TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Be it known that I, GEORGE L. WITSIL, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Olothes-Wringers; and I dohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description `vof the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part ot' this specification, in which- Figurel is a perspective view.
Figure 2 is an end elevation; and
Figure 3 is a transverse vertical section.
' The same letters are employed in all the iigures in the indication of the same parts.
A and A are elastic-faced rollers, which I prefer making of India rubber. The lower roller A is stationary, and the upper roller A plays vertically so as to accommodateitselt` tothe clothes passed between the rollers.. B is the journal of the lower roller, which is turned by a winch, C. The journals of the upper adjustable roller A are supported in the slotted frame D, passing through bearings D 'and vertical slots in the side of the frame. The pin D2 projects from the top oi1` the bearing-blocks Dl through a guide in the top of the frame D, which is also'formed with guides on the inner face to retain the bearings, while permitting' their free "e1-tical play, as greater' or smaller articles are passed between the rollers. A spiral spring` E, surrounds the pin D2, bearing against the under side of the annular top ofthe frame and the upper face ofthe block Dl. This spring maintains the equality of the pressure ou all articles subjected to the action of the wringer. This arrangement of bearings and springs is duplicated on the two journals. -An arn'r, D, on each side, extends from the bottom of the frame Dv. A curved bar-ID3 connects the extremities of' the twd'urms D. The lower roller has itsrbearings in the side frames F. These frames are constructed with lugs F, to which the arms D3 ot' the adjustable frame D are pivoted, so as to'permit an oscillatory motion to that'frame. The arms F2 ot' the frames F support the l curved bar IY". These bars Dl and F form jaws to clamp the outside and inside of the upper edge of the washtub to which the wringer is attached. The thicker the article subjected to the action ot' the wringer may be, and the greater the strain upon the winch, the tighter will the jaws be compressed upon the sides of the tub. The lower roller is turned by the-'direct action oi` the winclnO attached to its journal B. The upper roller is .turned in the opposite direction by a spur-wheel, G, onthe shaft. B, driving a pinion, G, on the shaft of the upper roller outside o' the slotted frame D. As the upper roller .is to work at variable distances from the lower one, it is necessary-to provide some means of retainingr the spur and pinion in gear. l This is effected as follows: The pinion is not fastfncd to the shaft directly, but a piece in the form of a Greek cross is fixed upon the shaft ot' the upper roller. The centro of the pinion has a slot in the saine forni, but with'the arms of the cross made a little wider and enough longer to equal the plu-y vertically of the upper roller. This pinion thus constructed is then attached by setting it upon the cross H, and a washer, I, outside of the pinion, is rigidly attached to the shaft to hold in place the pinion. As the spur-whcelG is turned, the teeth thereon will continue to engage those of the pinion, notwithstanding the variations in the space between the rollers, as the slotted pinion will fall by its own gravity, and, sliding-on the arms ot the cross-formed hub, maintain the cogs in gear.
What I claim us my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the roller A, spur-wheel G and frame F, including the jaws FE F, and the roller A', adjustable pinion G and frame D, including the jaws D" D', said parts being respectivcl)v constructed, and the whole arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The arrangement ot' the rollers at A and A when both are actuated positively, frames D and F, including the jaws Fl Fx and D:s D', block D, stems D2, and spiral springs E, substantially as ,set forth.
3. In combination with the rollers A and A, the spur-wheel Gand slotted pinion G', cross-piece II, rigidly attached to the shaft of the upper roller and washer I, substantially us und for the purpose set forth.
