TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Bc it known that Tvc, ADOLPIIUS HOWARD, of Wellsville, county of Allegany, and State of Nerv York, and GEORGE F. HOWARD, of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and improved Machine for Washing Leather after having laeciiieinowcd from the vats; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to thaceompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, tvc will-proceed to vdescribe/its construction and operation.
Figure I is a sectional elevation showing the brush and end of the water-conduetor.
Figure II is a side elevation with the side removed showing the ends ofthe brushes.
The nature of our invention consists in constructing an apparatus or machine by which leather may be rapidly and successfully washed after it has been subjected to the action of the tannin. It more particularly consistvs in providing two or more revolving brushes secured to shafts or cylinders in arectangular frame. The said brushes are made to revolve toward each other, and receive their motion from any of the Well-known powers. It further consists in so arranginga tank as to supply Water to the leather as it passes through between the brushes. Both sides ofthe leather are subjected to the action of the brushes at the same time, thus removinyin the most successful manner all the sediment remaining upon .the side of leather after it has'been removed from the vat. Thus by our invention a great amount of time and labor is saved, and the Work done in the most perfect manner. v
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
O 'is a frame, rectangular in form, and enclosed with boards or other suitable material, to which the shafts or cylinders P containing thc brushes E E are attached, and made to revolve toward each other, running in'suitable bearings secured in any convenient manner to the frame O. F F are band-wheels, to which the power may be applied to either, the said band-Wheels being rigidly secured to the shafts or cylinder I so that motion is communicated from one shaft or cylinder to the other by means of the cross-belt a, which passes around the band-wheels D D, or motion may also be communicated from one shaft to the other. by means of gear-wheels, in
which case the belt a may be dispensed with.k B B are water tanks, which are located at each end of the frame O, or at any other convenient point for the purpose of supplying Water to the leather While it is being subjected to the action of the brushes, a conductor or pipe leading from one tank to the other, so that both may be supplied with an equal quantity of water. I is a pump-log or tube, which is intended to raisethe Water to the tank, but is not fully shown, as it is no part oi' our invention. A is a dash-board, which extends above the top of the machine and back of the throat through which the leather passes to prevent the water from being spattered, and to guide the leather into the machine. It Will be observed that the frame H is made in two sections, one above the other, so that access may be had to the brushes by removing the upper section of the frame.
The operation consists simply in passing the leather after it has been taken from the vats into the machine, when it immediately comes in contact with the brushes upon both sides, and by the action of the brushes the leather is drawn through the machine. At the same time it receives an abundant supply of water from the tanks B B through the orifices, as seen in the drawing. It will be seen that as the brushes revolve toward each other at a. speed of about one hundred revolutions per minute, the leather receives the action of the brushes upon both sides at the same time, thus facilitating the process of removing the sediment in the most and complete perfect manner.
Having thus described our invention, what We claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Two or more revolving brushes, or their equivalents., for washing or'removing the sediment from leather for the purposes and substantially as herein described.
2. n combination with the brushes E E, the tanks B B, or equivalents, for the purposes and substantially as herein set forth.
