Letters Patent No. 91,121, dated June 8,1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAWINGMACHINES.
The Schecule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known thatI, E.'R. HALL, of' Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Wood- Sawing Machines and Ohurn Combined; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had'to the annexed drawings,
making a part of this specification, and to the letters and ligures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l, of the drawings, is a top plan view of my device.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Figure 3 are details. My invention relates to wood-sawing machines; and
It consists, mainly, in the construction and novel combination of devices, by which the wood is raised to the saw automatically by the same motive-power that mores the saws.
It also consists in combining with the sawing-apparatus novel devices by which a churn-dasher may be operated vertically.
The letter A of the drawings represents the sides of my frame, united by suitable cross-beams.
'Ihe letter B represents the saw-horse, arranged between the posts a, and resting upon the chains c, as shown.
The letter d represents the saws arranged in the gate c, which is arranged to move horizontally .by means of cranks and grooves, as is usual with this class of woodsaws. .l
The letter f is a bar, arranged as shown, to which the rear ends of the chains c are attached, and
The letter g is a roller, over which said chains are passed on the opposite side of the saw-:buck from the bar f.
The letter it is a ratchet-bar, attached to the rear side of the saw-buck, and
Letter t is a pawl-lever working thereon.
This lever t' is pivoted to the lower side ofthe rear part of the sawbuck, and
Letter l is a chain, attached to said' lever. Said chain is fastened, at-its opposite end, to the front side of the saw-buck.
The function of lthis chain, ratchet, and pawl-lever is to hold the log securely upon said saw-buck. The chain is passed over the log, and the lever is pressed down until the chain is suiiiciently tightened, when it is made secure by placing the lever under one oi' the teeth of the ratchet.

The method I have adopted for actuating this shaft n is by attaching a pinion to one end thereof, which meshes with a pinion on the working-shaft of the machine, and adjusting its front bearing in the side of a movable lever, in such manner that the pinions of the shaft may be thrown in or out of gear at will.
'lhe working shaft above referred to is represented by the letter o, and the movable lever is shown by the letter p on the drawings.
When the pinions are in gear, I insert a wedge in the slot of the frame, through which the lever p is passed, on the rear side of said level', and thus keep the pinions in gear as long as is desirable.
'.Io throw the pinions out of gear, I remove the wedge, when they immediately separate.
The letter D is a large cogged wheel, attached to the end of the working-shaft, and
Letters E and F are pinions working therewith, as shown.
I usually apply the power to a drum, attached to l pinion E in the ordinary manner.
The shaft to which the pinion F is attached is marked G 'on the drawings. It has cranks of the usual form inside the frame, to which the pitmen of the saw-frame are attached, and worked in the usual way. These pitmen are marked r on the. drawings.
My device for actuating a churn-dasher is as follows:
I pivot two arms, marked s, to the pit'men, and unite their tops, by hinges or pivots, to horizontal arms, marked t.
The arms t are attached to a shaft, u, which rests and works in hearings formed in the top of the upright standards v, which standards arc aftixed to the frame in the manner shown.
Another arm, marked w, extends forward from the shaft yu, to the end of which I pivot a rod, y.
The letter a is a spirally-grooved rod, united by a swivel-head with the rod y, and adapted for union with a churn-dasher by slot and pin.
This rod a operates in a suitable opening in the guide b', which is arranged inside, and extends to the front of the standards t', as shown.
In the openings formed in said guide, I arrange suitable pins, that work in the groove of" the rod a', and secure for it a rotary movement.
The letter H represents a churn, in which the dasher operates.
` rlhe device shown on-the left-hand figure of iig. 3 is intended for use in removing the rear end of the sawfranie from its grooves in the frame of the machine. It consists of two sliding arms, separated by a spiral spring, the ends of which arms pass into the grooves of the frame. These bars work in grooves in the headblock of the same, and the object I accomplish is to draw these arms from their grooves inward at will, and thereby release the saw-frame from the frame of the machine. Those arms are marked c', aud the spring is marked d'.
The letters e' are removable arms, aiiixed to the sides of an upright block, extending upward from the headblock of the saw-frame, and are arranged to move up and down on the sides thereof' at will.
They are pivoted to the sides ofthe block j', which in turn is pivoted to the top of' the horizontal har of the frame, iu the manner represented in tig. 2.
By pressing downward upon the block j', the arms e are forced against the bevelled tlauches of the arms c', thereby pressing said arms inward, and releasing their outer ends from their respective grooves.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The chains c, rollers g and m, shaft n, lever p, and pnions on the working-shaft, and shaft u., as described, when constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose specilied.
2. The arms s, t, and w, shaft u, rods y and a', and guide b, when all the parts are constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as and for the purposes speciiied.
3. The arms c' and e, spring d', and hinged block f, when constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as and for the purposes herein specified.
