IMPROVED APPARATUS FOR REMOVIN G WATER FROM THE HOLDS OF VESSELS.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that l, H. L. STIBBS, of Savannah, in the county of Chatham, and State of Georgia, have invented a new and improved Apparatus for Removing Water automatically from the Holds of Vessels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to malic and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of my improved apparatus taken through the line g/ y, fig-.12.
Figure 2 is a vertical cross-section of the saine taken through the line z fc, fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
My invention has for its obiect to furnish an improved apparatus by means of which water may be removed from the holds of vessels automatically; and it consists in the combination ofthe horizontal pipe, bent outlet pipe, and cone'shaped bottoinless cup with each other, and in the combination therewith of the cranks and shaft for adjusting it, the whole being constructed and arranged :1s-hereinafter more fully described.
A represents a portion of a vessels bottoni through which a hole is cut-into the hold of the vessel. This hole or opening is coveredupon the inside with a cap, B, of suiiicient capacity to receive the operating part of the apparatus. C is a pipe extending through the 'side ofthe cap B into the hold of the vessel, the inner end of which is covered witha screen, to prevent substances that may he iloating in the hold of the vessel from being drawn into the pipe C. D is a benit pipe, upon the upper end of which is forinechor to it is attached, a sleeve, CZ', fitting and working upon the end of the pipe C, where it is secured in place by a cap or screw screwing upon or into the end of the pipe C. Through the under side of the outer end of the pipe C is formed a hole which, when the pipe hangs downward, corresponds with the bore of the pipe D, so that the water may have a free course through the pipes. When the pipe D is turned up into the cap B, the hole through the side of the pipe C will be covered with the sleeve d, preventing the passage ot' the water. To the outer end of the' bent pipe D is attached 'a cone-shaped bottomlcss cup, E, the larger end being towards the bow of the vessel. To the end of the pipe D, or cup E, is attached the end of the crank-arm, F, the other end of which is attached to the end of the short shaft G that passes through the side of the cap B, and has a crank-arm, H, attached to its other end, so that the out-er end of the pipe D may be conveniently raised and lowered when desired. I is a valve placed in the pipe C, which, when closed, prevents the passage of water in either direction through the' pipe C. When it isv desired to remove water from the hold ofthe vessel, the pipe D is lowered into the position shown in the drawings. The advance of the vessel, and the cone shape of the bottomless cup E, cause astrong current to flow out of the stern or smaller end of said cup, the tendency of which is to form a vacuum at the end of the pipe D, to supply which the water flows from the hold of the vessel out through the pipes C and D.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the horizontal pipe C, bent outlet pipe D, and conc-shaped bottoniless cup E, with each other, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the shaft G and crank-arms F and H, with the pipe D and bottomless cup E, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 11th day of April, 1867.
H. L. STIBBS.
