IMPEovED MAGHINE'POE CUTTING SHEET 0E EAR METAL.v
dlgs Srthxrle rrfemt it in time Enters atmt :mt uniting parini its smut.
Be it known that I, TIMOTHY F. TAFT, ofv Shrewsbury, in the county pf Worccster, end Commonwealth ofV Mnssachusetts, have invented a. certain new and useful Improvement in Machines for Cutting Sheet and Bar Metal, and known asfLocleShears', and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description of the samefrefcrence being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in whichl Figure 1 represents perspective View of a. pair of loclshec1s with my improvement applied thereto.
Figure 2' represents a front view of the same; and Figures 3, 4, 5, end 6 represent diierent views of the projections J J, which are 'cast upon the main part .or frame A. of the mochine'.
Toenable others skilled-in the zirt to which roy-invention belongs to mirko and use the same, will proceed to describe it more in detail.
The nature of my invention lconsists in the use, in combination with a.connecting bolt, of two arms .I J", cast upon the main p iece'or frame A. A, one ou the part called the upper jaw, end one'on 'the part called the l lower jaw, (see figs. 1 and 2,) for the purpose of giving greater strength when 'cutting bar metol- Lock-shears seldom if ever break when cutting sheet metal, but most always when cutting bar metal.v I have proved by experiment that a pair of shears-will sustain one-third more pressure by being tied through the u'r'ms J J by means of`b'olU`K than without' such an`"'arrangemeut. Boiler-makers, blacksmithsend Aothersthct have occasion' to use, shears, are muchf better sutis'ed withthe lock-shears with the above improvement than'when made without it. s
In the drawings, the part marked A Aisthe main piece or frame of the machine, end combines or embraces the upper as well its thelowerjaw. The dotted. lines O O indicate the point of union between the jews. One side of the upright port of thepiece A is cored or recessed out to receive the Aeccentric D upon the main shaft 'C' and Pitman E and. slide F, as fully indicated in dotted lines, g. 1; the pitmen E being slipped upon thev eccentric, and also connected to slide F by a pin, P. The arts above described are protected from dirt and retained in proper position by a. face-pinto, B, which is fastened to the side. 'of the part A. by bolts H. G ris the lower or stationary blade, which is attached to the Alower-jaw by bolts; und G is the upper or sliding blade, which is attached by bolts H to the slide F. The blades G G are sc erranged that the 'face of the .Y
upper blade G always works close to the stationary blade G. The lever-shank M isjfastened 'to the main shaft C`so as to work upon tl1e-back Side of' the framenA. Lever Nis inserted in the shanlg M, and is'use'd to operate tho shears with when hand-poweris employed. Thearms d" J'eretied or connected by bolt'K, the bolt being1 passed through holes in the ermsnend then n ut L screwedon to tighten up the bolt, as fully indicated in the drawings. i.
The operation is ns follows: The end of the sheet of metal to be cut is passed betweenv the cutters or blades Gr (iQ-and the pieceor strip which is being. cut olif is bont down slightly by the operation, and slides freely under the angle formed by the bottom of the ripper jaw, indica-ted by the lower dotted line O, while the strip yor sheet/.of metal held in the'hnnd, and from which the strip or piece is being out, slides freely over the upper'surface of the lower jew, indicated by the Aupper dotted line 0, which is ou aline with the top of the stationary blade or .cutter Gg, so that strips of :my desired width and length can be cut, one part passing back o fvthelock, while the other part passes in front of the` lockY Having described my improvement in lock-shears, what I claim as new, and of my invention, and'desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The applicition to the lock-shears" above described of two arms, J J, witlrbolt Kaud nutv L, oi: their* equivalents, substantiaily as described. i i TIMOTHY F. TAFT. [a 5.3. Witnesses:
