To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELI YVHITE, a resident of Sodus, in the county of IVayne and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hay-Racks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to couplings and devices comprising couplings suitable for connecting the arms and body of a hay-rack of' the general character set forth in patent issued to me January 30, 1894, and numbered 513,549, and suitable also for otherlike usesas, for example, for connecting drop-doors to dumping-carts.
It has for its object to increase the efficiency, convenience, and durability of such devices.
The invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and pointed out.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a broken elevation, a wagon-box side-board being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a plan of the device. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an elevation of one member of the coupling. Fig. 5 is a perspective of the coacting member of the coupling. Fig. 6 is a vertical section of a modified form of the coupling, one member only being shown. Fig. 7 shows the same member of the modification in dotted lines and its coacting memher in full lines, the members being disposed as in assembling or disassembling them.
Numeral 1 denotes a side post or stake of a wagon box or body, and 2 indicates a posthead adapted to be coupled with an arm-supporting device to be described. The posthead comprises in the present instance two parts 3, fastened at 4 to the post and further connected by lugs 5, engaged in a slot 6 in said post. This post-head .2 may be cast in one piece, though it is conveniently made in two pieces, as shown in the present instance. Said head 2 has pendent lugs 7, behind which is engaged a head 8 of a bent plate 9, which is secured to the post and to its head 2 by bolts 10, passing through them all, as shown. This plate-head 8 has ears 11, which engage the outer edges of the lugs 7 and also the webs 11 of the post-head sections 3.
p .11, 12, and13 denote webs to strengthen the upper end of the post-head. This head whether formed entire or in sections is secured to a post and then bolted to the plate 9 after the bent end or head of such plate is engaged with said holder, as set forth. The upper end of the post is thus inclosed by the metal parts and thoroughly defended against injury, and the several members are not only easily assemblechbut cooperate to hold each other in place on the post. In this connection it may be noted that the lugs 5 prevent the post-head from moving either eiidwise the post or inwardly thereon, and they thus cooperate With the bolts in holding the parts solidly together. V a I 14 denotes rims inclosing sockets on the proximate faces of the members 3 of the posthead. These sockets open toward each other, and each has its circular rim cut away, as shown at 16, to provide for suitably receiving and cooperating with a coupling member attached to a rack-arm holder 15.-
17 denotes guards or re'e'ntrant curved portions of the socket-rims 14, extending to near the center of the sockets, whereby are formed admission and escape ports for the lugs 18 of the cooperating coupling members.
19 denotes arm-holders, and 20' are arms bolted thereto at 21. In these arm-holders are formed sockets inclosed by circular rims 22, adapted to receive the rims 14 in manner to permit a rotary movement of said rims 22 and of the arm-holders and arms connected thereto. The web 23 constitutes a bottom' 14 of the post-head sockets. 1
To couple the parts the arm-holder is held as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. '7 and so that the lug 18 (or 18) can be entered between a guard 17 and the opposite end of a socket-rim 14. Said lugs are eccentrically situated in the sockets and have such length that when entered and the sockets engaged, as set forth, said lugs come to a bearing on the inner surface of the rims 14, said latter rims being embraced externally bythe rims 22. The lugs 18 have alength a little less than the diameter of the rims 14, upon which they have bearing in the direction of their longest dimension. This bearing is supple mented bythat of the rims 22 upon rims 14, (or 14,) so as to greatly strengthen the connection, and the cooperation of the elongated eceentrically-situated lugs and the coacting rims is deemed an important feature, the coupling being specially designed for structures, such as named, requiring considerable strength.
It may be noted that the parts cannot be easily and conveniently connected to the body by entering the coupling members of the armholders in a downward and outward direction, the manipulators standing on the body, and the parts can also be more conveniently disconnected, the body ail'ordin g the manipulators a standing place and also receiving the disengaged side rack.
In Fig. 7 is shown a modification adapted foruse when a supplemental or so-called top box is desired. The parts are so arranged that the arms 20 stand upright. In this form the lugs 18' bear upon the interior of rims 14, which latter fit the rims 22". An extension or elbow 24 of the arm-holder 19 bears against 1 the bent plate 9 and stops the arm 20 from turning out far beyond the perpendicular. The'sam'e advantages of superior strength are found in this modification as in the other and the same ease and convenience in assembling the parts, which matters are deemed especially important in structures requiring great strength and involving heavy weights.
Although the devices have been described and are primarily intended for use in connection with a wagon-body and rack, (or top box,) their use is not limited to such particular structure, but all constructions involving like conditions are contemplated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The combination of the post-head having' circular socket-rims, with the arm-holder having similar socket-rims embracing those first named, and lugs fixed to the common bottom of one pair of the sockets adapted to bear on the interior of the other rims.
2. The combination of the post-head hav ing circular socket-rims, with the arm-holder having similar socket-rims embracing those first named, and lugs fixed to the common bottom of one pair of the sockets adapted to bear on the interior of the other rims, said lugs being eccentric'ally situated in their respective sockets. 3. The combination of the post-head having circular rims inclosing sockets, said rims being mutilated and provided with reentrant guide portions, and the arm-holder having rims rotatably bearing on the head socketrims, and lugs seated in sockets formed by the arm-rims adapted to be entered through the head-rims alongside the guides.
4.. In a detachable coupling, two members having sockets formed by mutilated rims, the rims of one member rotatably bearin g on those of the other, and lugs seated in the sockets embraced by the outer rims and bearin g against the interior of the inner rims.
5. In a detachable coupling, two members having sockets formed by mutilated rims, the
rims of one member rotatably bearing on those of the other, and lugs seated in the sockets embraced by the outer rims and bearing against the interior of the inner rims, one of said members being rotatable about the otherfrom an operative position to a position on the opposite side of the vertical to permit removal.
6. In combination, the post, the post-head having lugs 7, the bent plate provided with a head engaging the lugs of the post-head, and bolts securing the parts together.
