To all whom, t may concern:

Be it known that I, AsAHnL A. PORTER, a citizen of the United Sta'tes of America, residing at Jerico, in the county of Cedar and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrels; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.

My invention relates to novel and useful improvements in barrels; and it has for its object, primarily, the provision of a barrel that can be readily collapsed or folded when not desiredfor use, so that it can be conveniently carried from place to place or stored.

With these and other objects in view, which will become apparent in the course of the following description, all looking toward improving and simplifying devices of this character generally, my invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of simple parts, that will be hereinafter fully described, and the points of novelty will be particularly set forth in the appended claim.

I am enabled to accomplish the objects of myinvention by the simple means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a barrel embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical section; and Fig. 4. is a transverse view of the various parts constituting the top of the barrel, said parts being arranged in their proper relative positions.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a barrel formed with a plurality of staves arranged edge to edge, as is usual, a bottom section 2, and a top 3. The staves are recessed near their ends, as indicated by the numeral 4, which recesses when the barrel is in position for use form contiguous annular recesses for the reception of the members constituting the bottom and top of the barrel.

In carrying ont my invention I prov'ide each stave with a plurality of staples 5, the number employed, however, being three. Said staples are. provided near the ends of the staves and at or about the central portions thereof.

The numeral (3 designates wire bands which pass through the staples upon the staves and extend almost entirely around the barrel and have their ends connected to ears 7, formed upon metallic members 8,` said members being also bent toform laterally-extending ears 9, perforated for the reception of bolts 10, by which means the staves are held in proper relative position when the barrel is in position for use.

As clearly shown in the drawings, thcbottom of the barrel is formed of a single wooden disk adapted to extend in the annular recess formed in the staves approximate to the bottom of the barrel. As shown in Fig. Lt of the drawings, the top of the barrel is formed of four pieces, two side pieces 12 having their straight edges beveled, as indicated by the numeral 13, and provided with short laterally-extending metallic cleats 14 to prevent the central members of the top (which Idesignate in the drawings by the numerals 15 and 16) from falling into the barrel when it is attempted to remove them therefrom.

The numeral 17 indicates a wooden turnbutton adapted to be turned to extend across the members 15 and 16 at the point where said members abut. Forlocking t'heturn-but.- ton in position for securing the barrel closed I provide a metallic staple 18, under which the free end of the turn-button is locked.

In use when it is desired to open the barrel it will be seen that it is only necessary to push the turnbutton to one side, when the Ycentral members of the top can be readily removed, and when said parts are removed the side portions or members of the top can be readily taken from the annular recess and free access had to the contents of the barrel. When it is desired to collapse the barrel, the top is removed in the manner just described, the screws or bolts are removed, when the staves can be readily folded into a compact bundle after the bottom 2 has been removed, which is readily accomplished when the bolts are loosened.

It will be understood that the invention is susceptible to many minor changes and details involving mechanical skill which may be made within the scope of the invention without departing from the spirit thereof.

Having thus described my invention, what Iclairn as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A collapsible barrel,'comprising a plurality of staves having recesses in their end faces near their upper and lower ends, means for connecting the staves together, a bottom section secured in the lower recesses and a top section secured in the upper recesses, said top section eonsistin g of the side pieces 12 12 having curved outer edges and straight inner or adjacent edges which are beveled, the sections 15 16, the combined length of which corresponds to the greatest diameter of the barrel, the longitudinal edges of said sections being beveled to correspond wit-h the beveled inner edges of the sections 12 12, cleats 14 se- ASAHEL A.
