PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY AQMARSTON, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
SAND TOY.
Application filed April 12, 1921. Serial No. 460,739.
the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The invention has relation to toys, and particularly to sand toys or those for writing or designing or outlining a figure or symbol by a thin stream of sand, the Ol)]80l being to provide an improved pencil for this purpose.
The invention consists in the novel c0nstruction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, Figure 1 shows a perspective view of the pencil, and Figure 2 1s a detail sectional view, showing opened position of valve in dotted lines. I
In these drawings, the numeral 3 designates the pencil which is adapted to discharge at will a thin stream of sand upon a card or other background, as the hand of the user is guided thereover in outlining the figure or design that the artist may wish to express, the discharge end of the pencil being cone shaped at 4, and a valve lever 5 being fulcruined to said end of the pencil at 6 and having its lower end normally covering the discharge opening at theend of said cone, the other end portion of said lever projecting in position to be readily operated to open the valve by the middle finger of the hand of the user as the pencil is grasped between the finger and thumb of the hand as pencils are usually held. The upper end of the pencil has a hinged cover 10, whlch is thrown backwardly or raised when the sand is to be returned thereto.
The lower end of the valve lever terminates ad acent to and is adapted to assume an opened position out of line with the longitudinal axis of the pencil body and out of the path of sand issuing from the outlet opening in an upright position of the pencil.
The mvention is useful in instructing backwardehildren and those not studious, owing to its amusing nature, which adapts 1t also for the instruction of normal children. Sand or other similar material may be used.
'I claim:
A sand pencil, having a hollow elongated body provided with a cone shaped end havmg an outlet opening the peripheral wall of which is in a plane inclined to the longitudinal axis of said body of the pencil, and avalve lever fulcrumed to said body and having a lower end normally closing and terminating adjacent to said outlet opening and also inclined relative to said axis and adapted to assume an opened position out of llne with said axis and out of the path of sand issuing from said outlet opening.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature 1n presence of two witnesses.
H. A. MARSTON.
