J. E. CHESLEY.
Patented Aug. 29,1871.
t e. k c a r B d e v 0 r p m \NSTNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
JAMES E. OHESLEY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO JEFFERSON J. GRAY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BRACKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,433, dated August 29, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs E. CrmsLEY, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Brackets, of which the following is a specification My invention relates to the combination of dovetailed grooves and tenons with a bracket, in such a manner that the shelf may be temporarily connected to the back piece and the support to the shelf in a very strong manner, or may be instantly removed, when desired, to pack the same in a small compass for removal or shipment.
Figure l is a vertical transverse section through the back, shelf, and support. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the shelf and support at a right angle to the view in Fig.1, at the point indicated by dotted lines a m.
A A represent the back piece having a dovetailed groove across its front side. B B represents the shelf, having upon its back edge a dovetail-tenon corresponding to the groove across the back piece. 0 is the support for the shelf. The shelf is provided with a dovetail-groove upon its under side, commencing at its rear edge and extending forward, terminating at about the point shown in Fig. l, at E. The upper end of the support 0 is provided with a dovetail-tenon corresponding with the groove in the shelf, but of less width than the length of the groove to which it is to be applied, the dovetail-tenon being cut away at the front of the support a sufficient distance to allow it to be slid forward into the groove in the shelf so as to admit the pin to pass in front of the back piece. When the shelf is slid to its place the support is slid back, and the. pin is pressed into the hole made in the back piece to receive it.
To disconnect the bracket, pullthe support G forward to disengage the pin, then draw the shelf B sidewise from the dovetail-groove in the back piece, then pull the support in a like manner from the shelf, and the three pieces may be laid flatwise upon each other so as to pack in a small compass, and may be carried without danger of breakage, and, whenever desired, may be readily and easily put together in a firm manner ready for use without nails or the aid of tools.
I claim as my invention--- As a new article of manufacture, a bracket with dovetailed grooves and tenons, combined with back piece A, shelf B, and support C, when con-.
