PRuNlNc IMPLENHENT.I
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 347,552,
dated August 17, 1886.
Application filed June 28,1886. serial No. .som-26. (N maei.)
T0 all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, ROBERT BARTLY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ennis, in the county ofEllis and State ofTeXas, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Pruning Implements; and Ido hereby declare that the followinglis a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use 'the same, reference being had to lthe accompanying drawings, which form a part o'f this specication, and in which Figure l is a side 'view of my improved pruning-instrument, and Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspending parts in both figures.
My inventionhas relation to that class of pruningimplementsin which a concave chiseledge is formed in the upper end of the blade and one concave jaw of a pair of pruningshears is formed at the lower end of theV blade, while a saw is attached to one side ol' the blade and a pivoted jaw is attachedto the lower end, operating together with the lower concave edge, and it contemplates certain im provements upon the pruning implementfor whichLetters Patent No. 146,744 wer'egranted to me'on the 27th day of January, 1874; andv it consists, to that end, in the improved construction and combination of parts of such an implement, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter` A indicates the blade, the upper end of which is provided with the concave and the lower end of which is formed with a tang, C, which tits in the upper end of a pole or handle, D. llhe lower end of the blade is formed with a concave cutting-edge, E, at the side of the tang, which edge forms the rigid jaw of a pair of pruningshears. The movable jaw F of this pair of shears is pivoted at its inner -end upon a bolt or pin, G, passing into the blade at the inner. end of the concave edge in the blade, and thiseoncave movable jaw is provided with a handle, H, projecting from the middle of the convex rear edge of the chisel-edge B,
\ upon the handle or lower end to a lever, J, having its' fulcrum pole of 'the implement. The saw-blade K is secured at its upper end to an arm, L, projecting ofa bar or plate, M, secured to the side ofthe blade near the rear edge, and the lower end, N, of this plate is widened and formed into a guard, O,which projects yover the inner pivoted end of the movable jaw, and into which the pivotalv bolt of the' jaw passes. The lower end of the blade is secured to an arm, P, pro- ]'ecting from the tang, and this e d of the saw is provided witlisuitable means, ,for regulating the tension of the blade. handle or arm of the pivoted jaw projecting from the middle of the rear convex edge of the jaw'the handle and the operating-lever will jaw, the said handle having a rod, I, pivoted .to its outer end, which rod is pivoted at the from the upper endv By having the not haveto bemoved in as large an arc as when t the handleprojects from the outer end of the jaw, as inthe former implement described in the hcreinbefore-referredto patent, and the inner end of the j aw will be protected from injury as well as from being clogged up by dirt or pieces of bark by the guard formed bythe lower portion of the bar secured to the blade and forming a portion of the saw-frame.
It is desirable to have the saw-frame detachable, as itis liable to be injured on account of its projectingout'to the side, and by having it constructed and secured in the hereinbefore-described manner the frame may be removed and repaired when injuredor a new frame may be attached to the blade in its place without ai'ecting the usefulness of the remaining portionsof the implement.
Y Having thus described my invention,I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- In a pruning implement, the combination of a blade having a concave chisel-edge at its upper end and a tang and a rigid cutting-jaw at its lower end, a bar secured to the side of the blade near the rear edge and having an arrn projecting. at its upper end and a guard at its lower end, a saw secured between the arm of the bar and an arm from the tang, and a movable cu tter-J- aw having a concave edge and pivetz-ed at its inner endL between the blade and Tn testimony that I claim the foregoing as the guard. at the inner end of the rigid eutmy own I have hereunto affixed my signature tingedge, and having an arm projecting from l in presence of two Witnesses. the middle of the eonvex rear edge having a ROBERT BAR' LY.
