I ATENT @rrrcn.
SIMON BROM, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 769,935, dated September 13, 1904.
Application filed March 29, 1904.
T 0 It whom, it 777/607] concern:
Be it known that I, SIMON BROM, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, Kings county, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates toimprovements in toys; and the same has for its object more particularly to provide a neat, durable, and efiicient support for artificial flowers and other objects, which support may at the same time serve as a receptacle or holder in which movable objects may be supported and arranged to operate.
To these ends my invention consists in the novel details of construction and in the combination, connection, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and then pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a side view of a holder made according to and embodying my invention, said holder being shown in the hand of the operator with its movable object projected. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the holder with the movable object retracted; and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the holder detached, comprising the receptacle portion and stem.
In said drawings, 10 designates the holding device, consisting of a funnel-shaped inner receptacle 11, made of cardboard or analogous material and provided at its lower or small end with a tubular stem 12, made of similar material, having its upper end provided with a plurality of longitudinal slits at 13 13,
whereby to form the tongues or attaching members I L 14:, which are secured by gluing or other suitable means to the small end of the receptacle 11 and form a support therefor. Within the tubular stem 12 is firmly secured a metal reinforcing-tube 15, which is substantially coextensive in length with said tubular stem 12 and provided at its lower edge with a laterally-projecting flange 16, and within said metal tube 15 is movably dis- Serial No. 200,519. (No model.)
posed a rod or solid stem 17, which extends beyond the ends of said metal tube 15 and through and above the funnel-shaped receptacle 11.
18 denotes a button secured upon the-lower projecting end of said rod 17, and 19a coilspring arranged upon and surrounding the portion of the rod 17 within the funnel-shaped receptacle 11, said spring having one end secured to the rod 17 and its other end secured to the upper end of the metal tube 15. Upon the upper end of the rod 17 which is herein shown screw-threaded, is secured an ornamental top or head 20, which may be made in any desirable shape or form, and 21 denotes a flexible or pliable connection, preferably a cylindrical or conical section, havingv its upper edge secured to the lower portion of the head 20 and its lower edge secured to the upper edge of the funnel-shaped receptacle 11, whereby to hide the interior construction of the apparatus and also to limit the-upward movement of the head element 20.
22 denotes an inclosing ornamental portion, which is herein shown as an artificial flower in the shape of a rose, having a hollow center portion and secured at its lower edge to the outer surface of the receptacle 11.
The head element 20 is normally held concealed within the ornamental inclosing section 22 by the action of the spring 19 and may be projected beyond the plane of the top of said ornamental inclosing section by pressure upon the button 18 of rod 17.
Without limiting myself to the precise details of construction, which may be varied with the scope of the invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A device of the character specified consisting of a holder comprising an inner receptacle, a hollow stem depending therefrom, a tubular reinforcement secured Within said hollow stem, a rod disposed within said tubular reinforcement, a coil-spring disposed upon said rod adapted to maintain the upper end thereof normally retracted, a head or top securedupon the upper end of said rod, a pliable tubular connecting-section secured at its upper portion to said head or top, and at its lower portion to the inner receptacle, and
means secured to said inner receptacle for inclosing the same and the head or top, substantially as specified.
2. A device of the character specified consisting of a receptacle, a hollow stem having a plurality of tongues or members at its upper end adapted for securement to said receptacle, a tubular reinforcement secured within said hollow stem, a flange at the lower edge of said tubular reinforcement, a rod working Within said tubular reinforcement and extending beyond the ends thereof and into the receptacle, a button-at the lower end of said rod, a spring arranged upon said rod-adjacent to its upper end having one end secured to said rod, and its other end secured to said tubular reinforcement, a top or head secured upon the upper end of said rod, a pliable, cylindrical connecting-section surrounding said rod and having one edge secured to said top per edge of'the receptacle, and an inclosing section adapted for securement to-the outer side of said receptacle for normally concealing the same and the head or top aforesaid, substantially as specified.
Signed at the city of New York, county and State of New York, this 26th day' of March, 1904.
SIMON BROM.
