SIDE-BOARD ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 644,655, dated March 6, 1900.

Be it known that we, ARTHUR M. WISWELL, residing at Lincoln,in the countyof Lancaster, and FREDERICKD. KEES, residing at Beatrice, in the county of Gage, and State of Nebraska, have invented certain useful Improvements in Side-Board Attachments; and We do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved sideboard attachment for wagons.
The object of our invention is more particularly to provide a side-board adapted to be instantly attached to any ordinary Wagon which is to be Yused in hauling loads of light bulky material, so that the capacity of the wagon may be increased. Our invention embodies certain other advantages which will be set forth hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings we have shown, in Figure 1, a side View of a wagon provided with one of our side-board attachments. Fig. 2 shows a wagon provided with one of our side -boards, having the same thrown down against the structure to form a shoveling-board, so that the material can be thrown from the wagon into a building or structure without losing any material. Fig. 3 shows a central sectional view of our sideboard, showing the method of lookin g the side-board, while Figs. 4, 5, and 6 show, respectively, enlarged detached details of the locking mechanism used in connection with our side-board.
The aim of our invention is more particularly to provide an attachment more especially adapted for farm-wagons, which may be used for two purposes-first, in increasing the capacity of the wagon, and, secondly, in that the side-board may be used as a shoveling-board extending the full side of the wagon.
Our invention embodies, essentially, two sets of uprights or supports, aside-board, and a hinged locking mechanism by means of which said side-board may be locked to said supports or uprights, these supports, in connection with the locking mechanism, acting as double clamps, first in that they clamp themselves to the box or wagon-body at one end and to the side-board at the remaining end.
In the accompanying drawings, Fig. 2 represents a side-board of any suitable width and length, which at two points is provided with two openings, which openings are provided with a bushing or bearing formed by the section embodying the bearing-plate 9 and the upper half-bearing 25 and the plate 10 and the lower half-bearing 12, as is shown more particularly in Fig. 4. These two half- bearings 12 and 25 when united form a complete metal bearing, within which is held the shaft 24, provided with the cranks 6 6 and the two half- collars 14 and 1 5, as is shown more clearly in Figs. 5 and 6. In Fig. 6 an end view of this shaft 24 is shown, disclosing the arrangement of the two sectional collars 14 and 15. One of the bearings, preferably the one eX- tending downward, is provided with a removed portion 13, as is shown in Fig. 4, while the upper bearing 25 is not extended out to this bearing, as will be understood in referring to Fig. 3, where it will be noticed that the upper half-bearing 25 ends just before the upper collar 15 is reached. Within this lower removed portion 13 is held the lowerhalf-collar 14. When this shaft 24 is in position, so that the lower half-collar 14 is within the bearing 13, the outer face of this lower collar 14 is covered by means of the spring-plate 11, (shown in Fig. 4,) which plate above is provided With two small projecting ears 17, and these ears 17 17 work within the opening between the two collars 14 and 15, so that these pins 17 act as a spring-latch in locking this shaft 24. The shaft 24 can only be revolved against the tension of the spring-plate 11, which normally forces its pins 17 under spring tension either against these collars 14 and 15 or into the space between these two collars. These plates 10 and 9 are each provided with the flanges 10' 10', as is shown in Fig. 4. These flanges 10' 10 are each provided with an opening 20, while the upright 5 is provided with an opening 18 and the upright 5' with an opening 19, and through these openings 18 2O 20 and 19 2O 20 pass suitable bolts, so that these holders may each be pivotally secured to its upright, the upright 5, it will be noticed, being secured to the holder at its upper end, while the upright 5 is secured to its holder near the middle, as is shown in Fig. 3. From this it will be seen that by means of the pivoted connection these holders are secured to the side-board in the manner of a hinge. Each of these uprights 5 5 is provided with a face-plate S, having elongated openings therein passing through each upright, so that the cranks (i 6 of the shaft 24E would readily pass through these uprghts, so that the side-board 2 may be thrown outward. Referring to Fig. 2, the cranks 6 have been turned upward, as is shown in Fig. 3, when the side-board 2 may be thrown outward to form a shoveling-board.
The standard or holder or supporting-bar 5 is held in position by the load, which rests against the bottom, and in actual practice it is not found necessary to secure these standards to the wagon-box while unloading the same, though it is of course understood that the inner standards or supports 5' can be secured to the wagon-box direct by means of a suitable bolt.
To still further increase the capacity of the wagon, the side-board 2 in Figs. l and 2 has been shown as provided with an ordinary extension 7 The side-board 2 is preferably made a little less in thickness than the wagonbox 3 to which it is to be attached, so that when these two standards or supports 5 5 are pinched together by means of the crank-shaft 2i they tightly clasp themselves upon this side-board. From this it will be seen that our invention embodies, essentially, two sideboards, each of which is provided with suitable su pporting-bars, which bars are pivotally united to said side-boards, and which supporting-bars are detachably connected to an ordinary wagon-box.
Having thus described our said invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination with a side-board, of two supporting-bars one pivotally secured to the upper edge of the side-board and the other being pivotally secured to the lower edge of said side-board, and a latch to lock said pivotally-securcd supporting-bars to said side-board.
2. The combination with a side-board, of two supporting-bars, one of said supportingbars being pivotally secured to the upperv edge of said side-board, the remaining supporting-bar being pivotally secured to the lower edge of said side-board and a springlatch to detachably secure said supportingbars to said side-board.
The combination with a side-board, of a supporting-bar pivotally secured to the upper edge of said side-board, a second supporting bar pivotally secured to the lower edge of said side-board, said side-board and supportingbars being provided with registering openings, and a shaft provided with a crank at each end revolubly working within said sideboard, said cranks being adapted to work through the registering openings within said supporting-bars, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination with a side-board, of a supporting-bar hinged to the upper edge of said side-board, a second su pporting bar hinged approximately intermediate of its length to the lower edge of said side-board, a shaft provided with cranks at each end working within said side-board, said cranks working through said registering openings within said supporting-bars and a spring to latch said crank-shaft, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. The combination with a side-board provided with a suitable shaft-opening, of a plate having a half-bearing secured to one side of said side-board, said plate extending upwardly, said half-bearing entering said shaftopening, a second plate extending downwardly and having its half-bearing extending into said shaft-opening to form a complete journal with said first-mentioned half-bearing, a supporting-bar pivotally secured to said upwardly-extending plate, a second supporting-bar pivotally secured to said downwardly-extending plate, openings within said bars registering with said shaft-opening, a shaft provided with a crank at each end Within said journal-bearing and passing through said supporting-bars, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
