PLAC KET- oLosuRE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters; Patent No. 650,865, dated June 5, 1900. Application filed September 1, 1899. Serial No. 729,266. (No model.)
To atZZ whom/it rnwy concern:
Be it known that I, MARIE L. PERROTTET, a citizen of the United States, residingin New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices for Tearing-Apparel, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fasteningdevices for wearing-apparel, and more particularly to placket-closers for closing the placket-openings in dresses, skirts, and similar.v articles, the object of the invention being to provide an improved placket-closer simple in construction, durable in use, and efiective for the purpose for which it is designed, and which can be readily placed in position and when in position will not be noticeable.
In thedrawings accompanying and forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is an edge View of this improved placket-closer. Fig. 2 is a front view thereof, partly open, the members being uncovered. Fig. 3 is a view of the completed device with the adjustable members covered. Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing the members adjusted into a different position from that shown in Fig, 2; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view similar to Fig. 4, showing the fastener provided with a fastening device.
Similar characters of reference designate like parts in, all the figures of the drawings.
It is well known that until the present fashion of wearing loops or cords across the placketopenings of Womens skirts such plackets frequently became parted, owing to the fact that the hooks and eyes which are usually used'as a fastening means are either ineffective or are not properly connected. Moreover, it is desirable, in connection with the loops or cords above referred to, to have a means which will automatically and positively maintain the placket-opening closed, since such cords are usually disposed some distance apart. I am aware that various devices have been furnished for this purpose, but to the best of my knowledge no practical and effective means has yet been provided, since those devices heretofore patented which have edgewise adjustment only lack practicability,
while that patented device which has a universal joint is likewiseimpracticable, since a joint having universal movement or a movement edgewise, flatwise, and vertically is necessarily an elaborate and bulkyjstructure, which, moreover, is expensive to manufacture. It has been found by actual experiment that when that placket fastener of which I am aware, having its universal joint, was placed in position a bulky and unsightly appearance was presented. The provision of this universal joint was deemed necessary to permit a Vertical movement of the strips to prevent the puckering of the fabric at the point where the lower end of the device is attached, which puckering, however, in a properly-constructed device will not be present, so that a vertical movement of one strip relatively to another is not deemed necessary.
My present improvement comprises a pair of strips or members 2 and 3, formed of any suitable material, usually of resilient material. These stripsvare preferably of the same length, havingrounded ends and pivotally connected by a pivot 4 at their lower ends. One of these strips, as 2, is shown as an integral structure, while the other strip, as 3, has within the same, intermediate its ends, a joint 5,whereby said strip comprises a pair of members 3 and 3, one member, as 3, being shiftable flatwise relatively to its companion member 3",and the strip 2 and both of said members 3' and 3" being shiftable as a Whole edgewise relatively to said strips. The joint 5 may be formed in any desired manner. In the present instance, however, each member 3 and 3 has its end bent upon itself to form pintle-receiving knuckles, the pivot 4 in the form shown eX- tending through two thicknesses of the member 3". By this construction it will be seen that the two strips are connected together for edgewise or sidewise movement relatively to each other, while the flatwise movement of the same relatively to each other is obtained by forming one of said members with a hinge or joint intermediate its ends, whereby the provision of a single connection adaptedto permit sidewise and flatwise movement, which must necessarily be a bulky joint, is avoided. The upper ends of these strips 2 and 3 may be connected in any suitable manner-as, for
instance, by means of an ordinary glove-fastening 6, if desired. (See Fig. 5.) In practice, however, the device is entirely covered with some suitable fabric 7, each member bea ing separately covered, parts of the covering extending beyond the ends of said members and forming extensions 8, whereby a means is provided for sewing the same to each end of the skirt-belt and for sewing the same at i the junction of the placket-opening, and as the belt is providedwith means for attaching the ends together no'additional means is necessary for securing the strips together. In use it will be seen that the strip may be I opened in either one of two directionsthat f is, edgewise or flatwise-'so that when the up- E per ends of the strips or the belt'ends are con- 5 nec'ted the opening of the placket is prcve'n'ted, while the wearer can bend or recline withi outthe breakage of the device, owing to its i resilient nature, 7 Having described my invention, I claim-- 1. A placket-fastener comprising a pair of strips pivoted at the ends thereof to permit edgewise movement of said strips relatively to each other, and one of said strips comprising a two-part member jointed within the, ends thereof to permit movement of one of said parts relatively to and independently of movement of the other strip and in a direc- 3 tion transversely to its edgewise movement, 5 2. A placket-fastener comprising a pair of resilient, flat, independently-formed strips of the same length pivotally connected adjacent to their ends, so that one strip will normally and freely lie fiatwise against the other strip from end to end of said strips, and one of said strips comprising a pair of hinged members to permit flatwise movement of one strip relatively to the other strip, the construction being such that the pivoted part of said jointed strip remains in permanent contact with its companion strip during the flatwise movement of the other part of said jointed strip independently of said companion strip, and a covering for each of 'said strips.
3. A placket-fastener comprising a pair of resilient, flat, independently-formed strips of the same length, one of said strips comprising an integral structure and the other comprising a two-part "member, one part shorter than the other; a pivot connection between the shorter part of said two-part strip and said integral strip, so that one strip will normally and freely lie flatwise against the other strip froin'end to en'dof said strips and permit edge- 3 wise movement of the whole of each strip relativelyt'o its companion strip; a flat leaf-hinge connection betweenthe two parts of said twopart strip to permit flatwise movement of the longer part'of said two-pa'rt striprelatively roar-id independently of the integral stri'pand the shorter part or said two-part strip.
4. The herein-described placket fastener 1 comprising 'a pair of resilient strips of the samelengthhavingapivotpjrojectingthrough the ends'of both of said strips, whereby they are pivotally secured directly to each other intermediate the ends thereof for ed'gewise movement, "oneof said strips comprising an integralsti'n'cture, and the otherof said strips having within the same intermediate its ends a flat leaf-hinge, thiereb forming a pair of members, each ieaf of s'ai hinge bein g formed by bending theend'of each strip member upon itself, and whereby a part'of said strip is'shiftable flatwise relatively to i'ts'compai'iion strip, while the wholeof said strip is shiftable edgewise relatively to said companion strip, and a covering for eaeh'of :s'aid strips and provided with extensions at 'ea'ch'end thereof to facilitate the attachment of the fastener in. position, substantially as described.
