Description

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY GONCERN:
Beit known that I, ROBERT I-I. GRIFFITH, of the city and county of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful improvements in the Mode of Detaching Boats instantly from both of the davits; and the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accom panying drawings, making apart of this specification, in which'- Figure 1 represents a boat let down, suspended from the davits, with the apparatus connecting with the tackle for instantly detnching the boat.
Figure 2 shows an enlarged view of a pulley-block in section, with the cani holding the jointed hodk in position to suspend the boat.
Figure 3 is a view of the'samc with the rock-shai`t handle and cam in position to release the hook, allowing 4it to tip over, detaching the boat.
The object of my invention is to release from .the hooks of the pulley-blocks both ends 0i' a boat when it is to be launched from the davits at the same instant, without any of the apparatus by which it is effected being attached to and remaining in the boat to take up room, or be an' obstruction in the way of taking in stores of water and provisions.
My invention consists in the combination of a. rock-shaft er connecting-rod, with cams and jointed hooks attached to the lower or movable pulley-blocks, so arranged that the hooks will both be held in the proper position to hold on to the boat when suspended to the davits, and by turning the rod the cams on each end will release the jointed hooks, so that they will detach themselves instantly from the rings in the ends of the boat. l That others may be enabled to make and use my invention, I will describe it more fully, referring to' the drawings, and to the letters marked thereon.
'Io the davits an, and the ordinary tackle b Z1, by which shipA boats are launched, I make the lower pulleyblocks c e, with the metal straps d d, of suitable width and length, in which is iitted a cani, e, and a hook, f, the hook being pivotcd to the lower ends of the strap d, so that it will turn upside down when released by turning the rod A, to which the cam c is I secured, so as to relieve it from the ring 7a in the end of boat. The
two pulley-blocks c c being constructed as above described and shown in figs. 1 and 2, are connected together by the rock-shaft or rod A, which is of such length as to bring the hooks ff in proper position to be both hitchedto the rings t z of the boat, the hooks ,ff being held by the cams e e turneddown againstthem, and secured by the handle B on the rod A, which is held between the pins iz' in the pu1leyblock c. When the boat D is freighted with persons the rod A serves as a hold to steady them in getting in, and trimming the boat as it is lowered, it being central, and so far above as not to be in the way of shipping barrels of water and provisions, which can be placed centrally in the boat, as there is none of the apparatus for lowering or detaching left in the boat after it has been released and is afloat. It has been practically demonstrated, and will readily 'be seen, that by my invention, as above described, a boat can be freighted and launched with much more certainty,
not half the liability to be capsized or swamped as when the liberating depends upon the action of more than one man.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The rock-shaft or rod A, on which thecams e e are secured, when connected with the two pulley-blocks c c, one at each end of the boat, in combination with the pivoted hoeksff, constructed vand operating substantially as and for the purposes herein sct forth.

ROBT. II. GRIFFITH.
