Description
UNITED STATES ATENT mes.
MELLEN N. BRAY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE TUBULAR RIVET AND STUD COMPANY, OF MASSACHUSETTS.
SAMPLE AhilCLE;
srncrrrca'r'ron forming part of Letters Patent no. 650,705, dated m 29, who.
Application filed March 5, 1900. Serial No. 75389. on model.)
To (ZZZ whom it mirtg a e-m: I
Be it known that I, MELLEN N. BRAY, of Boston, county of Sufiolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Sample Articles, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
The present invention relates to a sample article and is shown as embodied in a sample rivet or stud, the object of the invention be in g to provide the article with means whereby it may be firmly secured to and combined with a card or mount, so that one or a group of I 5 such articles may be conveniently preserved for inspection and reference. For this purpose the article in accordance with the invention is provided with a fastening or attaching device formed by abnormally cutting or shaping a portion of the article itself without affecting the appearance of the article, as seen when it has been mounted, by attaching it to and combining it with the card or support.
It is to be understood that the term abnormally is intended to refer to the article as commonly used and not to the sample article, the abnormal condition of the one of course being thenormal condition of the 0 other.
The invention is especially applicable to a tubular rivet or stud in which the fastening device may be easily formed by cutting and bending a portion of the shank of the rivet 3 5 to form an attaching-tongue without changing the appearance of the rivet, as seen when mounted, it being obvious, however, that the invention might be applied to other articles having similar or corresponding component parts. In the case of the rivet or stud the flanged end contributes in holding the article in position on the mount, the said mount being notched or recessed to receive a portion of the flange of the rivet, so that the shank will lie fiatupon the face of the card or mount, while the fastening device, which has been formed by cutting and bending a portion of the said shank, may be engaged with the mount, so as to hold the stud'securely thereon.
In the caseof a card-mount the card is pr0- vided with a notch or slot to receive the flange of the rivet, andthe attaching-tongue of the shank is passed through the card and clenched onthe other side. 1
Figure 1 is a plan view of a mount shown as a card containing a series of sample rivets. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same on the line 00 of Fig. 1, a portion of the rivet being shown in elevation.
The sample article a, which is herein shown 60.
as a sample tubular rivet or stud, consists of the ordinary article, which hasbeen abnorf nially cut or shaped tofdrm a fastening de vice a adapted to serve as means for securing the article, when used as a sample, to a card or mount 1) in any suitable Way. As herein shown,- the mount 19 is a piece of card board adapted to contain a line of tubular rivets displayed thereon. The said rivets are arranged to lie fiat on the face of the card b,- which card is provided with openings or notches b to receive portions of the flanges a of the rivets, so that the shanks thereof will lie flat against the face of the card. The fastening device M, which is shown as formed 7 5 by cutting a tongue from the Wall of the shank, is bent away from the shank, passed through the card I), and clenched on the other side thereof, as best shown in Fig. 2. The sample articles are thus securely fastened to. the card by substantially-invisible fastening means, the appearance of each article for display purposes being unimpaired, although the articles have been rendered unfit for ordinary use.
While it may be stated that the invention has been successfully carried out with tubular rivets, it is not intended to limit the invention to these specific articles, since it is obvious that any article, a portion of which may be abnormally cut or shaped without injuring the appearance of the article for display purposes, may be so cut to obtain a sample which can be secured to a card or mount in accordance with the invention.
secured to a card or mount for purposes of dis- 10o play.
2. A sample tubular rivet or stud which consists of such a rivet or stud, the shank of to afiford a fastening projection, the said prowhich is abnormally formed to afford a fasjection extending through the said card and tening projection for the purpose of securing being clenched on the opposite surface theresaid rivet or stud to a card or mount. of, substantially as described. 1 5
5 3. The combination withacard or support In testimony whereof I have signed my provided with one or more notches or openname to this specification in the presence of ings; of one or more tubular rivets or studs two subscribing witnesses.
supported on said card, each with its shank MELLEN N. BRA'Y. parallel and adjacent to the surface thereof \Vitnesses: 10 and its flange or head projecting into the said IIENRY J. LIVERMORE,
opening the said shank being abnormally cut NANCY P. FORD.
