UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEIoE.
WILLIAM P. DE LANEY, JR., OF EAST PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
BARREL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known Ithat I, WILLIAM l?. DE LANEY, J r., a citizen of the` United States of America, residing at East Pittsburg, in the county ,of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to barrels, and the primary object of my invention is, to provide a collapsible or folding barrel that can be used for various kinds of merchandise.
My invention aims to provide a simple, durable and inexpensive barrel that can be collapsed or folded to occupy a comparatively small space. In this connection, my barrel is designed whereby it can be returned to the original owner, after carrying merchandise to a purchaser, and it is upon this return shipment that I reduce the expense, and space used by an ordinary barrel. To this end, I construct a barrel of a plurality of staves fiexibly connected together, whereby the staves or sides of the barrel can be collapsed. I also use sectional heads, which are adapted to fold between the staves of the barrel, and when the same in a set up or useful condition, these heads are adapted to firmly brace the staves and maintain the barrel in a cylindrical form.
The detail. construction entering into my invention will be presently described and then specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is an elevation of a barrel constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same, Fig. 3 is a plan of the barrel, Fig. t is a cross sectional view of the same, Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view of the barrel as collapsed or folded, and Fig. 6 is a sectional view of a portion of the barrel illustrating one Vof the heads thereof.
To put my invention into practice, I provide a plurality of staves 1, these staves be- 'ing flexibly connected together by bands of malleable metal 2. The staves are arranged to provide two semi-cylindrical parts hinged together, as at 3, whereby the barrel can be collapsed, that is, one part folded upon the other. The structure as thus formed is provided with folding heads for closing the ends of the barrel. These heads comprise sections t and 5 hinged together, as at 6a. The section 5 of each head is connected by a Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led February 7, 1908.
serial No. 414,832.
strap hinge 6 to one of the staves 1 of the barrel, this strap hinge permitting of the head being countersunk in the end of the barrel. The section 4; of each head is provided with a ring 7, to afford ready means for manipulating the head sections, and section 4 is adapted to engage in a channelshaped bracket 8 fixed to one of the staves opposite the strap hinge 6 constituting a support for said section. It will thus be seen that/the heads can be easily placed in the ends of the barrel to maintain the staves 6 in a cylindrical form, these heads being foldedto lay against the staves, when said staves are in a collapsed position.
To maintain the heads of the barrels in position, when the barrels are filled with merchandise, I use locking bars 9, these bars being connected to the ends of astave by link hinges 10, permitting of the hinged ends of said bars engaging in recesses 11 provided therefor in the stave to which said bar is hinged. The opposite ends of the bars are provided with hinged members 12 having eye bolts 13, these bolts extending through the ends of the stave opposite the stave to which said bars are hinged. The eye bolts 13 are adapted to extend through metallic plates 14 provided therefor, and to lock said eye bolts in the stave and the plates 14, I can use hooks 15 or padlocks (not shown).
The locking bars 9 are adapted to prevent the heads from being forced outwardly when the barrel is being used and prevents the contents of the barrel from being spilled, particularly when the bars are secured by padlocks, seals or similar fastening means.
It is apparent from the foregoing description that I have devised a barrel that will occupy a comparatively small space, when folded, as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, and will serve to fully protect merchandise, when in the set up position as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings.
My invention is susceptible to such changes in the size, proportion and minor details as are permissible by the appended claim.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is
A barrel comprising two substantially semi-cylindrical sections each formed from a plurality of staves flexibly connected t0- gether, hinges connecting said semi-cylindrical. sections, a bottom formed of two substantially semi-circular sections hingedly Patented Dec. 1, 1908.
connected together along their meeting edges and one of which sectione is hinged to one of the barrel sections, zi head 'formed of two substantially Semi-circular sections hingedly connected together along their meeting edges and one of which is hinged to one of the barrel sections7 a bracket carred'by the opposite barrel section to receive the free edge of the other head Section, and hinged locking hairs carried by the barrel section to 10 y secure the head and bottoni sections against i outward movement.
