Description

W. SHRIVER. EEEE RVOIR DAMPING BRUSH.
Patented May 28, 1867 nitnh tatzs 'atnnf: ffintn.,
VVALTER SHRIVER, OF NE.W Y.RK-, N. Y;
' Lettera Patent No. 65,290, datec May 28, 1867.
RESERVIB DAMIING-BRUSE TO WHOM IT MAY CQNCERN:
Be it lmoivn that I, WALIR SIIRIVER, of the city of New York', county ofv New York, and State of New York, have invented a. new and improved Resorvoir Damping-Brush for wetting paper in the opemtion of copy ing letters; and I.do hereby declare thut the following is a full andoxact. description thereof, referenc being hnd t.o the nccompanying drawings, and o the Ie;ters of reference mnrked t hereon, in which- Figure 1 is 'a. verticuilbngifudinal section; and
Figure 2 a vertical cross-section of the saine.
The nuturc of my invention in to provid the ordinnry brush for dumping pape! with a suitable reservoir or fquntnin within the handle to contain a.-Supply of water, finis doing a,wa'with the inconvenience of a sepm'ate vesselfor containing the water; liability to evaporation, deteriomtion fro n dust, &e.
To ena-ble others skilld in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to 1escrib ts construction and oprntin.
A represents a Snitable fiat brush, composed of the usal materinl, secnred to tfi .ciamp-head C, -w hibh is kept. in its position by the suppontsg g. The handle B is manie hollowioi sheet metal,'zxnd of su ificient ca,pacity to contain a suitable supply of water. -It is of a. fiat on oval form, iu.crBss-section, with an enl arg(-portion ait;
6 b, in; scen in the drmings, but having the lips or lower edge s contrnetedt h7z, so as to form a...naliroy slt snficiently close to give proper compression to the hnir of the brush, ais heroaf'ter' described.- The hnndle ismnde otherwise water-tight, being entirely closedai. the upper and, excpt;nsmall opening a.t E, provided witli an inner opening alve, F, whichhas a. steiflprojecting through the opening E and tefnfinning in a. button, a; by which it mzy be operated, a.t snob finies us may be necessnry, for the admission of -air, by simple pressre from without. This valve is retnin ed in'a normally closod pstion by tile actio'n of'the springf. Anbpening is also provided a.t D for the purpose of introducing the water into the i-eservoir, which opening D is providd w-ith a screw-cap, 6! other suituble fastoning, no rer idcr it waher-tigh fi. 7
The hait of the bnush A having been prdperly secnred by the clnmp-head C, is insrtcd within the handle B in snob a manner that the iips h 1; shall beur upqn and cbmpre ss (:he hiiil 0.1; a. snitabie point betiven the oter ends of the hui! and the clamp-hem! C, and with jusb sufiicient fora to permit the water t6 flow out by czi.pillary attralction when tiie brush is being nsed fofflamping paper, nnd the aperture :11: E is opened to ndinit the 'nedessary mnonnt of air. The hair of the brush is held fininiy in position by the Supports 9 q', which are securedht one end to thoclamp-head, and a: the ohf to the inner sides of the handle, M; 01' near the angle of enlargement, as seen in the figures.
A ring, G, for hanging np the briisin when not in n-sc, is a1sbprovided; its position with referehco to the centre of -gruvity of the handle being snob th{lt the brush wili aiw.ys bang with the reseryoir downward, and thus prevnt any ea.l;ing and dripping from the brush when hnng p.
Having now described my invention, what I daim as new, and desire to secur e by Letters Patent, is-' As a. new article of manufacture, a) resrvoir damping-brush for wetting pnper for copying ltters, artanged nndconstructed subStantinliy us and for thqpnrpose described.
WALTER SHRIVER.
