 BY Mo ATTORNEYS NITED STATES PATENT OFFIC OLIVER BENSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 653,059, dated July 3, 1900. Application filed December 29, 1899:. $erial No. 741,965- (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER BENSON, a sub jeot of the King of Sweden and Norway, residing in the borough of Manhattan, in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tops,
of which the following is a specification.
By means of this invention the article can be used not only as a top, but also as a whistle and as a squirt or sprinkler, as set forth in the following specification and claims and illus trated in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is an elevation of the top. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows the valve closed. Fig. at shows the valve open.
A hollow body is shown at A. This body is formed of an elastic or rubber ball, and through oppositely-located apertures or perforations is passed a stem 7). This stem is hollow or tubular and has a whistle-aperture at c and also apertures at d. The stem is longitudinally movable or adjustable in the body or could be entirely withdrawn from the body it the latter is to be used, say, for playing ball. The stem is shown with notches or shoulders for engaging the body or the edges of the apertures and prevent accidental sliding or displacement of the stem. Two sets of notches are shown at e and f. Say the notches 6 engagethebodya. Thenon thelatterbeingcompressed air passing from the body through an aperture 61 and out at 0 will create a sound or whistle. The ends of the stem can be suitably plugged or closed. A plug at one end is shown constituting a penholder g, which when withdrawn and replaced in reverse position will hold the pen or pencil exposed, so that the stem 1) can be used for writing or marking. At the other 'end of the stem is a disk or mouthpiece i, forming a squirt-opening or having suitable passages or perforations. A disk or valve 70 is correspondingly perforated. By rotating the valve In so that its unperforated parts cover the openings in piece 11 the corresponding end of stem 1) is closed. Suitably rotating or setting the valve 70 will open the stem. The stem can be moved longitudinally either to carry the whistleopening a into the body or to carry the aperture d next to the whistle out of the body, leaving the other or lower aperture d alone in the body, the two apertures being separated by partitionl. This latter position is attained by having shoulders f engage the body. The valve being open and the body compressed, air is expelled, and the valve being then held in water or liquid and the body allowed to expand such body will be charged ;with liquid, which can thus be sprayed or ejected through the valve on again com pressing the body.
Only one aperture d could be employed and partition Z omitted and the aperture 0 pushed into the body a when it is desired to squirt; but two partitioned apertures cl are thought preferable, as thereby water or moisture from the body can be prevented from passing to the pen or plug g.
The valve 7c can serve as the foot for the top when spinning.
In case the stem is pushed downwardto carry the interior shoulder f to engage the body edge lying at point 70, an additional [shoulder f can be arranged to engage that edge of the body shown in Fig. 2 as lying nearer partition Z.
What I claim asnew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A hollow elastic body having a tubular stem extended entirely through said body and projecting therefrom atboth ends, to provide at one end of said stem a bearing-point for use of the device as a top, and having a whistle-aperture in the other projecting end of said tubular stem, substantially as described.
2. A hollow elastic body having a tubular stem provided with a whistle-aperture, said stem being longitudinally adjustable in and removable from the body and extended entirely through said body toprovide abearingpoint for use of the device as a top, substantially as described.
3. A hollow elastic body having a tubular stem provided with a whistle, said stem having notches for engaging the body and being extended entirely through said body to pro-' vide a bearing-point for use of the device as a top, substantially as described.
4. A hollow elastic body having a tubular stem provided with a mouth or squirt-opening, and a valve for closing said mouth, said stem being extended entirely through said body to provide a bearing-point for use of the device as a top, substantially as described.
5. A top comprising a hollow body having a removable tubular stem extended entirely through said body and provided with a series of notches to adjustably engage the edges of said body, substantially as described.
6. A hollow elastic body having a tubular stern provided with a series of notches to adjustably engage the edges of said body, said stem being extended entirely through said body to provide a bearing-point for use of the device as a top and having an inlet-opening within said body, a whistle-aperture in one projecting portion of the stem, and a valved squirt-opening or mouth at the other end, whereby the stem may be longitudinally ad j usted in said body to serve as a whistle or as a squirt, substantially as described.
7. A tubular elastic body having a longitudinally-adj ustable tubular stem extended entirely through said body and projecting therefrom at both ends, to provide at one end of said stem a bearing-point for use of the device as a top, one projecting end of said tubular stem being provided with a whist1e-aperture and the other end having a squirtopening and a valve to control said squirtopening, substantially as described.
8. A hollow elastic body having a tubular stem provided with a whistle c, a partition I in said stem, apertures d at opposite sides of said partition, shoulders e and f for holding the stem in adjusted position with one of the apertures cl respectively in and outside the body, said stem being extended entirely through said body to provide a bearing-point for use of the device as a top and having in one end a squirt or mouthpiece'i and a valve for closing the squirt, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
. OLIVER BENSON.
