GRAIN-SCOURING MACHINE.
Application filed. November 1, 1912.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN R. MoA'rnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Itolla, in the county of Phelps and State of llflissouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grainscouring Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in grain cleaning devices and more particularly to a grain scouring machine and the primary object of the in vention is to provide a device of this character which is simple and durable in construction and one which will be most effective in operation.
Still another object of the invention resides in providing a scouring device which is formed in sections operating in reverse directions and a still further object resides in providing blades on one of the sections of the device which are provided with longitudinal abrading ribs on the faces thereof.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section through the device; and Fig. 2 is a transverse section therethrough as seen on line 22, Fig. 1.
In describing my invention, I shall refer to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which 41 indicates a main frame of a grain cleaning machine, to which my improved scouring device is particularly applicable and mounted on the upper portion of this frame is a hollow body or housing 42 in which are operatively arranged the conveyers 43. The one end of this housing or body communicates with a hopper (not shown) and the opposite end of the housing communicates with my improved scouring device.
The scouring device consists of a housing 44 of substantially cylindrical design, depending from the upper portion of the frame 41. Ihe bottom of this cylindrical housing 44 is provided with a central open- Specification of Letters Patent.

ing 44 and removably secured to the under face of the bottom to surround the opening, is a seat 44 Disposed through the opening 44', is a sleeve-like bearing 44 which is mounted on the aforesaid seat, with bearing balls arranged between the same and said seat. Secured to the upper portion of the bearing sleeve 44*, which projects into the lower portion of the cylindrical body 44, is the lower portion of a skeleton-like cylinder 44, the outer portions of which are spacedsomewhat from the wall of the housing 44. A sleeve-like bearing 44 is also carried on the upper central portion of this skeleton-like cylinder 44 and is rotatably mounted in an opening in the upper portion of the main frame 41. In view of the construction described, it will be seen that this cylinder or the like 44 is rotatably mounted in position within the cylinder 44 and rotatably mounted inthe sleeve-like bearings 44 and 44 to extend vertically through the cylindrical member 44, is a shaft 44 This shaft is provided with a plurality of radial blades or dasher arms 45, while the skeletonlike cylinder 44 is also provided with inwardly extending blades 46 which are arranged in staggered relation with respect to the blades 45. The blades 46 are provided on the upper and lower faces thereof with the steel or other metal ribs 47, which obviously strengthen said blades 46 and the blades 45 are twisted somewhat from their inner to their outer ends to give substantially an upward movement to the contents of the cylinder, when the device is in operation.
Formed on the upper sleeve-like bearing 44 is a bevel gear 48 and the shaft 44 which projects to a plane above the plane of the gear 48, is also provided with a bevel gear 49 which is arranged opposed to the gear 48. A horizontal shaft 50 is rotatably mounted on the upper portion of the frame 41 and is provided with a bevel gear 51 on the one end thereof, which meshes with the gears 48 and 49, so that when said shaft 50 is rotated, the gears 48 and 49 will be correspondingly rotated in opposite directions, thus causing the shaft 44 in the skeleton cylinder 44 and the parts carried thereby to be also rotated in opposite directions in the cylindrical housing 44. Also mounted for rotation on the main frame 1, is a main drive shaft which is disposed in a plane below the scouring cylinder 4A and connection between this shaft and the shaft is had by means of a belt 52 which is trained over pulleys 45 and 50, carried respectively o the ends of the shafts 45 and 50.
The wall of the cylindrical housing 4A is provided with an outlet 53, which leads to a brushing device 48, but aS the latter forms no part of this invention, further description of the same will be omitted. Also mounted on the shaft 45, is a fan 51 which is inclosed within a casing 50, the latter leading to the outlet 53 of the cylindrical housing 44:. Thus the grain which is discharged from the scouring device will be treated by air currents which are passed from the fan 51, through tubular portions of the casing 50.
In practice, the grain after being thoroughly soaked, so that the outer hulls thereof become loosened from-the inner berry or core of the same, is conveyed into the scouring cylinder 44. After the grain enters the last mentioned cylinder, the same will be thoroughly scoured by the blades 45 and 46 which are being disposed in opposite directions. After becoming thoroughly scoured, the grain will pass through the outlet 58, adjacent the bottom of the scouring device, to be further treated, as desired. It will be appreciated, however, that immediately upon the passing of the grain from the scouring cylinder, the same will be treated by air currents prior to its being treated by other means. A further treating of the grain is through a brushing mechanism but it will be understood that any desired grain treating device may be used as the next step in the treatment of the grain, such showing in the drawing being merely to disclose a complete grain cleaning device.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a simple, inexpensive and efiicient means for carrying out the objects of the invention and while I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described this invention, what I claim is A grain scouring device including a frame, a vertical cylinder mounted thereon at one end of the same, said cylinder having inlet and outlet ports at the upper and lower ends thereof, respectively, a rotatable shaft extending longitudinally through said cylinder, a second cylinder rotatably mounted within the first cylinder and rotatable on said shaft, radial blades carried on said shaft, additional blades carried on the outer walls of the second cylinder and projecting inwardly therefrom in alternating relation to the aforesaid blades to cooperate with the latter, the last mentioned blades on the second cylinder being provided with ribs on their upper and lower faces, and means to rotate said shaft and the second cylinder in opposite directions in the first named cylinder.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
