FREDERICK H. BIRD, 0E CHICAGO, ILLrN oIs, AssIe1\ToR TO AMERICAN STEEL FOUNDRIES, OF NEW YoRK, 1v. Aconro ArIoN on NEW J ns Y..
COUPLI G-POCKET.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK H. BIRD,
a citizen of the United States, and resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and I useful Improvements in Coupling-Pockets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to railwaycars and has partlcular reference to anovel coupler pocket for use as an attaching means for car couplers to the end sills of locomotive tenders and similar cars. I
The invention is intended as an improvement on the patent to Dickerson No. 1,087,222, under which my .assignee is a licensee. 1
An object in the presentconstruction is to provide against-the possibility of the shelf, which is separable fromthe pocket member, becoming loose because of the difliculty in maintaining the fastening bolts in a tight condition.
A further object is to providemeans for upholding the shelf wherein the, holding bolt or pin is in shear instead of in tension.
A still further object is to provide a holding pin or bolt which shall be in double shear.
The invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein-- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a coupler.
pocket constructed in accordance with vmy invention, and 7 Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the draw ings, it will be seen that the pocket includes a vertical web 10, by means of which the 1 pocket is secured to an end sill or other portion of a car. Projecting from one side of the web is a pocket having laterally diverging. side walls 11 and parallel top and'bottom walls 12,13 respectively' At 'tl16 top and bottom of thepocket and secured to the upper and lower walls-12,13, are apertured ears or lugs 14, 15, a pair of such lugs being provided on both upper and lower.
walls, each one of the lugs constituting the pair being spaced apart and lying one on each side of the pivot pin-hole 16 through the pocket. Projecting outwardly from the web 10, oneachside of the pocket, are lugs made reversible.
Specification ofLetters Patent. Patented Apr, 24, 1917, Application filed June 28,1915." Serial No. 36,700.
17, 18, a pair of these lugs being disposed on each side of the pocket and both above and below the center line thereof, the lugs of a pair being spaced apart vertically to form an opening or jaw therebetween.
The parts heretofore described are all cast integral. The shelf, by means of which the coupler is supported in horizontal position, consists in a flat shelf portion 19 and a bifurcated opposite portion consisting in arms 20, the endsof which lie between the lugs 18, as shown in Fig. 1. Intermediate the arms and the shelf portion I provide bearings 21, spaced apart a distance slightly the bearings and the ears 15, the pin being held in place by a cotter 23. The upper and lower portions of the pocket member are duplicated in order that the pocket may be The shelf'portion may be strengthened by suitable longitudinal'ribs 24 and horizontal ribs 25. As shown, the load is carried by a large pin which is'in double shear, and there is no possibility of the parts becoming loose because of ineflicient holding capacity of nuts. Furthermore, the pin may be of relatively large size, and therefore the wear thereon will be reduced to a mlnimum.
I claim:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a pocket member having apertured lugs, stop lugs also secured to said'pocket member, a shelf having a flat bearing portion, an arm engaging said stop lugs, and a pin passing horizontally through said apertured lugs and through said shelf member intermediate its ends, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of acoupler pocket, having a? rear wall and a floor, an apertured lug projecting downwardly from said floor, a shelf horizontally pivoted to said apertured lug, and a pair of lugs projecting forwardly from said rear wall and providing a space therebetween within which space the rear end of said'shelf is adapted to be accommodated,
substantially as described.
3. In a coupler pocket the combination of a pocket member including a rear Wall and tween the lugs projecting from said rear a floor, an apertured lug projecting from Wall, substantially as described. 10 said floor, a pair of apertured lugs project- Signed at Chicago, Illinois, this 23 day ing from said rear wall, a shelf having of June, 1915.
apertures intermediate its ends and a ho'ri- FREDERICK BIRD. zontal pin passing through the apertures in Witnesses:

shelf being accommodated in the space be- CHAS. R. Ron.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of I'atents, Washington, D. G.
