UNTTED STATES PATENT GFTICE.
WVILLIAM H. PAYNE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOE, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO ADELINE E. HOSKINS, OF SAME PLACE.
POCKET POWDER-PUFF AND INHALER DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 478,358, dated July 5, 1892.
Application filed February 16, 1892. Serial No. 421,722. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIA H. PAYNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Pocket Powder-Puffs and Inhaling Devices, of which the following is a specification.
Theprincipal.objec'tof mypresentinvention is to provide a compact, neat, and comparatively inexpensive article or device adapted for use both as a smellinggbgllfiygmgaler and as a powle and piiff and of such general construction and arrangement as to permit of the closing up of the same when not in use, so as to be carried either in the hand or in the pocket.
My invention consists of theimprovements hereinafter described and claimed.
The general characteristic features of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation of a pocket device or article embodying features of my invention and showing the parts thereof arranged in closed position for permitting the device to be carried in the hand or in the pocket. Fig. 2 is a central section of Fig. 1,showing the construction and arrangement of the internal parts of the device. Fig. 3 is an elevation showing the device arranged for use as a powder-box and puff, and Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the device arranged for use as asmelling-tube or inhaling device.
In the drawings, a is the body portion of the pocket device or article. This body a is preferably cylindrical in form and is provided with an expanded extremity a, a contracted extremity a and a transverselyranging partition a intermediate of the respective extremities. This partition a divides the inte rior of the body a into two compartments 1) and c for a purpose to be presently described.
(1 is a powder-puff comprising a socket d, adapted for the reception of a pad or puff d and provided with an acorn or other preferred form of handle (1 The expanded portion a of the body a is adapted for the reception of the puff or pad 01 and the extremity of this expanded portion is provided with a lip 19', which engages with the cheeks d of the powder-puff cl and forms a tight joint, so that the powder-puff d is detachably connected with the expanded extremity of the body a and is adapted to tightly close the open end of the compartment 17.
e is a nozzle fitted into the contracted extremity a of the body a and provided with a perforated diaphragm e, which serves to retain a mass of sponge or other absorbent material e to place in the compartment 0.
c are a series" of radial apertures formed in the contracted portion or of the body a and communicating with the interior of the compartment 0, so that the latter and its accessories constitute an effective smelling-tube or inhaling device.
f is a detachable cap adapted to be fitted onto and over the contracted extremity a of the body C6, in order to close the apertures c and cover the nozzle e.
In use the chamber 1) is partially filled with powder, and the sponge or other absorbent material 6 is saturated with a suitable mixture. If preferred, the sponge (2 may be dispensed with and smelling-salts maybe intro duced into the chamber 0 by removing the nozzle 6. The device may be used as a powder-puff by permitting the capf to close the contracted end a of the body a, Fig. 3, and then using the powder-puff (Z, in connection with the supply of powder in the chamber 12, in the usual or in any other preferred manner, and the device may be used as an inhaling device or smelling-tube by returning the powder-puff d to its normal position in the chamber 11 and then removing the capf, Fig. 4, in order to permit of the application of the nozzlef to the nostrils in the usual or in any other preferred manner, it being understood that the apertures c serve to admit air, which, after traversing the contents of the chamber 0, is inhaled by the user. Moreover, the perforated diaphragm 6 serves to retain the contents of the chamber 0, without in any wise interfering with the operation of the inhaling device or smelling-tube.
By fitting the cap fand puif d to place in the respective extremities of the body a, Fig.
panded extremity, a nozzle adapted for insertion into said contracted extremity, and a detachable cap adapted to be fitted over said nozzle and onto said contracted extremity, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature in the presence of two subscribing 20 witnesses.
\VILLIAM H. PAYNE.
