UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WVILLIAM J. SCOTT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
STOCK-WATERER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 614,238, dated November 15, 1898.
Application filed March 23,1898. Serial No. 674,905. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM J. Soon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illi nois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stock-Waterers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of, the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has reference to improvements in stock-waterers of that class in which the water flows automatically into the watering-trough provided.
The object of my invention is to produce a waterer which is of simple construction and can be manufactured at a moderate cost, thereby placing it within the reach of every owner of stock. I accomplish this object in the manner and' by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a vertical section of my waterer. Fig. 2 is a sectional detail of the closing mechanism at the top of Fig. 1.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in both views.
A represents the reservoir of my Waterer, which may consist of a barrel, a tank, or any water tight receptacle suitably furnished with the closely-fitted top B. The top B is provided with an opening H, into which is tightly fitted the casting D.
The casting D consists of the internallythreaded socket E, having a horizontal annular flange F, provided around its periphery with a vertical flange or rim G. The flange F is provided with holes F for the passage of screws to secure it to the top B.
A screw-plug C is employed for closing the opening in the casting D and is provided with handles K, suitably fastened to its top. By means of the handles K an extra amount of leverage can be exerted in screwing the plug C into the opening of casting D, making said opening air-tight. An elastic plug or stopper may be employed in place of the screw-plug C, or the present construction maybe suitably provided with a rubber packing.
The vertical rim G upon the casting D adapts the latter to act as a funnel when the reservoir is to be filled and is of suflicient height for that purpose.
At the bottom of the reservoirAis a threaded opening L, into which is screwed one end of the pipe or tubeM, the other end of which is similarly held in the opening L of the watering tank or trough N. Any suitable means maybe employed to make the connections at L and L water and air tight.
The tube or pipe M is provided with a valve 0, by means of which the water may be prevented from passing through the said pipe when the reservoir is being filled or at any time when the owner may desire to stop the flow. The reservoir being filled entirely full and the plug C screwed or pressed into the socket of the casting D, the reservoir A becomes air-tight, and when the valve 0 is opened and the water allowed to pass down through pipe M into trough N it will fill the latter until the discharge-opening L is submerged, whereupon the flow will cease. Whenever the stock drink enough of the water in the said tank to uncover the opening L, the water will begin to flow again and continue until the opening L is again submerged.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, isv In a stock-waterer, the combination of the reservoir A provided with the casting D, having interior threaded socket E, annular flange 'F and rim G, a plug or stopper C having exterior threads J and handles K by means of which an air-tight closing may be made, the pipe M and the tank N suitably connected therewith, substantially as shown and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM J. SCOTT.
