NITED. STATES EBEN M. SCOTT, OF BRIDGEPCRT, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE WARNER BROTHERS COMPANY, OF-SAME PLACE.
KNOCKDOWN PAPER-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 652,812, dated July 3, 1900.
Application filed Maren 21, 1900. Serial No. 9,540. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
. Be it known that I, EBEN M. SCOTT, a citizen of the United-States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Knockdown Paper Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in that class of knockdown paper boxes which are set up and secured together without pasting or other means than that afforded by the peculiar form of blank from which the box is folded.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal cross-section of a box embodying my invention, one end being partly broken away in order to show the arrangement of parts more clearly. Fig. 2 is an interior end view of the box, showing the arrangement of parts; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of a blank from which the box is made, showing the method of cutting and scoring. In Fig. 3 single lines indicate where the blank is cut and shaded lines where the same is scored or creased for folding.-
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
a indicates the bottom of the box, 19 b the sides, a o the outside end pieces, having extensions e 6, with tongues ff, the end pieces being turned up against the turned-in upright flaps d d. The extensions 6 e pass over flaps cl d and wings d d down into the box, where the tongues ff engage wings d 0?, thus securing firmly the end of the box. The wings d are extensions of flaps cl and are adapted to be turned back down onto flaps d in such manner that when the flaps are turned upward and inward each wing will be close against its flap in position to engage the tongue f.
In setting up the box the wings d are turned over and down onto flaps d. The sides I) are then turned up at right angles to the bottom a and the flaps (I turned in at right angles to the sides. The end 0 is then turned up against the flaps d and the extension 6 turned over the same and down onto the box, where the tongues f f pass behind and engage with wings d d. Fig. 2 clearly shows the arrangement and adaptation of the parts described, the vertical dotted lines outlining the Wings (1 d where covered by extension e and the circular dotted lines the tongues f f where covered by wings d d.
The cover of the box is made in like manner and of corresponding size to the body hereinbefore described.
My invention may be usedat only one end of a box or cover, the other end being unsecured or secured in some other way.
It is obvious that but one wing-pieceand but one tongue to engage therewith would hold the parts together, but the form I have described is preferable, as giving better results and making a stronger box.- The extension 6 and the tongues f f may be of different form or shape, but are within the scope of my invention in so far as they confine the end pieces 01 and engage the wings d.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. A box or cover for a box having an upright turned-in portion provided with a wing adapted to be turned back down onto the same, an end piece adapted to fold over the upper edge of the turned-in portion and provided with means for engaging the wing, substantially as described.
2. A box or cover for a box having upright turned-in portions provided with a wing or wings adapted to be turned back down onto the same, an end piece adapted to fold over the upper edges of the turned-in portions and provided with an extension having means for engaging the wing or wings, substantially as described.
3. A box or cover fora box having upright turned-in portions provided with a wing or wings adapted to be turned back down onto the same, an end piece adapted to fold over the upper edges of the turned-in portions and provided with means for engaging the wing or wings, substantially as described.
e. A box or cover for a box having upright turned-in portions (1, (1 provided with Wings d, d and an end piece 0 having an extension 6 and means f, f for engaging the wings when the end piece is folded over the upright turned-in portions, substantially as described. 10
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two witnesses. EBEN M. SCOTT.
Witnesses:
F. S. ANDREWS, M. M. WHEATON.
